04.01.2022 QPC CLUBBERS... check your email, you have been sent the details! Over the weekend Zone 16 Executive were informed that several horses who attended the Zone 16 Jamboree have developed a respiratory illness. This is a good reminder to practice good health hygiene and monitor your horses at all times. Horse health & horse events... This year we have all learnt about health and hygiene through the Covid-19 pandemic. In the past week we have attended a horse that became unwell following an event. This horse had a runny nose, cough and decreased appetite with a normal body temperature and is recovering well without any specific treatment. Based on the presenting signs we suspect this horse has a mild cold type illness and there are many viruses which cause these signs in horses. There is no clinical evidence of Strangles (a bacterial infection) or equine influenza virus (eradicated from Australia following the 2007 outbreak) in this horse. As with people, where horses are attending events and spending time in close proximity to each other, this is an opportunity for illnesses such as these to spread. There is no specific advice or action that needs to be taken in this case, however it is a timely reminder for us to consider horse health and hygiene at events. We recommend the following: Monitor horse health Do not take sick horses to an event. Notify an event official if a horse is suspected of being sick. Isolate the sick horse/transport home if safe and seek veterinary advice if needed. Isolate any equipment that has been in contact with the sick horse. Practise good biosecurity Avoid horse-to-horse contact and other people touching your horse. Bring your own equipment. Do not share feed, water or buckets. Wash your hands between horses. Practise good hygiene and decontaminate equipment thoroughly. Avoid use of communal water troughs. If using communal hoses, avoid touching buckets when filling with water to avoid spreading disease from bucket to bucket. Ensure your horse is up to date with all vaccinations. If you have an unwell horse, please closely monitor them and if you have any concerns please seek veterinary attention, particularly if they develop an elevated body temperature (normal body temperature 37.3 38.2C) or stop eating. If veterinary attention is needed, your vet will assess whether any specific testing or treatment is needed.
