24.01.2022 Happy World Parrot Day! Australia is truly the ‘land of parrots’ from majestic black-cockatoos to Budgerigar swarms, raucous lorikeets to shy rosellas and eve...rything in between, Australia is home to 56 species of charismatic and colourful parrots. And #WorldParrotDay is a chance to celebrate them all! But while our parrots are some of our most iconic and beloved birds, they are also among our most threatened. Threats like land clearing, de-forestation, logging, bushfires and Beak and Feather disease have seen some devastating population declines and now, parrot species like the Swift Parrot, Orange-bellied Parrot and Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo are facing extinction. Pictured here are a pair of Blue Bonnets, a quietly beautiful parrot found in the drier parts of inland eastern Australia and the Nullarbor Plain. To take action and help protect birds like our parrots, visit: https://www.actforbirds.org/ Blue Bonnets by Jan Wegener

19.01.2022 Not only is it important to keep Owls safe, it is important for all our native wildlife.

19.01.2022 All our species are important as each other. Please remember every little act we do will assist their survival.

19.01.2022 Some lovely details in Ronelle Reids latest work Look her us and follow her @ronellereidart Posted @withregram @ronellereidart Working today on a drawing Keep your friends close for my solo exhibition. Our red-necked wallaby is having to endure the cheeky antics of this rainbow lorikeet whether she likes it or not.... I think all Australians or anyone who has travelled to our shores will recognise the loud and bright Rainbow Lorikeet. These important pollinators are often fiercely defending their food from other birds with brass screams that can be quite deafening if you are near a flock. They are as my mum would say common as muck and are classed as least concern on the IUCN Redlist. As are our red-necked wallaby. I am having to bust out some colours that I dont normally use for this one. This drawing will be on display at my solo exhibition Urban Menagerie at the Logan Art Gallery January 22nd-February 27th. I would like to thank the assistance of the Logan Art Gallery and The RADF for making this exhibition possible. The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Logan City Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

18.01.2022 Blue-tongue lizards are out and about at this time of year. They are commonly seen in suburban areas around pools and ponds or basking in patches of sunlight as... the warmth helps them digest their food. WIRES is often called to rescue and care for lizards that have been injured by lawnmowers or whipper snippers. Please remember to check the yard before you mow in case you have a resident lizard.

15.01.2022 Brilliant work from Louise Saunders. Follow her work @drawingonnature Another painting inspired by the wildlife of Lady Elliott Island. Noddy Terns had just arrived from the north when l was there last year. They were sunning themselves on the roads with wings and tails fanned out. I was told they were trying to rid themselves of mites by sunbathing. So quiet, beautiful birds, beautiful Island, fabulous holiday. Pastel with a watercolour background.

13.01.2022 Absolutely stunning piece from Esther Horton. Wonderful memories of the critically endangered Regent Honeyeater pair visiting suburban Brisbane last year, feasting on Grey Ironbark trees. It is a Watercolour painting on a Full Watercolour sheet (56x76cm) using just 4 colours and a straight black was not one of them. Some thoughts about the painting from Esther-... There are only estimated to be 300-400 of these birds left in the wild. There is a breeding program at Taronga Zoo and captive bred birds are released from time to time. This pair was not banded, so they hatched in the wild. Incredible to see them and I felt I needed to paint that memory! The painting is called Threatened in recognition of these birds being critically endangered and also the top bird looking out for threats from above. The painting was composed from the hundreds of photos I took at the time and the bird specimens I studied at the Qld Museum. The feather patterns in particular are incredibly intricate and complicated. I also felt the beautiful late afternoon golden light and shadows on the branches and leaves needed to be included. It is the biggest and most detailed painting I have ever done and this photo below really does not do it justice. See more

