14.01.2022 Australian Manuka honey was declared out overnight by the United Kingdom Trade Mark Registry. Carol Bennett, who acts for the UK Trade Mark Registry, said in ...her decision I have concluded that the term 'mnuka' is a Mori word that is used to refer to the plant know by the botanical term Leptospermum scoparium. The plant is grown in New Zealand and has been known by the common name 'mnuka' for some time. "Although the plant Leptospermum scoparium is grown in areas outside of New Zealand including Australia , it is known by different 'common' names in those territories. Therefore, it is accepted that the term 'mnuka' would be seen as designating a specific plant variety grown in New Zealand." Australia medicinal honey industry has a challenge to market appropriately 83 varieties of Leptospermum plants in Australia which produce honey with superior readings than New Zealand’s #Manuka honey. Many New Zealand Apirast are celebrating the decision which will safeguard the New Zealand industry from cowboy operators and protect New Zealand's trade reputation. New Zealand does not accept honey imports. The ruling clearly confirms the term mnuka honey as a badge of origin from a single geographical source that being New Zealand . We have seen similar rulings in the wine industry where only wine from the Champagne region could be labelled Champagne. #savethebees

As we organise the shipping ourselves, there may be a slow down over the Christmas break while the University is closed. See more

04.01.2022 Slime out A sad day. This is what small hive beetles do to a hive...they leave a yeast which ferments the honey and the bees just can't cope. The small hive be...etle (Aethina tumida) is a beekeeping pest. The #SHB is believed to arrive in Australia on government army vehicles first being first identified at Richmond, NSW in 2002. Subsequently it has affected many areas of Queensland and New South Wales. Beekeepers moving their hives has caused the spread. Despite bees/beekeepers being responsible for feeding Australia our government was slow to respond to the outbreak and often neglect to support beekeepers. Unfortunately our government makes foolish rash decisions pandering to agrochemical companies and the monoculture pollination industry legalising toxic poisons like fipronil to be used in Beehives. Many commercial beekeepers are now using fipronil within beehives ( fipronil is not allowed near food in Europe). Food and insecticides should never be mixed. https://www.theguardian.com///jul/16/eu-fipronil-ban-bees Fortunately wise beekeepers are coming up with more natural solutions. Beetle Buster is one solution. Please don’t use poison in Beehives there are so many chemical free solutions. https://www.beetlebusterbeekeeping.com/ Clip @anitarayner
