14.01.2022 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE QBOA ready for Queen of Gems International Jewellery Design Awards 2020 ... Calling all lovers of Queensland Boulder Opal ! Entries are now open for the Queen of Gems International Jewellery Design Awards and, apart from our usual Professional Category and Non-Professional Category, a new Open Category has been added to focus on objects and jewellery produced using any method, including cast forms or CAD. Queensland Boulder Opal must be the focal point of the design for all categories, but innovation is encouraged in the use of complimentary stones and/or precious and non-precious metals. Judging takes place before the festival; judges are chosen from the Jewellery and Opal industries, with several international professionals partaking in this daunting task over the years. The annual event is held at the world class Waltzing Matilda Centre, Winton, Queensland, comprising of a daytime exhibition of the design entrants, followed by a relaxed evening cocktail party where the winners will be announced. Professional Jewellers compete for a $2,000 cash prize, while the Non-Professional and Open Categories have an increased cash prize of $1,000 each. Non-Professionals are also encouraged to apply for the Vince Evert Bursary of $300 cash, awarded to further develop entrants practice, and is not necessarily awarded to the category winner. The Queen of Gems awards are part of the outback towns Opal Festival, an annual two day event including the Opal Trade Show, International Jewellery Design Awards, and many evening opportunities to meet and greet the community of Opal miners, cutters and makers from all of the Queensland Boulder Opal fields, and our Opal community from further afield. Voting for the Peoples Choice Award takes place during the festival, where visitors can view the outstanding pieces from our Australian and International jewellers. This years Opal Festival will be held on Friday 10th through to Saturday 11th July, 2020 in Winton, Queensland. The deadline for entries this year will be Monday 22th June, 2020. All entry forms and festival information can be found on the QBOA website, visit www.qboa.com.au.
