24.01.2022 Hormonal IUD (Mirena IUD) Queensgate Medical Centre Contraceptive Procedure The hormonal (IUD) device is a small 'T-shaped' plastic contraceptive device which slowly releases progestogen into a woman's uterus. Progestogen is similar to the hormone naturally produced by the ovaries. The Mirena IUD is more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy and can last up to five years, which is why many of our female patients find this method of contraception convenient. ... The Mirena works by stopping the sperm and egg meeting by thickening the fluid around the cervix, which assists in preventing the sperm entering. It also works by changing the lining of the uterus and as a result makes it difficult for a fertilised egg to sick to the lining to start a pregnancy. One of our Queensgate Medical Centre doctors conduct this Mirena procedure in our clinic which is assisted by one of our registered nurses. Local anaesthetic is administered to help patients feel comfortable and ensure a quick and smooth procedure. If you are interested in this Mirena IUD procedure, please book an initial appointment with Dr Shiran Xiao to receive further information. 19.01.2022 World Family Doctors Day Today we celebrate general practitioners and acknowledge the hard work and dedication they have for their patients. The role of general practice doctors is to assist in individuals regular and ongoing care, which allows for a strong and long term doctor - patient relationship to occur. General practitioners are actually specialist doctors, due to the broad knowledge they must have in order to assist an extensive amount of health issues. Due to the r...egularity individuals see general practitioner doctors, these doctors dont often receive the amount of recognition and praise they deserve World Family Doctor Day (FDD) was first declared by WONCA in 2010 and it has become a day to highlight the role and contribution of family doctors in health care systems around the world. The event is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the central role of our specialty in the delivery of personal, comprehensive and continuing health care for all of our patients. Its also a chance to celebrate the progress being made in family medicine and the special contributions of family doctors globally. Queensgate Medical Centre would like to thank and celebrate our wonderful doctors here at our clinic. Each of our doctors are dedicated, diligent, understanding, empathetic and extremely knowledgeable, which makes a fantastic team of health experts for our patients.

17.01.2022 SATURDAY FLU VACCINES Commencing Saturday 16th May Do you work full time, have children attending school or can't make our Flu Clinics during the week? We always appreciate patient feedback and welcome any suggestions so we can accomodate our patients as much as possible. We understand our patients live busy lives and are sometimes unable to attend our Flu Clinics that operate on weekdays. Due to the demand of the flu vaccine, our practice will now also be operating a Flu Cli...nic on alternate Saturdays! This will allow for full time workers, students and parents to receive the flu vaccine without the hassle of missing important duties. Why get the flu vaccine: Influenza is a harsh and potentially life threatening illness that can often lead to hospitalisation. Flu vaccines cause antibodies to develop in the body approximately two weeks after receiving the vaccine. These antibodies provide protection against infection with the viruses that are used to make the vaccine. The seasonal flu vaccine protects against influenza viruses that research indicates will be the most common during the upcoming season. The flu vaccine protects against four different flu viruses which is known as the Flu Quadrivalent, these are influenza A (H1N1) virus, Influenza A (H3N2) virus and two strains of influenza B viruses. Eligible Government Funded Vaccine Patients: - Pregnant Women - Children aged between 6 months - children in year 6 - People 65 years and older - Aboriginal people 6 months and older - People with a chronic illness If you do not qualify for a government funded flu vaccine, you will receive a private flu vaccine which is $15 and your visit bulk billed. Saturday Flu Clinics will operate the same as our weekday clinics. Please see our website, previous posts or ask reception to explain the process. If you would like to book in for the Flu Clinic please call: 9456 1811 Patients are unable to book online for the Flu Clinics.

Mirena Information:... Mirena is a hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) that can provide long-term birth control (contraception). The device is a T-shaped plastic frame that's inserted into the uterus, where it releases a type of the hormone progestin. To prevent pregnancy, Benefits: - Thickens mucus in the cervix to stop sperm from reaching or fertilizing an egg - Thins the lining of the uterus and partially suppresses ovulation - Eliminates the need to interrupt sex for contraception - Doesn't require partner participation - Can remain in place for up to five years - Can be removed at any time, followed by a quick return to your normal fertility - Can be used while breast-feeding although your health care provider will likely recommend waiting six to eight weeks after childbirth because earlier placement increases the risk of injuring the uterus during placement - Doesn't carry the risk of side effects related to birth control methods containing estrogen Dr Shiran Xiao requires an initial appointment prior to booking in for the mirena procedure and she is currently only available on Saturday mornings. 02.01.2022 FLU VACCINE NOW AVAILABLE Book into our Flu Clinic We are pleased to say both private and government flu vaccinations are now in stock at Queensgate Medical Centre. With the unusual health events this year surrounding COVID19, doctors are urging patients to vaccinate against the flu to avoid contracting and spreading another serious illness. Please keep in mind the annual flu vaccine does not protect individuals against COVID19, it is considered a separate virus however con...tains similar symptoms and the same categories of high risk individuals. Every flu season is different, particularly now COVID19 is heavily affecting our nation, it is extremely important for not only individuals but also the health care system to keep influenza numbers low. This means it will take effort from individuals to ensure they are vaccinated and continuing to social distance. Influenza is a harsh and potentially life threatening illness that can often lead to hospitalisation. Flu Clinic: When: Our Flu Clinics will be operating Monday - Friday, morning and afternoon sessions available and the occasional Saturday, please check with reception.
