24.01.2022 This was a book with a surprise. I bid this book at what I felt was a reasonable amount of hours. Background: I have seen the embrittled yapp bindings many time...s since opening the doors to the bindery. I have even seen this particular set of end pages, several times. But, (and you knew the but was coming), this particular binding was held together, and a surprise because of the 1. the printed cloth end pages 2. hot glue used to attach said pages to the cover. The surprise came in the form of the glue which held the cloth endpages. The spine was constructed with a, now, brittle protein hide glue. Thus the surprise when I found the end pages held down with a high heat applied glue. I applied a paste to a less obvious square inch of the rear end page, with three successive 5, 15, and 30 minute wait time. After that long, I figured it was heat based glue and in 10 degree increments from 220, I found it took 350+ degrees to make the glue pliable enough to release its hold. I notified the client that the end pages could be saved, but it wasn’t going to be anywhere near perfect, and happen on time. It still delayed the book by 4 whole days. This is why I have set a minimum for each book at two hours plus materials. Things balance out, but this lesson was rather costly, as far as overages go. It ate up an additional three hours over the bid. The book before it, was dialed right in, and I’m hoping that the next few books allow for the wash to happen. So, the moral of this story is that if you’ve seen one book, you’ve seen one book. The slight variations can trip you and slow your earnings capability. Each one is a learning opportunity.

16.01.2022 The first volume in the long-running girl detective series, "The Secret of the Old Clock," was published 90 years ago under the pseudonym Carolyn Keene. In a tr...ibute to the iconic sleuth, author Theodore Jefferson writes, Agency. It is that which forms the foundation for any hero’s ability to save the day. In America, agency for teenage girls in literature made its debut in 1930 in the person of Nancy Drew. This original Mighty Girl character paved the way for many more heroic female characters and inspired generations of real-life girls and women. Ghostwritten by Mildred Wirt Benson and later revised by Harriet Stratemeyer Adams, the first volume of Nancy Drew had a huge influence on young readers. Jefferson writes, Nancy Drew provided them with stories of someone like themselves who had a positive effect on the world instead of passively sitting at home She is a character with that magical ‘what if’ question woven into her identity, and one that effortlessly captures the imaginations of readers by allowing them to participate in a world where the answers to that question are just as entertaining as the stories themselves. At the time, some viewed Nancy Drew as a poor role model, contradicting adults while she squared off with the villains she is mechanically inclined and at the same time doesn’t act like most people in the 1930s would have expected a teenage girl to act. In fact, many libraries and bookstores refused to carry the Nancy Drew stories. Despite -- or because of -- that disapproval, kids collected the books voraciously, and in the midst of the Depression, used copies were shared and traded like trading cards are today. As a result, any kid, even those who couldn’t afford new books, would very likely get to read every adventure starring their favorite character. The tremendous influence of Nancy Drew continues to this day asserts Jefferson: It is difficult to overstate how powerful Nancy Drew’s presence remains in literature and in other media. She has influenced film, comics, video games and animation for [90] years, and will continue to do so as long as teenage girls take the lead as our heroes in the imaginative worlds of adventure." 07.01.2022 My Booker 2020Work In Progress Designer Bookbinders were really pleased to be able to unveil the six bindings done for this year’s Booker Prize for Fiction f...inalists last week. But these bindings don’t just make themselves so we asked the seven Fellows (seven because this year one of the bindings was done collectively by two Fellows) to document their work in progress so we could show what steps go into making a fine binding for this prestigious literary competition. This year the binders were: Kate Holland, Derek Hood, Stuart Brockman, Lori Sauer, Rachel Ward-Sale, Sue Doggett and Dominic Riley. One the next six days we will be posting up these work in progress photos, which also appear in our Winter newsletter. In the short period between shortlist announcement and the award ceremony, the binders must read, design and produce a hand bound fine binding, together with a protective container, for presentation to each of the authors. A process which might normally take three to four months or more has to be telescoped into as many weeks, but it is this which makes the commission such an interesting one for those taking part. Today we feature the binding of ‘Shuggie Bain’ by Douglas Stuart (Winner of this year’s Booker Prize) which was bound by Derek Hood and Kate Holland. This series of work in progress photos shows the many stages that went into this binding including: - Gilded book edges - The leather joints being put down - The book was covered in full biscuit-coloured goatskin - A geometric shape was cut out and peeled from the covering leather - Inlays were glued into place (including faux shagreen) - The binding was hand tooled with dots, plus the title was hand-tooled onto the spine - Gilding was also applied to the endpapers The main inspiration for the design is the housing estate Sighthill in Glasgow where we first meet Agnes and Shuggie, the pebble dash and blues and greys of the high rise buildings, and on the top floor Agnes leans out of her window gazing down on the carpet of Glasgow. On the back cover elements of black and white for Shug with the red light of his receding taxi cab. Over both loom the colliery wheels of Pithead depicted in a myriad of gold dots. Inside Elizabeth Taylor, Agnes’s heroine and touchstone, watches over a Sighthill walkway whilst a gilded beer can stain lies opposite. @douglas_stuart @picadorbooks @panmacmillan @katehollandbook #FinestFiction #shortlist #bookstagram #instabooks #amreading #igreads #author #fiction #TheBookerPrizes #DouglasStuart #ShuggieBain #KateHolland #DerekHood #2020BookerPrize #bookbinding #workofabookbinder #bindingthebooker #finebinding #designbinding #boundbythebest
