24.01.2022 MullumJoinery Wood & Metal at Woodfest 2018

22.01.2022 Furniture lovers, tree farmers, and master crasftpeople all came together at Federal today, to whittle away some misconceptions of the forestry industry. Woodfest celebrated everything about the sustainable timber industry even issuing attendees an important challenge.

22.01.2022 Sunday April 15, 2018 in Federal, NSW was a picture-perfect day. Blue skies, rolling hills, green and forested, it was the place that around 500 hundred people chose to gather in. The occasion was Woodfest, a celebration of native timbers that marked the creation of a new collective of farm foresters known as Quality Timber Traders (QTT). The main Northern Rivers species currently being harvested and which were displayed at Woodfest were silky oak (Cardwellia sublimis), silve...r quandong (Elaeocarpus grandis), Queensland maple (Flindersia brayleyana). Woodfest is all about celebrating sustainably grown native timber, said Kate Love, events manager for QTT. Its about bringing tree growers and woodworkers together so that we can create a local loop between seed to tree products and really showcase what we can do with our beautiful native timbers. The event was designed to showcase locally grown native timbers and their use through informative displays and a design competition. Panel discussions of makers, growers, architects, interior designers and timber technologists discussed various aspects of the project and took questions from an audience which packed out the chapel adjacent to Federal Hall. A BBQ lunch was hosted by the Bangalow Mens Shed, while local musician Luke Bennett serenaded the visitors who ate under shelter outside. At 2pm winners of the three categories of the Timber Design Competition were announced: Best Use of Sustainable Native Timber (using silver quandong, silky oak or Queensland maple) Art Studio Chair: Max den Exter Surfboard: Anthony Star Most Innovative Mirror: Alby Johnston (Bayspoke Studio) Best Concept Collapsible Timber Basket: Nathan Walker Best in Showcase Sculptures: Grant Vaughan (Designs in Wood)

18.01.2022 At Woodfest yesterday Martin Novack supplied me with some silver quondong.. (eleocarpis grandis...hope the spelling is right..) branch lengths..one was 150mm in... diameter and was reasneably straight in the grain...some kids cross cut it to 850mm length..then with a wedge and back of my axe then a shinglers " Froe " & maul split it in half longitudinally. .a Swedish carving axe was then employed to level the sap tangent off and level...a draw knife and shaving horse was then used to get it pretty smooth and with my eye take any "wind" out of it..a rough copy with a pen off a template was the prelude for axing the shape on and also the thickness for headstock end. Drilled some holes..installed some metal nut and bridge peices..pickup..install the strings. .tune it up and then join Billy Millroy (playing his famous tea chest bass) on stage (beside us ) and play some songs.. All up it probably took half an hour... Im putting some really good strings on it tomorrow and when done will video it being played. Oh..it has insane sustain and sounds incredible ! Thankyou Martin Novak ! See more
