11.01.2022 #HistorybyRonCuskelly Once a Jolly Swagman During the sixties, Airlines of New South Wales operated a series of outback tours organised by Neville Salisbury. These tours were marketed under the name of Jolly Swagman Tours. Although several DC-3s were used, VH-ANR was the preferred aircraft because of its Viewmaster windows. Tours of this type subsequently became more widely known when operated by Bill Peach using Fokker Friendships as Aircruising Australia. Thanks to recent... correspondence with Graham Godwin of Scouts NSW, Air Activity Centre, we now have the itinerary of one of these Jolly Swagman Tours. Graham’s parents were passengers on this tour which was operated by VH-ANR. Sun 31MAY64 Dubbo - Walgett - Charleville - Longreach - Mount Isa Mon 01JUN64 Tour of Mount Isa Tue 02JUN64 Mount Isa - Brunette Downs - Katherine - Darwin Wed 03JUN64 Tour of Darwin Thu 04JUN64 Darwin - Daly Waters - Tennant Creek - Alice Springs Fri 05JUN64 Alice Springs - Ayers Rock - Alice Springs Sat 06JUN64 Alice Springs - Oodnadatta - Leigh Creek - Broken Hill Sun 07JUN64 Broken Hill - Dubbo. This schedule comprised 23.1 hours flying. Graham Godwin has another connection with VH-ANR. During the seventies, VH-ANR was used by Scouts NSW, Air Activity Centre as a static training aid. Although the aeroplane was not flown, the engines were run on at least one occasion, prompting a protest from Camden Tower because the smoke was obscuring the runway!

11.01.2022 This photo was shared to us by a recent visitor, Jesse. She told us Charles is the founding presidents grandson, making Dick Hitchins the great-grandson. Fair to say the fascination for planes was passed down to the new generation.

07.01.2022 Our historian Ron was on both the first and last flights of the 747. THE LAST 747 OUT OF BRISBANE HAS GONE. QF747 VH-OEJ 15TH JULY 2020... "I am convinced that there had to be an element of divine providence that allowed me the honour of being on board the last Qantas Boeing 747 out of Brisbane. Like much of Australia, I had fingers poised over the keyboard when the farewell flights went on sale. I had progressed to the payment page when the system crashed. The flights sold out very quickly. Ive heard estimates ranging from 4 to 18 minutes. Given that I was on the first Qantas 747 out of Brisbane on 12th December 1971 (the delivery flight of VH-EBD) I really wanted to collect the other bookend. I was extremely disappointed to say the least. When the farewell flights were first announced, I put together a list of 747 firsts and lasts and sent it to Qantas Media suggesting that they might find it useful in the lead up to the Brisbane flight. I heard no more about it. Then at about 6pm on the eve of the Brisbane flight on 15th July, I received a phone call from Qantas Media. They "had a cancellation" and wanted to know if I could join the flight. Im guessing they needed an historical hook for the media and my boarding pass for the first 747 fit the bill. Given that I was now a guest of the company, I could hardly decline the role of media tart, as one of my former workmates put it. The event was covered by Seven and the Courier-Mail took some photos but Im not really disappointed that they did not appear in print. During the flight, I had several total strangers come up to me asking if they could take a photo, not of me but of my 1971 boarding pass! Before departure, I made it known to the tech crew that; "Mr Sutter will be flying with us today." I had with me my signed copy of the late Joe Sutters book about his role as leader of the 747 design team. So if only in the form of his signature, Mr Sutter was with us on the final 747 out of Brisbane. The flight departed from Runway 19L and performed an orbit over the CBD before heading south coastal to the border before heading north to abeam Caloundra before returning to Brisbane via Moreton Island for a flyby of the tower prior to landing on 19L. I couldnt describe the flight as a joyous occasion for there was genuine sadness. Apart from the experience of being on the receiving end of a water cannon salute for the first time, my enduring and most touching memory is of lines of airport workers waving farewell to the Queen of the Skies." -Ron
