22.01.2022 We are calling on QDN members to help build better homes for all Australians. In early 2021, Building Ministers from across Australia will meet to consider whether to include mandatory minimum accessibility standards in the National Building Code. This decision will affect hundreds of thousands of Australians who cannot currently find appropriate housing. This will be a critical decision for the hundreds of thousands of Australians with mobility impairments who cannot get acc...ess to housing that meets their needs. Changes to the National Building Code will then come into effect in all states and territories on 1 September 2022. The Building Better Homes Campaign is a coalition of peak bodies and agencies working to secure mandatory accessibility standards within the National Building Code. QDN are asking our members to support the Building Better Homes Campaign by signing and sharing the petition to the Hon Karen Andrews MP, Chair of the Building Ministers Meeting. This petition will be presented to the Building Ministers Forum at the end of February. Their signatures will strengthen the call for change. Alternatively, you can email our Building Ministers to inform them of your support for a minimum access standard for housing in the National Construction Code. For more information click here https://www.buildingbetterhomes.org.au/mission.html

15.01.2022 Statement by Nigel Webb, Chairperson of Queenslanders with Disability Network, in response to news that Minister ORourke not contesting seat of Mundingburra As a statewide organisation of, for and by, people with disability with over 2,000 members and supporters, Queenslanders with Disability Network has had the opportunity to work extensively with Minister ORourke over her five years as Minister for Disability Services. With the announcement today that she will not be stan...ding at the upcoming state election, on behalf of the QDN board, staff and members, I would like to acknowledge Minister ORourkes dedication and commitment to building a more inclusive state for Queenslanders with disability. During Minister ORourkes time as Minister for Disability Services, more than 75,000 Queenslanders have joined the National Disability Insurance Scheme, giving many choice and control over their disability supports for the first time in their lives. While there is undoubtedly much more work to do to ensure the scheme is accessible and delivering for Queenslanders with disability, it is important to acknowledge the significant progress that has been made. Additionally, we recognise Minister ORourkes leadership in implementing All Abilities Queensland, a statewide disability inclusion plan that was developed in consultation with more than 1,000 Queenslanders with disability. On a personal level, QDN has been fortunate to have Minister ORourke attend many of our events over the past five years. QDN members often express how much they appreciate Minister ORourkes approachable and warm manner, always taking time to hear directly from people with disability about how government decisions are impacting their lives. We wish Minister ORourke all the best for the future and thank her for her significant work on behalf of people with disability. With the state election on 31 October and whatever the results, QDN looks forward to working with the next Minister for Disability Services and Queensland Government to continue to build a more inclusive Queensland for all. Coralee ORourke MP

05.01.2022 Last week, QDN Member Peter Yeo appeared on A Current Affair as part of his PointZero5 campaign for spinal and medical research. Peter is passionate about making life safer for people that use wheelchairs and mobility devices. He became aware that many Queenslanders living with disability have been injured through lack of restraint on Queensland buses and wants this to change. Watch Peter talk about how important it is to have active restraint anchors installed on Queensland... buses for wheelchairs or mobility aids. The Australian Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport Guidelines (2004) require that all passengers be able to travel with the same level of safety. The Standards recognise the use of both active and passive restraining systems. This means that the use of active restraint anchors is not currently required to meet safe travel guidelines on buses. The Queensland Government’s Department of Transport and Main Roads Disability Action Plan 2018 -2022 states that these restraints keep a mobility device safe while a vehicle is moving. The Plan will include research into the implementation of restraint systems for people traveling with mobility devices on buses. The Government has also established the Accessible Transport Advisory Council, an independent advisory body that includes experts and representatives from diverse groups, including those with disability. QDN looks forward to working with the Accessible Transport Advisory Council and the TMR Disability Action Plan to deliver safer travel for all Queenslanders traveling with mobility devices. Thank you, Peter, and our colleagues, at Spinal Life Australia for your advocacy and work leading change in this area.

02.01.2022 The voice of QDN members is needed! Have your say on equal access to public buildings today by taking part in this important online survey! The Australian Government is doing a review of the Premises Standards 2010, and asking people with disability for information about their everyday experiences with equal access to public buildings. ... They want to know whether the Standards are working and how they could improve them. They are looking for your opinion about inside building and common areas. This can include shopping centres, railway stations and their lifts and platforms, public pools, airports and accessibility of adult change facilities. Taking part in this survey means that you can share with the Australian Government what works and doesn’t work for you. The government will use this information to understand your day to day experiences and to provide a focus for their review of the Standards. A discussion paper on the Standards review and findings will be released in 2021. We will then make a submission on this paper. Complete the survey online through the link below The survey closes next Monday 30 November and can be submitted online. https://consult.industry.gov.au//2020-premises-standards-/

01.01.2022 The Queensland State Election is on 31 October 2020, so we need to act fast to make sure our voices and disability issues are firmly on the agenda this election campaign. Today QDN is proud to launch our 2020 Election Platform and Advocacy Toolkit. QDNs Election Platform, My Disability Matters, is informed by our 2,000+ members and is full of practical ideas of how we can work together to create a more inclusive Queensland. Weve already sent the platform to all political pa...rties asking them to sign on to our commitments before Election Day. But the change were calling for requires all of us to take action. So were calling on all Queenslanders with disability and their supporters to pledge that at this election #MyDisabilityMatters.
