25.01.2022 Last night was our 3rd call out to a heater related fire in 7 days. Please check your heater is in good working order and follow this advice from the Tasmania Fire Service. General Safety Always keep clothes, newspapers, kindling and other flammable materials at least two metres from the heater or two giant steps away from it.... Fixed heaters Have any fixed heaters installed to Australian Standards by a professional installer. Open fires and woodheaters Place a metal mesh fireguard in front of open fires and keep the door to woodheaters closed to protect against flying sparks and embers. Unless it’s got a good guard, put the fire out completely before leaving the house or going to bed. Fireguards will also help protect children from burns. Chimneys and flues Have your flue installed to Australian Standards by a professional installer Clean your chimney or flue and check it at least once a year. Insulate the flue from roofing timbers and wall panelling. Portable heaters If buying a portable heater buy one that will switch off when knocked over. Keep portable heaters away from areas of heavy traffic. Always turn off your portable heater when going to bed or leaving the house. For more information visit the TAS Fire web page. www.fire.tas.gov.au.

20.01.2022 As bushfires continue to affect large parts of Australia, generous Tasmanians are asking a lot of questions about how/where/what to donate. In Tasmania, we have... seen bushfires affect communities in the Upper Derwent Valley and the Fingal Valley so far this season and people impacted are being looked after through regional recovery arrangements. So far the impact on the wider Tasmania community has been minimal compared to the utter devastation on mainland Australia. We have also received many offers of charitable donations to the Tasmania Fire Service and our brigades. TFS is a government-funded organisation that doesn’t operate on charitable funds. While we are so grateful for the generosity shown towards us, we simply do not need financial donations. What our firies would love to see is donations being channeled towards the victims of the ongoing bushfire emergency. See below for official channels to donate to To support those affected by the bushfires: AUSTRALIAN RED CROSS BUSHFIRE DISASTER RELIEF & RECOVERY FUND https://www.redcross.org.au//disaster-relief-and-recovery- To support affected wildlife: RSPCA https://www.rspcansw.org.au/bushfire-appeal/ or VIC https://rspcavic.org/giving/donate WIRES https://www.wires.org.au/donate/emergency-fund To support firefighters: NSW RFS https://bit.ly/2umf1Fi VIC CFA https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/about/supporting-cfa SA CFShttps://cfsfoundation.org.au/donate

12.01.2022 If an emergency vehicle with flashing lights appears in your rear view mirror you know to safely get out of its way. To help protect our emergency workers including career and volunteer fire fighters, from 1 December this year, a new road rule will apply when approaching any stationary or slow moving emergency vehicle with lights flashing. It will mean you must safely slow to 40kmh as you pass the emergency vehicle. This applies whatever direction you are travelling in, unles...s there's a dividing barrier. Take care when slowing and avoid braking suddenly. More information at www.rsac.tas.gov.au

07.01.2022 Bushfire smoke affecting Tasmania Heavy smoke from Victorian bushfires is causing very poor air quality in Tasmania. The air quality is worst in the northern an...d central regions of the state but is also affected in the south. Very poor air quality poses a health risk, particularly to vulnerable people. Those most at risk are people aged over 65 years, babies and young children, pregnant women, and those with heart or lung conditions, including asthma. Even healthy people can experience short-term health effects in very poor air quality conditions. A weather change forecast for the late morning and afternoon may shift the smoke from Victorian fires that is currently affecting Tasmania. However, with bushfires burning around Tasmania, it will remain important to protect yourself from smoke. The safest thing to do when it is very smoky is to stay indoors, and to avoid outdoor activities. It important that people with asthma or other chronic conditions follow their health plan and try to reduce the smoke they breathe. On smoky days everyone should try to: Stay indoors, close your doors and windows Set any air conditioning to recirculate the air Avoid exercise outdoors Go somewhere less smoky like a friend’s place, a library, or shopping centre Importantly, anyone who becomes unwell should seek medical help.
