25.01.2022 While the coronavirus pandemic has meant you arent seeing us as much in person, Council staff have started work behind the scenes on Councils Climate Emergency Response Plan. Right now, were getting ready to start the first step of the project: workshops where we can all decide what a response plan might look like for our community. While we wait for the all-clear from health experts about holding meetings (and put the finishing touches on the program), here are three things you can do to stay in touch with the project and make sure youre ready to go:

25.01.2022 We love helping each other in the Borough in fact, we’re known for it. At the latest census, 38% of locals aged 15 and older were actively engaged in some form of volunteer work, which was well above the 24% average for regional Victoria. Volunteering plays a central role in developing and maintaining a connected community, which, in turn, adds to our overall sense of wellbeing. The Borough boasts more than 60 community organisations from emergency services to sporting clubs, environmental groups to charitable fundraisers. Without volunteers, the Borough would be a very different place to live in and visit. If you’d like to volunteer, visit Council’s online community directory to find a place to start: bit.ly/BoQCommunity

25.01.2022 A couple of seagulls find the perfect vantage point at Shortlands Bluff, Queenscliff. Wheres your favourite spot in the Borough to watch the sunset?

25.01.2022 We've replanted 500 trees, shrubs and groundcovers in Bunny Woods to repair the damage that recently occurred in this area. This area has now been reopened to the public, but please be extra careful when walking, as the new plants are fragile. Make sure you stick to pathways and dismount bikes while you're passing through this area. You can help by keeping an eye on these new plants as they grow. If you notice any damage or something out of place in this area, please m...ake a report to Council at www.queenscliffe.vic.gov.au/report-an-issue. Thank you to the Bellarine Catchment Network for helping out with this important project.

24.01.2022 As the saying goes, were all in this together. And plenty of local businesses are doing it tough right now, with so much to plan and prepare each time they open their doors. Weve made it a little easier for shopkeepers by distributing these CovidSafe sticker packs to Borough businesses As always, for the latest COVID-19 updates, visit the DHHS website at dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus

20.01.2022 Walking your dog on a leash keeps them safe from fast-moving traffic, prevents damage to sensitive wildlife, and avoids unpleasant interactions with people and animals. It could also help you avoid a $165 fine. Dogs must be leashed at all times in the Borough, unless they're being exercised on Narrows Beach. With Council officers stepping up patrols, we're reminding residents to do the right thing and walk their dog on a leash.... For more information about owning a dog in the Borough, including dog-friendly areas to visit with your furry friend, visit Council's website.

20.01.2022 FORE! Golfing has always been a popular pastime in the Borough over the years. Can you identify the location (and perhaps even the hole) of this photograph, taken in the late 1940s? SLV Archives

20.01.2022 Great news for caravan and motorhome travellers! Were installing a FREE dump point in Hygeia Drive, Queenscliff, that will allow self-contained RVs to get rid of their waste in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. Our Mayor Cr Ross Ebbels says motorhome owners should put the Borough at the top of their travel lists as coronavirus restrictions ease and tourists are able to venture out of their homes once more. The dump point was funded in partnership with the Campervan & Motorhome Club of Australia, and its location will be advertised throughout their nation-wide network.

20.01.2022 Queenscliffe always was and always will be Wadawurrung Country. We recognise, respect and celebrate the proud Indigenous heritage of our twin towns, traditionally inhabited by the Bengalat Balug clan of the Wadawurrung tribe, a member of the Kulin nation. NAIDOC Week takes place from 8 November to 15 November 2020. This year, why not learn a little more about the rich history of Indigenous culture in our own backyard? The BoQ Education website, a joint project of the Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale Primary Schools, is a great starting point to read about "our people": bit.ly/3eFeiSv There's also a number of virtual events run by VIC NAIDOC that you can tune in to safely from home, including Pride Night this Thursday evening and a march on Friday morning: bit.ly/358SnQK

18.01.2022 With new restrictions in force for metropolitan Melbourne, its important to remember that coronavirus remains a serious risk for every Victorian. Health restrictions still apply in the Borough, including: maintaining a distance of at least 1.5m from other people, including friends and family not having more than five visitors to your home at any time... avoiding crowds and large public gatherings getting tested if you have any coronavirus symptoms, however mild. If your primary residence is in Melbourne, you cannot travel to the Borough for a holiday or visit even if you own a holiday home. Were looking forward to welcoming you back in the future, but for now, please keep our community safe and avoid a fine by staying at home. Avoiding heavier restrictions in the Borough requires all of us to be alert and follow these health directives. With your help, we can keep our community safe from coronavirus. Contact the Department of Health and Human Services for more information. Breaches can be reported to Victoria Police on 131 444.

This week, our Mayor Cr Ross Ebbels was given a Zoom call by Australias Governor-General, His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), alongside his wife, Her Excellency Mrs Linda Hurley. 10.01.2022 If you havent heard, playgrounds in the Borough are reopening next week great news for kids whove already climbed over and under every inch of their backyard during lockdown! 10.01.2022 Were closing the Bunny Woods area of the Point Lonsdale Foreshore to undertake revegetation works. Our foreshore areas protect our roads, parks and community from erosion and storms. We need to repair some of the damage that has recently occurred to vegetation and the ground in this area to make sure it doesnt have long-term impacts for our community. If youre looking for a place to ride your bike, youre welcome to use the track opposite Point Lonsdale Primary Scho...ol. Weve also written to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning about keeping the Humps and Bumps track in Point Lonsdale open to riders, but you can continue riding there for now while we seek further clarification. Wherever you ride, please respect coastal vegetation by keeping to established tracks. We also know that some of our local riders are looking for something more challenging, so Council is looking into options for a more substantial bike track in the Borough. Weve written to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning asking for their support for this project, and were looking forward to involving riders in designing this track. We appreciate everyones help protecting our coastal vegetation while we get started on this project. The less time our engineers spend fixing damaged vegetation, the more time they can spend creating an even better bike track.

