21.01.2022 Happy bisexuality visibility day! As far as I know I'm the only out bisexual MP in any parliament in Australia. Although I am kinda chuffed with the title, I’d ...really love to see that change. Bi visibility has to happen in the parliament, in the media, and by people in leadership roles. And by bi+ people across the country. Every one of us can make a difference to the lives of present and future bi+ people by being as open and as out and as proud as it’s safe for us to be. That’s what opens people’s eyes, that’s how acceptance grows. That’s how society shifts. Regardless of how large or small your acts of pride are, I’d like to take the opportunity to say - I see you. I see you even when others don’t. I will continue to share our stories and advocate for our rights inside and outside the parliament. You are amazing, resilient, and a constant inspiration to me.

21.01.2022 "It's time that our state banned so called so-call gay conversion practices! Sexuality and gender identity conversion practices are based on a dangerous ideology that LGBTQ+ people are ‘broken’ or ‘disordered’, and it’s high time they were outlawed. The Greens have long joined calls for the state government to exercise its power to outlaw such practices, and we owe it to survivors and those still being targeted today to have the most effective possible laws to do this. That’s why survivors of conversion practices should be front and centre of any discussions around banning conversion practices, and their voices must be heard. Any legislation banning conversion practices must actively refute conversion ideology and the falsehoods behind it and support survivors wherever possible, through counselling or redress." - Sam Hibbins

12.01.2022 Today is Trans Day of Remembrance, marking the end of Trans Awareness Week. Today is an opportunity to pause and to honour the memory of those who have los...t their lives because of transphobia and discrimination. It’s also a day to celebrate the strength of the trans community in the face of adversity and the long history of activism that has sought to make the world a safer and more inclusive place for trans people. Today is a reminder for allies of the trans community to make sure we’re stepping up our support and advocacy for trans and gender diverse people all year round. I won’t stop fighting, both inside and outside Parliament, to make the world a better place for all LGBTIQ+ people.

08.01.2022 The Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practices Prohibition Bill 2020 has passed the Victorian Legislative Assembly! Today, Victorians have witnessed dozens of... wonderful contributions from MPs in support of the Bill today-- with many quoting letters that you wrote to them. It's not over yet, the Bill will return to the Upper House next year and it will need your continued pressure on our leaders to pass the Bill. Together we can make sure that LGBTQ+ people feel whole and valid just as they are, and are free to live their lives authentically and with pride.

06.01.2022 Jane Moran, Greens candidate for Whitehorse Council (Cootamundra Ward), received the survey in an email. I opened the survey and then, as I started to read through it, quickly put it in its rightful place the bin. There should be no place for homophobia or discrimination in 2020, Moran told Star Observer. Ironically the Australian Christian Lobby’s survey was the most un-Christian thing I’ve seen in a long time, a nasty piece of work. Religion should not interfere with politics. It is the role of councillors to represent everyone in their community and especially those most marginalised, including LGBTQI communities. The Greens epitomise kindness and inclusion and that’s why I am standing as a Greens candidate at the upcoming local election, added Moran.

04.01.2022 Sharath and I started talking in the most unexpected way. I’d hailed a cab when the driver made a racist remark‘Dude, you have an Indian name but don’t look I...ndian at all.’ I thought it was very racist; I spoke about it on Instagram. Sharath was already following me, but he only DMed when he saw that post ‘India is so diverse...of course all Indians don't look the same’, he said. Sharath shared his own experiences with racismAt the offset, being brown men in America connected us. But I was apprehensive after I found out that Sharath and I lived on opposite sides of the country So, once when we were Facetiming, I told him that I wouldn't be able to leave my city. His response was, ‘There’s nothing holding me back.’ I was stumped; my heart melted. So on Valentine’s day, I suggested a virtual date; Sharath loved it! We picked the same restaurant chain, but in our cities. Although we were miles apart, my heart was beating so fast. We went through the menu together, the butlers sang for us, we ate chineseit was perfect. A few weeks later, we finally met in San Francisco; it was nothing less than a Bollywood movie At the airport, our eyes met, we ran towards each other and kissed. We spent the next 11 days doing everything as a couplemovies, museums, dinners. Once, as we were walking around, I wanted to hold his hand, but wasn’t sure about how he felt. So I asked him, ‘Can I hold your hand?’; he burst out laughing. He said,’ Of course you canalways!’ We were going to travel for his birthday, But Covid hit uswe dropped the plan. As I was wondering how we’d make the relationship work, Sharath surprised me by flying down on his birthday. Everytime I had doubts, he was calm; he never lost faith in us. A month later, I introduced him to my parentsMy mom was so emotional. The next time he flew down, I took him to the riversideAt sunset, I went down on my knees and proposed. Sharath yelled, ‘Oh my god yes!’we decided to get married right away; our families were thrilled! We had an intimate, but traditional wedding. Sharath is from Bangalore and I’m Punjabi so we had both rituals. We both had Baarats and made our vows as equals. But after the wedding, when I put up our photos on social media, it upset people I didn’t even know. Comments like‘You can’t have a gay Punjabi wedding’, ‘These Americans are making a mockery out of our culture’ were passed. Sharath and I weren’t rude, but we made sure we gave them all a fitting responseWe are Indians and we have every right to follow our heart. Recently, a Punjabi guy asked me to stop posting pictures, so I shared another photo and tagged him! Sharath and I often talk about how lucky we’ve been We never thought it’d be so easy but everything worked out like it was meant to. I guess sometimes to find the right person, you have to take a leap of faith and just...trust. See more
