25.01.2022 Former Wallaroo Kirby Sefo has created a program to help young female rugby players thrive on and off the field . Kirby developed the Subbed program to inspire... and support girls interested in the game and discuss issues including mental health, cultural diversity, sexuality and relationships. When girls and women play, everyone wins. Participating in sport can improve psychological health and lead to lower levels of stress, anxiety and depression. Sport can also increase self-esteem and confidence in women and girls, and contribute to a sense of inclusion, identity and pride. Great work Kirby! You can read about Kirby's program here https://ab.co/30akHhZ Story and image by Brittney Kleyn, ABC News.

25.01.2022 These unprecedented times come with many challenges, particularly for families working from home while also supporting their children's learning. Australias fi...rst Womens Ambassador for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith, told Women's Agenda that it may also present an opportunity to encourage girls' interest in STEM. Here are some ways to encourage girls and young women to pursue their interest in STEM without overloading busy parents and carers: Have a meaningful conversation about how technology is used in the world, why the sky is blue, or simply look up at the stars from the bedroom window. Point out the scientific processes involved in cooking and other household activities. Encourage natural curiousity and opportunities to explore and discover. Create opportunities to learn about STEM through virtual visits to museums and zoos. Koorana Crocodile Farm's Facebook page features videos of baby crocodiles hatching and Queensland Museum can be explored via virtual tour https://bit.ly/2yv1zRz Highlight successful women in STEM so girls can envision following a similar path to success. Point out the female leaders, Chief Health Officers and scientists leading the response to COVID-19 and the doctors and nurses on the front line. Dr Michelle Dickinson is a Nanotechnologist and science communicator. She has produced a number of videos and resources to help explain Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) to kids https://bit.ly/347bqbY Read the full article at Women's Agenda https://bit.ly/343jslZ : Lunarbaboon www.lunarbaboon.com

20.01.2022 Invisible Farmer Project has shared a fascinating conversation with proud Koa woman, stockwoman and PhD researcher Dr Tauri Simone. While living and working on ...stations Tauri wrote her thesis on the history of Aboriginal women in the Australian pastoral industry from the 1860s onwards. Her research challenges existing beliefs and accounts that Aboriginal women were servants or sexualised objects and highlights their important contribution to the industry through hard work, resourcefulness and their passing of cultural knowledge through generations. Tauri gives a voice to the women who have been under-recognised and under-acknowledged throughout history. CULTURAL WARNING: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are advised that this story contains images of people who have passed away. Read the full conversation with Tauri here: https://bit.ly/2Mxzi0w It's a long but very interesting read, so you may want to save the link to revisit later. : Tauri at work. 01.01.2022 "I wanted to show that any woman in this world, no matter what age or situation you are, believe in yourself, and you can follow your dreams; it can be a really... hard road but never give up on yourself." ~ Sandra Creamer to ABC News Sandra Creamer made history this week when her son, Joshua, moved her admission to the Queensland Supreme Court, marking the first time in Queensland an Aboriginal barrister has moved the admission of their mother. Her story is incredible growing up as the youngest of 12 children in Mt Isa, Sandra's mother passed away when she was just six months old. She encountered many challenges along the way, leaving school at year nine, enduring a decade-long abusive relationship, and raising four children as a single mother while working part-time and studying externally. Sandra's persistence, resilience and determination saw her go on to become adjunct Professor at the The University of Queensland; travel the world to fight for the rights of Indigenous people including at United Nations forums, and now newly-minted solicitor. Congratulations Sandra! Read more about Sandra's story at ABC News https://ab.co/2X3kb4k and via Women's Agenda https://bit.ly/3hKzUgD
