25.01.2022 Former RAN Able Seaman Jim Spotswood is one of the few remaining commissioning crew members from HMAS Diamantina in 1945. Jim is a sprightly 97, but due to Victoria's Covid-19 lockdown, he was unable to leave Melbourne and join us for the VP Day 75th Anniversary Commemoration last month. However, Jim's three Brisbane-based grandchildren Joel, Jemma and Zoe filmed a special interview with their Pa on the ship's quarterdeck to hear his memories of life onboard "Tina".... #queenslandmaritimemuseum | #qmm | #VPDay | #VPDay2020 | #VPDay75 | #HMASDiamantina | Australian War Memorial | Royal Australian Navy | South Bank, Brisbane | Visit Brisbane

24.01.2022 Devastating floods struck Brisbane during the week of January 10-15, 2011. The Brisbane River broke its banks, and peaked at 4.5m early on January 13. The flood peak was lower than the terrible floods of 1974 (which was 5.45m), but increased development along the Brisbane River meant it caused more damage. ... The Queensland Maritime Museum site at South Bank was inundated, including the historic South Brisbane Dry Dock. Volunteers worked around the clock (including sleeping on site!) to keep the WW2 frigate HMAS Diamantina from hitting the sides of the dry dock. Unfortunately the light house boat Carpentaria was lifted off its blocks and capsized. However, it has since been restored. Thanks to all those volunteers, members and supporters who gave their all to QMM in its time of most need. Thanks also to the Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council who provided support in the aftermath of this catastrophe. 23.01.2022 September 3 is Merchant Navy Day, when we remember the role merchant mariners have played in nautical history, particularly in times of war. In this video, curator of our "Vision of the Seas" exhibit Don Braben walks us through a triptych of 1988 works by artist John Wood. The "Chilean Reefer", "Gneisenau" and "Rescue" tell the story of a refrigerator ship sunk in the Atlantic in 1941. ... Thanks to all of our merchant seamen and women for their service. #queenslandmaritimemuseum | #qmm | #merchantnavyday | #merchantnavy | #VisionsoftheSea

21.01.2022 Happy Fathers Day.

21.01.2022 An emperor penguin joining a trek near the Mawson Research Station.

21.01.2022 Today, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we will mark the the moment the guns fell silent at the end of World War I in 1918. More broadly, the minute's silence we observe is to remember all who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice in times of war. The Naval Ode (pictured below) pays particular tribute to those who lost their lives at sea, and is recited before the immortal words of poet Laurence Binyon:... "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them." Lest We Forget.

21.01.2022 Ahoy there, new recruits! As we work diligently towards re-opening the Museum, this weekend were welcoming new volunteers to our South Brisbane site for orientation. Thank you to all newcomers for giving your time to help QMM resume operations, and to our existing volunteers for training them up! #queenslandmaritimemuseum | #QMM | #covid19safe

18.01.2022 What was it like to witness the detonation of an atomic bomb? Ex-RAN stoker and longtime Queensland Maritime Museum member Leo Bull knows. Almost 68 years ago, Leo was serving onboard the aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney in October 1952 when it bore witness to the first British atomic test in the Montebello Islands off Western Australia. ... In this video, Leo tells us what it was like to see the destructive power of an atomic device, and how fortunate he was compared to so many others who were placed more directly in front of the resulting radiation. Our thanks to Leo for sharing his extraordinary story, and to QMM member Keith Boulton for research. #queenslandmaritimemuseum | #qmm | #maritimehistory | #montebelloislands | #britishatomictesting

17.01.2022 Everyone knows painting requires moving things out of the way - but the logistics are rather more complex when youre dealing with a frigate! Both the "whaler" and "cutter" boats had to be craned off HMAS Diamantinas main deck on Monday as part of the decks repainting. #queenslandmaritimemuseum | #qmm | #hmasdiamantina

14.01.2022 Updated Membership Program Details As you know, in March this year Queensland Maritime Museum (QMM) was forced to close its doors in response to COVID-19 health restrictions. When we excitedly re-opened in September, QMM honoured all memberships until we were able to unveil our new, integrated membership program and make it available on the QMM website. Technical issues, a new platform and challenges with volunteer resourcing - including the resignation of our valued Membersh...ip Secretary (Mike Sobyra) - contributed to the delay. QMM would like to express its sincere thanks to Mike for his service in the role of Membership Secretary over many years. As QMM navigates its way through the current climate, there continues to be opportunities for friends and members to contribute. It is with excitement that QMM is now ready to launch its revised membership program. We hope that this program offers those wanting to join or become involved with QMM more options and flexibility to do so. It is also hoped that the process of joining us, and of updating our membership system, will become more efficient and user-friendly. With plans for the 2020 AGM now underway, it is more important than ever to ensure our membership is current. QMM Membership We invite all members to renew their membership here: https://maritimemuseum.com.au/about/corporate/ Friends of QMM If your interests or circumstances are not right for QMM membership at this time, then we suggest our new 'Friends of QMM' category as an alternative way to becoming involved with and supporting QMM. https://maritimemuseum.com.au/support/friendsofqmm/ See more

13.01.2022 Heres a podcast recommendation for those interested in life at sea before the age of steam! Author Stephen Taylor talks to the BBCs History Extra podcast about the experiences of ordinary British seaman during the heroic age of sail. 08.01.2022 This mystery object was found last Friday by our Curators and has them stumped. Any ideas?? The size of this object can be judged by the normal size chair it is on. It is all brass and extremely heavy.... The 4 bladed propeller-like thing on top is screwed on so does not rotate. The 2 horizontal arms move up and down with only a little movement.
