23.01.2022 Haven't spotted a koala during one of your walks yet? There is a good reason why that could be! Their bum matches the gum! A koala's bottom has a white and grey speckled appearance which helps them be perfectly camouflage in their natural habitat. If you looked up on your walk, do you think you could spot this gorgeous boy?

23.01.2022 Thank you to Delilah Tometzki and The Rescue Collective for these custome made gorgeous pouches that keep Kurt and Ruby snuggled oh sooo cozy! The warmth makes them feel at home, like a mum's pouch

18.01.2022 Rest in Peace, Alexander With heavy hearts, we share this last update on Alexander. Despite all the best efforts, his most recent car strike injuries were too severe for his little body fight. Alexander was put to sleep yesterday. Unfortunately, this stretch of road (Winstanley St, Carindale, near the bridge between Anna Smith OBE Quota and Winstanley St Park) is a known animal & vehicle collision hot-spot and we at Queensland Koala Society respond to koala incidents on a r...egular basis here. Alexander’s story is sadly not unique. Thank you to all the staff and volunteers at the RSPCA Wildlife Hospital who worked tirelessly to help Alexander throughout his current and previous two car strikes. Thank you also, to all of the members of the public who wished him well right alongside us. We’ve said goodbye to too many of our precious koalas this season....and it’s not over. Keep Alexander in mind as you drive through koala corridors. Slow down, be watchful and should you see a stricken koala or one you believe needs help, call for help. Program Queensland Koala Society’s rescue hotline number, 0419 709 639 on your phone. Help us be there for the next Alexander.

18.01.2022 Tree hugging is a cool!! Koalas rest their bodies against cool tree trunks to help regulate their body temperature Studies show that tree trunks in large trees were up to 5 degrees Celsius cooler than the surrounding air! How amazing is that!!

14.01.2022 Sweet Figaro was finally released.... Stay safe sweet thing It was an absolute pleasure being able to help with her recovery.... https://donate.qks.org.au

14.01.2022 Rescue Update! sound: on On the 24th of August, an alert motorist reported a koala that was thought to be stricken by a vehicle on the very dangerous Creek Road. Our rescuers attempted to bring the koala to safety for hours but he evaded us. Queensland Fire and Emergency services came to assist and finally, the koala was brought to safety.... The koala was tagged as part of a koala tracking research program. We learned his name is Conner. Conner, the koala was transported to Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital for an examination. A thorough assessment showed he was not struck. However, Connor was diagnosed with Cystitis which is a symptom of the often fatal disease, Chlamydia. Conner was indeed lucky to have been able to receive treatment in time! Australia Wildlife Hospital continues to provide treatment for Conner, and they expect him to have a full recovery!! Awareness from concerned neighbours like you helped Connor survive. We are in the middle of the long koala breeding season. Your continued vigilance remains important for our local wildlife. Please remember to slow down on roads, and watch your surroundings for wildlife. If you believe a koala is in danger, please call us anytime day or night

13.01.2022 Mums and joeys on the move! We have responded to several mums with joeys finding themselves in dangerous situations, along busy roads and some who found themselves a bit disoriented. If you see any koala by a busy road or in a situation that could still lead to danger, please call us. We are more than happy to do a wellness check. Call/ text (0419 709 639) and please stay with the koala until help arrives. We mobilize quickly and can respond in minutes. ... Many thanks to Donna Turner for calling us and looking out for this joey and it's mum. Whilst these cuties ended up being safe, that is not always the case. Your photo really shows how vulnerable and beautiful our koalas are! : Donna Turner

12.01.2022 Today's Kurt post is a different one. We have been holding our breath as we worked through some unexpected and heartbreaking medical news. Recently, Kurt was taken for a checkup at Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital where we received confirmation that he tested strongly for conjunctivitis, a symptom of chlamydia. He also had pneumonia which research suggests can be caused by chlamydia. In all likelyhood, Kurt's mum was ill with chlamydia and passed it on to him at birth prior to... her untimly death. You can just imagine how heartbreaking this news was to hear. Kurt is receiving round the clock care along with so much extra love during this critical time. We finally have a sense of relief after his most recent visit with Dr Ludo at Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. After a full examination along with a second dose of antibiotics, we expect Kurt to get stronger, healthier and moving towards recovery. Kurt still will face challenges fighting this disease but with the dedicated and compassionate care from Dr Ludo along with the entire team at Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, we know Kurt has the absolute best medical team on his side! Here is little Kurt eating medicinal melaleuca which koalas are known to eat when they feel unwell. He also received a pot of pap to help replenish beneficial gut flora after the course of antibiotics. We love seeing the koalas in care flourish, but rescue work is incredibly emotional and heartbreaking. Believing you are giving them a chance, a real chance is what makes this emotional roller coaster ever so worth it. You can help Kurt by donating at https://helpkurt.qks.org.au

01.01.2022 An update for this dear boy, Alexander. On July 11, Alexander suffered two consecutive car strikes on Winstanley Street, Carindale. Queensland Koala Society responded to his complicated rescue and transported him to RSPCA where he spent 123 days receiving specialized medical care and rehabilitation for a fractured pelvis. We had the pleasure of releasing him back into his home range on the 11th of November...just a few days ago. We were in awe of his journey, his strength ...to recover like he did and felt joy that he was home again. Wished him a long and safe life. Last night, Friday the 20th of November, after only 9 days back home, Alexander was again struck by a vehicle in the exact same location on Winstanley Street, Carindale. He was trying to cross this busy road which intersects his home range in this important koala corridor. He was rushed back to RSPCA Wacol where again, he is receiving treatment for his sustained injuries. Alexander was home, where he wanted to be, where he needed to be. Unfortunately, his home is fragmented and dangerous. Solutions such as virtual fencing, fauna overpasses and underpasses could help koalas like Alexander. The koala habitat that remains needs protecting and more koala food trees planted, this helps all wildlife who are trying to survive in these busy urban environments. We here at Queensland Koala Society are devastated for poor Alexander, and we are hoping Alexander can again recover from his new injuries. Please think of Alexander when you are on the road. Koalas are still on the move. Please slow down and always call for assistance when you believe a koala has been injured. Stay with the koala until help arrives if at all possible. Queensland Koala's rescue hotline is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week 0419 709 639

01.01.2022 It's always very sad when a new joey comes into care Like Kurt, Camille should be with her mum but sadly, mum was unable to be saved. Little Camille is another orphan from this year's trauma season. Camille will be in care for at least the next 12 months. We are not mum but we will do our very best to facilitate every opportunity to develop the skills needed to be eventually released back into the wild! ... Lot's of learning through exploring, climbing, familiarizing with new sounds and smells.....lot's ahead for these two cuties HTTPS://helpkurt.qks.org.au
