17.01.2022 RACE MEETING ABANDONED Racing Queensland confirms that as a consequence of the storms currently being encountered & forecasted to continue in Central and North ...Queensland in the coming days, the Cairns JC race meeting on Tuesday January 19 has been abandoned. The preeminent factor in the decision to abandon the meeting was the inability for it to be serviced from stewarding and broadcast perspectives due to likely road closures. RQ has given consideration to the programming of a replacement Cairns JC race date in the near future, however this cannot be accommodated from a broadcast perspective. As a consequence of that and in light of racing opportunities lost in the region in recent times, RQ has programmed three additional races at the Cairns JC race meeting on Saturday January 30. The races are: QTIS 3yo Maiden Hcp 950m $15,000 plus QTIS bonuses Maiden Plate (SW) 1250m $15,000 Class 1 Hcp 950m $15,000 Stakeholders should also note that RQ continues to closely monitor the weather situation in CQ/NQ leading into the Townsville TC race meeting on Wednesday January 20. Cairns Jockey Club will be contacting attendees, staff and sponsors throughout the day.

09.01.2022 Vale Larry Allen - Article by Tony McMahon Senior Rockhampton racing followers and industry stakeholders will be saddened to hear of the passing of jockey Larr...y Allen who was a leading figure at Callaghan Park in the late seventies and eighties. Brisbane based Allen, 66, long retired from jockeying died in a Brisbane hospital on Sunday after fighting cancer. A natural lightweight, Larry Allen came from a racing family with his father Neville and brother Terry successful Brisbane jockeys. Larry is best remembered in Rockhampton for winning the 1976 Rockhampton Cup on Lumley Fair. For many years he combined at Callaghan Park feature Saturday race meetings on the old sand track with the prolific winning Theodore based trainer Mick Hanlon. They struck up a most successful association and retired jockey Wally Welburn relates that Larry married one of Mick’s daughters. While his name is instantly recognised with success in Rockhampton, that pales into insignificance compared to Larry Allen’s feats on the Gold Coast. He was the first jockey to be awarded the moniker of King Of The Gold Coast well before subsequent Crown holders Ken Russell and Daniel Griffin. Twice during the mid-eighties, Larry Allen won the Gold Coast jockeys premierships. In fact, Larry remains one of less than a handful of jockeys to have ridden six winners in a day on a major Queensland track. Not surprisingly Allen recorded this remarkable feat on the Gold Coast on November 17, 1984 winning on Dandy Miss, Alchera, Amboina, Burano, Lunch With Reeta and Cruise Missile. His only other ride that day in York Street ran third. Mick Dittman (Eagle Farm, November 1, 1977) and Michael Rodd (Sunshine Coast, October 26, 2003) also accomplished the same rare exploit of half-a-dozen winners on the same program. Jockeys riding at the Rockhampton Jockey Club’s race meeting at Callaghan Park on Saturday will carry black armbands as a mark of respect for Larry Allen, gone but not forgotten.
