25.01.2022 We are incredibly saddened with the loss of Katherine Leadbetter and Matthew Field from Alexandra Hills in Queensland who, whilst crossing the road, were killed by a driver of a stolen vehicle in a hit and run crash. Katherine and Matthew were preparing to become parents. We grieve with the Redlands community, with the Redland City Council and the couple's friends and family. We should all be able to walk and wheel safely, freely and without harm. We have been strengthened... by the community who gathered last night at a candlelight vigil. #wewalkqld #qldwalks

25.01.2022 "Built and natural environment features can support or hinder activities which impact health. For example, accessibility to a wide variety of destinations, street connectivity, and close proximity to open green spaces and parks all promote increased walking, which in turn positively impacts physical and mental health. Conversely, factors such as exceedingly high or low temperatures, poor air and water quality and noise pollution can deter physical activities and reduce psycho...logical wellbeing. " Chief Health Officer, The health of Queenslanders 2020. Report of the Chief Health Officer, Queensland. Congratulations to the Chief Health Officer and her team for releasing the latest findings of the health of Queenslanders, in what must have been an incredibly busy time for the CHO and her staff. https://bit.ly/36frppT Health and Wellbeing Queensland Queensland Health #physicalactivity #movemoresitless #healthyactive #walkingforhealth #EveryStepCounts #wewalkqld #qldwalks

25.01.2022 We are planning for walkable communities and places to help deliver on the priorities outlined in the Queensland Governments first Walking Strategy. Following... our consultation on creating healthy and active communities, we have developed resources to help further support the design and development of more walkable neighbourhoods. We look forward to sharing these in the near future! #betterplanning4QLD Department of Transport and Main Roads (Queensland) | Queensland Walks | Heart Foundation Walking

24.01.2022 This year 28 people walking* and 7 people riding were very sadly killed on our Queensland roads. This is a 75% increase in the death of Queenslanders who are walking, running or moving with the assistance of a mobility device, and a 40% increase in people riding their bicycle from the previous year. 128 people who walk in Queensland were hospitalised, and 181 bicycle riders were hospitalised according to Department of Transport and Main Roads (Queensland) Road Crash Weekly ...Report 9 November 2020. We all have a responsibility to help everyone to get to their destination unharmed. You can help all people arrive safely to their destination by slowing down, removing distractions, not driving under the influence or when tired, and being ready to react. Slower streets are known to have a positive outcome in reducing all road related trauma and you can help. Remember, not all people can hear or see traffic, and many people are not able to read the speed of a car or able to easily look over their shoulder or predict traffic behind them. Expect the unexpected and let's keep all Queenslanders safe. #NRSW #nationalroadsafetyweek #RoadSafetyWeek #roadsafetyawareness #roadsafetyzeroaccident #wewalkqld #qldwalks *Queensland Walks refers to walkers as: walkers, runners and people who move with the assistance of a mobility device. 23.01.2022 Only in Rockhampton, Queensland can you have the chance to vote for a Mayor with a tropical fruit nickname! Is voting for a spikey and delicious Ananas comosus going to provide investment in a more walk-friendly Rockhampton? Tomorrow, Rockhampton voters will be back at the polling booths with a by-election for their Rockhampton Mayor. We've noticed some of the candidates talking about access and inclusion, pedestrian improvements and ways to improve the health of Rockhampto...n residents through connected paths, kerbs and safer crossings. There are 17 candidates, and we've noticed two candidates talking about pedestrian issues. Considering we are all pedestrians, shouldn't all 17 talk about how they will make #rockhamptonwalkable ? #wewalkqld #qldwalks

22.01.2022 Great walking environments are safe, they are properly lit, in many cases the paths are widened, shaded and weather protected. "If there is any benefit to come out of this crisis, its the opportunity to reclaim the streets." Brisbane can become one of the worlds great walking cities, says Harvey Lister. #qldwalksweek #wewalkqld #qldwalks Heart Foundation 10,000 Steps Queensland Government Brisbane City Council

