25.01.2022 Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond our control. The 2020 Royal Easter Show has been cancelled. We have just been contacted by the RAS to advise of the ca...ncellation. The RAS will formally notify all competitors about this decision. We can appreciate that a decision such as this would have not been taken lightly given the magnitude of the Royal Easter Show. Please allow the woodchop committee at the show some time to sort through the implications of this decision for all involved. We will have close communication with the RAS over the coming days and will update you all as best we can. Simon

24.01.2022 375mm Australian Standing Block Championship Brunswick Heads 2020

23.01.2022 On the weekend we lost one of our well renowned Axeman, a gentleman and someone who gave a lot to the sport of Woodchopping. We thought it be appropriate to share on behalf of the Hillcoat Family a short tribute about Phil. Our thoughts are with Helen and the Family during this time. Phil Hillcoat - January 1935 to June 2020 Phil commenced woodchopping in 1964 at the age of 28. He cut second in nine different championships before winning the 14 underhand at the 1966 Townsvi...lle Show. He followed this with wins in the 13 standing block championship at the EKKA that year. 1970 was a golden year for Phil He was vice-captain of the Qld Team that went to Tasmania for the centenary of woodchopping He won the Hytest trophy for the most successful Axeman at Sydney Show Was chosen as one of three Axemen to join the Australian continent of Performers to go to Japan to appear at the Expo in Osaka Won the World 12 standing block championship at the EKKA Travelled to Brisbane to chop at the citizens welcome for the Queen and Prince Philip Phil won the 15 standing block championship at the EKKA in 1973. He followed this with wins in the same event at Adelaide Show in September and Perth in October of that year. In 1978 he won the inaugural trophy for the Queensland Champion of Champions! In these earlier years you had to be an all-round Axemen who could compete in all 3 disciplines - underhand and standing and the tree. Phil was a member of a private Veterans Team of six who travelled to NZ in 1977. They competed against a NZ team and this led to the formation of an official Australian and New Zealand Veterans team who now compete against each other annually. While in NZ Phil competed at the Masters Games and won a gold medal in the standing block at Wanganui. Over the years Phil had won many District, State and several Australian Championships. He won the Australian Treefelling Championship at the Centenary Show at Townsville. Even though Phil was the highest handicapped treefeller in Queensland at 132 seconds behind, he did not manage to win a treefelling championship at a Royal Show. He cut second in Brisbane and Adelaide on two occasions as well as places in Sydney though could not get a win! Phil was an active committee member of the QAA for 25 years! When the Australian Axemen’s Council was formed he was an original member and attended meetings in Sydney and Adelaide for many years. Phil’s overall contribution to Woodchopping saw him awarded a QAA life membership and in 1995 was the second person to be awarded life membership of the Australian Axemen’s Association. See more

18.01.2022 This was taken in the late 30’s. The photo was taken in Sydney while they competed at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. They are all from the Maleny / Woodford area of Queensland. From the left Marshall Winkle, Bruce Campbell (my Father) Ted Campbell (my Uncle) and Archie Taylor. It would have been a big trip for them.

08.01.2022 Hi All, Just a follow up note to confirm that with the Covid-19 restrictions being recently eased we are definitely proceeding with our Training/Coaching session and AGM at the Blackbutt Showgrounds on Saturday November 28. All the key information around this day is contained within the attached flyer and if there are any questions that you may still have then please don’t hesitate to ask.... This training/coaching session is a really great opportunity to improve skills and to date we’ve had some good interest in this. To ensure we are adequately prepared for the day, (with the likes of equipment, training blocks, catering, etc) can you please advise your intentions of attending as soon as possible via email to [email protected] Further to the above, the AGM is our most important meeting of the year and given the circumstances/disruption with Covid-19 this year it’s important we have as many as possible in attendance please.