12.01.2022 These beautiful sculptures are by our Life time member Janna Pameijer. Absolutely stunning Janna!

11.01.2022 A few of our members are involved in Living With Koalas 100 Artworks for a Koala. Here is another beauty from Sandi Lear. For more work from Sandi Follow here Sandi Lear - Artist Posted @withregram @livingwithkoalas 100 ARTWORKS FOR A KOALA.... This is the one of two wonderful watercolours from Sandi LEAR - award-winning watercolour fine artist based in New South Wales, Australia https:// @artistsandilear Soulful, atmospheric, moody, ethereal, Sandis style is full of movement, capturing her subject with light and colour. Title artwork 1 Meliora W 76 cm x H 56 cm Watercolour on full sheet deckle edge on Arches 300 gsm. Endangered, homeless, our koalas are desperately trying to recover. Braving the elements, ravages of man and fire, the does come down from the canopy with their joeys, searching for sustenance, water and a new home. They will not find it without mankinds help. We could do well to learn from the perseverance of these most precious Australians, navigating their way through an every changing environment, their tenacity, bravery in defence of their young and their boundaries, learning the balance of life, precarious as it may be at times. They exemplify dedication in their fight for survival, as they courageously make their way toward a better life, a brighter future. www.sandilear.com See more

09.01.2022 Amazing work from QWASI member Garry Rogers.

09.01.2022 Working together with partners is crucial to ensuring we have the best possible chance to help conserve our #threatenedspecies. And thanks to one of our partner...s Seqwater the vulnerable Richmond birdwing butterfly is making a comeback! As a result of resourcing from Seqwater, a specially refurbished enclosure has been prepared at David Fleay Wildlife Park to continue the captive breeding program for the butterflies. Seqwater have also donated 30 birdwing butterfly vines for the enclosure, this together with a donation of 60 vines from Wildlife Queensland will help us to raise adult birdwing butterflies. The vines are a crucial component to the conservation of the butterflies and are used for egg-laying by adult female butterflies and for feeding the hungry caterpillars until they reached the pupal stage between 25 and 50 days. The program has now successfully reintroduced the birdwing butterfly into suitable habitat around Hinze Dam and Numinbah Valley. This program couldnt be possible without our partners, and we thank them for the valuable contribution they are making to help conserve our threatened species. Check out these great images of the Richmond birdwing butterfly (in its pupae stage as well!), the birdwing vines and Dr Ian Gynther, from our Threatened Species unit and Mitchell Thomas-Carr from Seqwater. What would you like to know about the Richmond birdwing butterfly, or the captive breeding program? Drop your questions below and we will have one of our experts respond! #qldenvironment | #threatenedspecies

08.01.2022 Beautifully delicate work by Nadya Neklioudova Posted @withregram @nadyawildlifeartist Oh my goodness. This has been one heck of an epic painting. But I think it is finally finished?! "Life Cycle of a Dainty #Swallowtail #Butterfly in my #Garden" .... (I dont like calling it a Dingy Swallowtail, but yes thats its other common name! Scientific name Papilio anactus.) . I had started it specifically for the #qwasi #QLDWildlifeArtists exhibition at Mary Cairncross Reserve, but... thats been put on hold until who knows when, thanks to COVID-19. Oh well, the fact that I suddenly had no deadline meant that I could a) spend as long as I wanted on the tiny details, and b) put the painting away for a while, which is what happened. Last week I finally took the time to finish it! TWO butterflies, one caterpillar, two chrysalis, even two teeny tiny eggs, all on a #native Finger Lime bush. . A3 size watercolour on Arches paper. Available. (Unframed for now - framed image is a mockup, because Instagram wont allow the correct shape of the artwork to be posted by itself.) . Prints also available in my #Etsy shop - link in bio. . . . #papilioanactus #daintyswallowtailbutterfly #daintyswallowtail #gardenbutterfly #gardeningaustralia #butterflylifecycle #butterflygarden #butterflyart #butterflylove #inmygarden #watercolour #painting #queensland #nativeplants #nativeflora #fingerlime See more