21.01.2022 All Queenslanders have the right to participate in their community equally. Have you seen the Department of Transport and Main Roads (Queensland) Inclusive Mapping Pilot Project? 21.01.2022 Rockhampton Regional Council have been doing some great work on making Rocky more walk-friendly with newly announced projects that include new footpaths and walking trails. We are excited to see a call for feedback on walking and cycling infrastructure and services. We encourage Rocky residents to provide your feedback to help make the region more walk-friendly. Some suggestions you may be interested to include:... a separated walking and cycling strategy: walkers and riders have different needs increased funding for walking infrastructure especially in and around hubs like schools, hospitals, community space and shopping centres a focus on functional-based walking for all ages, abilities and needs (to and from the shops, school or work), as well as recreational walking infrastructure road speed reduction in hubs, road safety for all users, safe crossings including raised priority crossings and zebra crossing on slip-lanes necessary amenities like shading through trees or shade structures, water, toilets and seating connecting streets and local neighbourhoods to green space, parks and local business walking tourism options to entice visitors to Rockhampton (urban walking and bushwalking). #wewalkqld #qldwalks #everystepcounts #walkfriendlycommunities Margaret Strelow Mayor 10,000 Steps Heart Foundation Heart Foundation Walking CQUniversity Australia Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation Bushwalking Queensland Inc. 21.01.2022 This month, we have been focusing on one suburban location in Brisbane Queensland called Aspley which is on the north side of Brisbane. Weve been reviewing how walkable the suburb, ward and electorate is. The verdict? No so walkable for functional walking, but some lovely recreational shared paths (often called bikeways) along the creeks. We know that our walking friends understand that being able to walk to the shops, to school, to local businesses is as important as buil...ding and designing for recreational walking. We tweeted Brisbane City Council asking them to review and maintain some footpaths and crossings in Aspley, especially near schools like the Aspley State School, where a beautiful mural by Artist Wendy has been forging ahead. Video below. Youll notice that the artist makes a comment about the speed of cars and how dangerous walking near the school is. Council were quick to respond to our list of footpath maintenance issues near this Active School Travel area, however much work is needed to be spent on footpath widening, new footpaths and safe crossings to support kids and adults to walk. As part of this local activation work, a local resident posted a message asking Aspley and surrounding residents what urgently needs to be improved in their area. No less than 30 different locations were identified by local residents calling for pedestrian focused improvements urgently needed within hours of the post. We will be sharing these requests with Councillor Fiona Hammond Cr Tracy Davis and Bart Mellish MP- Member for Aspley If youd like to see some of the Aspley footpaths and crossings from the comfort of your screen check out our channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1MEieZFBXQofTK_pUsRt9A If you would like to do similar work in your neighbourhood to advocate for a more walk-friendly suburb or town, wed love to hear. Brooke also appreciates the burst of colour on her favourite walk along the river in Brisbane city. 17.01.2022 Brisbaners, and Brisbane visitors. Whats better than a bridge over troubled waters? A green bridge of course! Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner Cr Ryan Murphy and Brisbane City Council are working on green bridges for Brisbane and have released draft designs for Kangaroo Point and Breakfast Creek green bridges. We congratulate council on this commitment with an aim to making Brisbane more walkable with safe, connected, and separated infrastructure. We know that every $1 spent on... walking has $13 in return to the city and people! Overall, Queensland Walks is happy with the designs, but we suggest shading is essential on Breakfast Creek, and some more detail needed on connecting paths and crossings for Kangaroo Point and CBD. We will be providing this feedback in more detail to council and publishing to our website. We really encourage the walking community to provide feedback to council. Feedback closes September 18, so get cracking! https://buff.ly/2GAAPmy #wewalkqld #qldwalks #walkablebrisbane #safeconnected #healthyactive #spaceforhealth

16.01.2022 Today is Walk Safely to School Day. Wed like to re-frame the name of today and call it Drive safely near schools and neighbourhoods for kids to walk or ride easily and safely, plus support active infrastructure and programs Day. It doesnt have the same kind of panache however! ... Ways that we can make it safe for kids to walk or wheel to school includes: - accessible ramps for wheelchairs, prams and other wheels, tactile markings, and wide connected paths - slower streets in school precincts at all times (allowing for after school care, sport, extra curricular and more) - a mix of safer crossings around the school and streets with shorter crossing times - police enforcement of excessive speeds, non-compliance at intersections or poor driver behaviour like making a u-turn or turning over a school footpath - enforcement and education for drivers who park over footpaths, or place bins over the path - funding programs like Active School Travel, NaturePlay, RACQ Streets Ahead and other behaviour change programs -shading to prevent skin cancer, heat stress and provision for safer and more attractive paths - match funding of roads and intersections to increase funding for footpaths, crossings and more thereby making walking a compelling option. 16.01.2022 School is back 27th Jan :-) Many children will be walking and wheeling to school and possibly for the first time! Being active to school is the best way for our kids to be happy and healthy and ready to learn so let's make it easy and safe for everyone. You can do your bit by driving slowly and driving with care. If you can, park away from the school gate, and remember u-turns, double parking, speeding and the zebra crossing car drop manoeuvre all increase the risk to our school community. And, if you see families walking or wheeling to school, tell them they are legends for making the school gate safer with one less car near the school precinct. #activelegends #happyhealthy #roadsafety RACQ

12.01.2022 This week we are reviewing Department of Transport and Main Roads (Queensland) draft guidelines for pedestrian wayfinding signage and guidelines for treatment options over driveways to improve safety for pathway users. Not as exhilarating as a walk, but really important work We thank TMR for drafting these documents and calling for feedback. As we read over these documents, we were reminded of a case study produced by Heart Foundation about the 10,000 Steps walkway signage. This really helpful signage shows us the direction of a walking route, distance in steps, minutes and metres. Huzzah! You may have seen a #10000steps sign on your walks. We love this walking story submitted from Ipswich: "While working from home indefinitely, going out for walks has given me a greater appreciation for nature and the world we live in. Seeing my neighbourhood in different ways through my walks makes me strive to venture out more to different spots and explore the town I live in".... During the heavy times a few months ago with COVID-19 and the lockdown that meant working from home indefinitely, the only way I could feel a satisfying level of normality was going for walks in nature outside of work. It was my only escape from being in the house and kept me happy and satisfied in a difficult time. I was also able to get a better understanding of the neighbourhood I live in and the unique features I never knew existed so close to home". Thank you for sharing. We agree.