07.01.2022 Council staff and emergency services have restricted access to an area near the intersection of Hesse and King Streets in Queenscliff due to a gas leak. Workers are already on site to fix the situation, but please avoid the area and follow directions from emergency services until the situation is remedied.

07.01.2022 Were paving the way! Council is continuing its budget building blitz with another brand new footpath in a busy thoroughfare in Point Lonsdale. School students and local residents alike will benefit from the new wide footpath that links Lawrence Road with Bowen Road, providing safe access to both Point Lonsdale Primary School and the Springs Beach car park. Point Lonsdale Primary School student Tessa joined Queenscliffe Mayor Cr Ross Ebbels and the construction team to put the finishing touches on the path yesterday.

07.01.2022 This years Council elections are fast approaching, with all elections to be conducted via post this October. 06.01.2022 As COVID-19 restrictions begin to ease further across the state, its important our community is still kept safe. While that includes maintaining 1.5m physical distancing and other health precautions that youve been great at implementing so far, it also includes continuous testing, so that our health experts know where the virus is impacting. The Victorian Department of Health & Human Services is asking all Victorians with any symptoms of COVID-19, no matter how mild, to stay at home and get tested. Community testing helps us keep our community safe and saves lives For your nearest test location, visit: dhhs.vic.gov.au/getting-tested-coronavirus-covid-19

06.01.2022 Statement from the Mayor: "Three weeks ago, the Borough of Queenscliffe announced it was finishing construction on a free caravan dump point in Queenscliff. Residents, traders and caravanners have suggested a public dump point be installed in the Borough for some time, and this installation represented the culmination of this idea. In the last week prior to opening the facility, Council has met with a small number of nearby residents and has gained greater insight into conc...erns they have raised about the facility. In response, Council is considering the best way to provide a dump point while minimising any impacts on local residents. At the request of Councillors, the Borough of Queenscliffe will therefore not be opening the new facility at Hygeia Drive, and the facility will be removed in the coming months. The Borough of Queenscliffe is mindful of the importance of tourism to our local economy. Around 30% of jobs in the Borough are directly reliant on our visitor economy, and more than half benefit significantly from the direct and indirect effects visitor spending brings to our community. Councils 2018 Caravan Parks Masterplan notes that Council should invest in modernising caravan facilities as a priority to ensure our community continues to be attractive to tourists. With this in mind, Council will continue to explore alternative locations for another dump point elsewhere in the Borough."

06.01.2022 Back in January when bushfires ravaged throughout Australia, the Monday Craft Group at Queenscliffe Neighbourhood House wanted to contribute in some way. Reaching out to Towong Shire Council, this committed bunch of knitters and crocheters were able to spend the lockdown period creating some winter warmers for bushfire-affected families. Ruby and Maggie Klippel are just some of the Towong locals who love their new beanies and scarves! They had a fantastic time picking out exactly which items they wanted to wear. Well done, QNH team!

To enquire or make a reservation, contact the team on (03) 5258 1765 during business hours.

03.01.2022 Message from the Mayor Cr Ross Ebbels Over the past few weeks, race and racism has come to fore of our national conversation. These are difficult topics, but they are important for every community to discuss, including small communities like ours. Our Councils motto, Statio Tutissima Nautis, is a Latin phrase meaning A safe anchorage for seafarers. Since the earliest days of Aboriginal settlement, our Borough has been a place of gathering and of community. The words of... our motto give us an important ideal to strive towards but a powerful motto is only words on a page unless we resolve to live by it. Welcoming communities like ours are only welcoming when we work to make them welcoming. At Council, this means taking action like declaring our community to be a Refugee Welcome Zone, and finding better ways to celebrate our Aboriginal history in important celebrations. We all have a role to play in ensuring our community is place that celebrates everyone, regardless of their race or background. And as a community with a rich and important Aboriginal history, we can all make sure we acknowledge and celebrate the Aboriginal people and stories that are an essential part of what makes the Borough so special. Racism is never acceptable in the Borough. If you see or hear racist behaviour, its up to us to call it out. As Mayor, Im committing to calling out racism, and Ill hope you join me in making this commitment. You can read more about how to respond to racist behaviour on the Australian Human Rights Commissions website at https://itstopswithme.humanrights.gov.au/respond-racism. Calling out racist behaviour makes it clear that everyone is welcome in our community, and that racism is not. Together, we can make sure our community lives up to its highest ideals, and celebrates everyone for who they are.

Exercises are available to suit all abilities, including seniors. Congratulations to Queenscliffe Rotary for coming up with this exciting project id...ea. Thank you to the Victorian Government, the Australian Government and Queenscliffe Rotary for providing project funding. Peter from Queenscliffe Rotary is pictured here taking the equipment for a test drive this morning.
