24.01.2022 This week, 13-19 September 2020, is Disability Action Week. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our community spaces and workplaces, how we connect with their families, friends and communities and how we support people with disability. Access-ability improves and benefits the lives of everyone, not only for people with other abilities but also for the whole community.

23.01.2022 Dear valued clients, members, volunteers and our broader community, Queensland Narrating Service has put into place precautionary measures to protect the health and safety of our community. In order to ensure the continuity of our service delivery QNS Staff will work from home for the foreseeable future. We have taken this decision to limit the impact of the spread of Covid-19 in the community.... We do not expect any significant disruption to service delivery as QNS volunteers work from home and interact with staff via email, phone and the postal service. Similarly our clients also interact with staff via email, phone and the postal service. Therefore we envisage service delivery will continue as normal. Please feel free to contact Queensland Narrating Service on email [email protected] or visit our website http://www.qns.net.au/ Stay well during these challenging times. Our priority is looking after each other and to be able to continue to provide our services to our client base.

19.01.2022 Congratulations to John Simpson on being awarded Order of Australia (AM) at this years Australia Day awards ceremony. John acknowledges that although the award is in the name of one person it reflects the efforts of many people over a long period of time bothf within Blind Citizens Australia and through other community involvements. Johns many years of advocacy on behalf of the community reminds him of various successes, all of which have come about as a result of the combined efforts of many people.

17.01.2022 On this World Harmony Day 2020 take time to reflect during these changing and challenging times on what it means to live in harmony, not only with your family, friends and neighbours but also with our natural and built environment. No doubt planned Harmony Day events have been cancelled but we just wanted to share with you Tamworth Libraries event, "You are a Living Book", an idea that can be taken into your daily lives. From the oldest continuous culture of our first Austra...lians to the cultures of our newest arrivals from around the world - Australia is a vibrant and multicultural country. Share your stories and others may feel inclined to share their stories with you. Let's celebrate our diversity by sharing our individual stories, celebrating culture, new beginnings, breaking barriers. Lets share our stories!

15.01.2022 This year Anzac Day will be somewhat different. A day usually commemorated with dawn services and parades to show our appreciation to all those who have served and sacrificed. While those services and events will not happen this year we can show our appreciation in other ways. An initiative from RSL Queensland is to "Light Up The Dawn" from your driveway, doorway or in your home at 6am on ANZAC Day. Together, we can stand in solidarity with our ANZAC's.... 14.01.2022 "You dont have to worry about the check if you aren't able to pay".

14.01.2022 After 53 years of service to people in our community who have a print disability the Queensland Narrating Service will hang up its microphones and close its studio door at the end of June 2021. The staff and committee have worked tirelessly for the best part of five years to maintain funding for our organisation beyond the implementation of the NDIS, with limited success. Unfortunately, with the introduction of the NDIS we have fallen between the cracks like many other smal...l organisations. Government funding has enabled QNS to provide affordable services to our clients. Staff and our dedicated volunteers have made numerous requests to both state and federal governments via local members to secure funding because we have also been shut out of the NDIS service provider space by the NDIA who considers our service mainstream and is only interested in supporting one large organisation for audio delivery. We have tried our very best to secure on going funding in any way, shape or form. It is a sad situation for our clients that the government, either state or federal, can't find $130,000 a year to continue funding an organisation that provides valuable services to people with print disabilities. QNS is not viable without government funding therefore the committee and members were faced with the difficult decision to wind the organisation up after 53 years. Thank you all for your support over the years.

11.01.2022 With health attention focused on Covid-19 its also important not to forget your eye health. In case you missed it last week was World Glaucoma week. "Glaucoma Australia Ambassador Kirk Pengilly: Return from the Brink of Blindness. Kirk Pengilly, of INXS fame, was just 29 when he came within millimetres of losing his sight to acute angle closure glaucoma. An integral member of the band, playing guitar, saxophone, and providing backing vocals, he had no knowledge of glaucoma. ...Although hed had regular eye examinations, there had been no signs detected or symptoms to indicate that he was at risk of developing the disease. Now an ambassador for Glaucoma Australia, Kirk is helping create a greater awareness of the condition for all Australians." https://think.glaucoma.org.au/ - taken from Mivision - the oplthalmic journal 3 March 2020

05.01.2022 The QNS VIP Book Club winds up after 17 years!!! After operating since 2003, first at the Brisbane City Council library in its Adelaide premises and then later in their new location, Brisbane Square Library, sadly the VIP Book Club has run its course. Dwindling numbers due to ageing and illness have meant that it is no longer viable to keep the book club going. Over the course of the book clubs lifetime we have heard from authors such as Matthew Condon who has worked to unco...ver crime and corruption in Brisbane, Queensland. We have heard from Ian Callinan, high court judge and author who writes crime fiction as well as the wonderful local legend, Hugh Lunn, who has entertained us all with his wit and humour. We have heard from narrators and narrator authors. You have all been so engaged with the events and the content of the books, which has not only enriched your participation but also the guest authors. I know that many authors who so generously gave up their mornings to share a behind the scenes insight into their writings thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with you all along with the informal chat at the end. It has been an absolute pleasure to share these mornings with you all and chat about all manner of things over and sandwich and cup of tea.
