23.01.2022 How to interpret your vision test result: Distance visual acuity is measured on a distance vision chart. Visual acuity testing assesses your central vision only and is reported as a fraction, such as 6/12. The top number of the fraction is the standard distance at which testing is performed, i.e. 6 meters. The bottom number is the smallest size letter that can be read on the chart. If a person has a visual acuity result of 6/12 they would have to be within 6 metres of the letter that a person with a normal eye could see clearly from 12 metres away. A person with 6/6 visual acuity has normal vision by definition, although many people have vision better than 6/6. You may have heard people say that they have 20/20 vision. This is the same as 6/6, its just reported in feet rather than metres.

14.01.2022 Dr Phillipa Sharwood with the team from Queensland Children’s Hospital enjoying the 27th Australian New Zealand Strabismus Society Meeting in Adelaide. There were fantastic strabismus pearls from Ms Gill Adams of Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and local strabismus surgeons presenting their most challenging cases.

14.01.2022 About Dr Phillipa Sharwood Dr Sharwood completed her Bachelor of Optometry, Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery and Master of Medicine in Sydney before joining the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists specialist training program at Sydney Eye Hospital. On finishing her general ophthalmology training she moved to the UK to undertake 2 years of highly specialised medical and surgical training in childrens eye disease, complex strabismus, paediatric... cataract and genetic eye disease at the Cambridge University Hospitals and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London. Dr Sharwood has special interests in cataract surgery in both adults and children, strabismus surgery in adults and children and genetic eye disease. Dr Sharwood also consults and operates at the Queensland Childrens Hospital. In addition to her clinical work she enjoys teaching of medical students and registrars. She is an examiner in Ophthalmic Sciences for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland.

Eyelid malposition surgery Periocular reconstructive surgery Lacrimal surgery Orbital surgery He also enjoys treating a range of general ophthalmic conditions including pterygium and macular degeneration. Dr Stewart completed subspecialty fellowships in oculoplastic and adnexal surgery at the Oxford University Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital in the UK where he was the senior Adnexal Fellow. He is an examiner in Anatomy for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and a Senior Lecturer at Griffith University. He also consults publicly at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and the Gold Coast University Hospital where he is involved in training the next generation of Ophthalmologists. Dr Stewart has published extensively in peer reviewed literature.
