24.01.2022 drummond street services stands in solidarity with people speaking, standing and acting against the systemic racism in America. We do so because this racism has... led to hundreds of black deaths, the criminalisation, impoverishment and destruction of lives and communities. As an organisation committed to social justice, we are making our solidarity public. We send strength and power to the Black Lives matter movement and others who are working to name and end racist policing practices used by the police and military forces towards black Americans and other people of colour. We also want to acknowledge the resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, African and other people of colour here. We want our colleagues and the communities we work alongside to know we hear you; we see you and we are taking action to dismantle our own privileges. The experience of African Americans is shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. The systemic racism and subsequent injustice experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities started with the stealing of their land. Any solidarity for black lives in America must be accompanied by recognising the ongoing struggle of what occurs here in Australia. Black deaths in custody occur here. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to be criminalised and overrepresented in our criminal justice system including prisons. These facts in the Australian context must be enough to see us join the movement of our first nations people to end Black deaths in custody. We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people -Martin Luther King We know entrenched and systematic racism leads to the over policing and profiling of people of colour both here and America. To remain silent at this time would be an act of injustice. drummond street is using the platform and privilege we have to ensure we centre the voices and experiences of all oppressed people and stand in solidarity. We call on all individuals and organisations to join us. We encourage you to read, learn, educate and act. Dont stay silent. We all must act. Solidarity is never more important than now! In times like these we are calling on you demonstrate your allyship by doing the following two small but important steps: 1. Make a sign using the #Blacklivesmatter #Blaklivesmatter hash tag. Take a photo on your phone and send to [email protected] Your photos will be combined into a public display of solidarity on ds social platform. Note: blak is not a typo or spelling mistake. Blak is a a term used by some Aboriginal people to reclaim historical, representational, symbolical, stereotypical and romanticised notions of Black or Blackness. 2. Make a pledge What action will you take to end systemic racism and support black/blak people during these times. Send through your pledge to [email protected] If your pledge involves a link please share it too. Some examples of pledges might be, I pledge to read Tangled up in Black, by Gary Foley. I pledge to listen to a particular podcast, I pledge to talk with my kids about racism, to name a few things. One of the most important steps allys important addition to these actions you can take is self-education. There are plenty of online resources, books, and podcasts you can engage with to deepen your knowledge and understanding. We can learn so much by centering the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander folks and decolonise our thinking. Use social media follow indigenous orgs and individuals who amplify the voices and stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. You can show support by supporting and local Indigenous owned and run businesses.

17.01.2022 Good afternoon! Heres some info from the Department of Justice and Community Safety for anyone who would like to change their birth certificate details (Victor...ia) which will be happening in the next few days! . One cool thing is that theyre waiving the cost of a name change if you apply to have your recorded sex marker changed at the same time. Reforms to the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 1996(BDMR Act) commence on 1 May 2020, removing barriers for Victorians wanting to change the record of sex in their birth registration. The Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria (BDM) has worked closely with the trans and gender diverse community in implementing the reforms. Detailed information about the new change of record of sex application policies and processes will be available on BDMs website from 1 May: www.bdm.vic.gov.au. The LGBTI legal service is also running a Change your ID Day again this year on the 18th May with representatives from Vicroads, births deaths and marriages and their legal team. We have copies of the application to change record of sex- adult born in Victoria and the application for recognised details certificate- adult born outside Victoria so feel free to DM us or @Queerspaceyouth if you would like a copy. Forms will also be available on our website soon! Take care and stay safe!#drummondstreetservices #thedrumyouth #invisible #LGBTQI+ #Queerspace #Queerspaceyouth

15.01.2022 If you are thinking about attending a Black Lives Matter protest, here are some things to consider to make an informed decision. - The purpose of the protests is to call for Australia to stop black deaths in custody and to stand in solidarity with George Floyd and the Minneapolis freedom fighters for Black Lives. - Due to COVID19, there are additional risks including:... The COVID19 health risk to yourself, your family and community If you have symptoms or live with immunocompromised people please STAY HOME The potential risk of violence (from police, counter protestors etc.) Police have said they will not fine people for breaching social distancing, but that doesnt mean they wont - If you choose to attend, heres how to keep yourself and others safe: Before the protest: Make sure the protest is lead by trusted organisers - in Naarm (Melbourne), its @warrevolt Plan to attend with a group and stay together If you are underage, go with a trusted adult Let someone know where you will be and make sure they have your contact numbers Write emergency contact numbers on your arm Keep legal support information with you Wear a mask and gloves Bring hand sanitiser Wear comfortable, warm clothes and closed toed shoes Bring water and snacks - At the protest: Follow the leadership of the organisers/marshalls Do not incite or engage in violence or looting If you need help, speak to a marshall Do not speak to the media Do not take/post photos with peoples faces or identifying features without consent SOCIAL DISTANCE at all times - After the protest: Go home immediately Throw away disposable masks/gloves Wash clothes and reusable masks/gloves Consider quarantining for 14 days - COVID19 carriers can be asymptomatic If you display symptoms, get tested - Remember, your safety is paramount and its okay if you cant attend the protests. 12.01.2022 As many of you know, some areas of Narrm/Melbourne have returned to level 3 restrictions as a result of increased covid19 cases. As many families and young people we work with live within these areas, we wanted to make sure that everyone understands what these restrictions mean you can and cannot do. There has been some panic within media reports and some misinformation online about people not being able to leave their suburb, or travel to postcodes that are listed as ...hotspots. For the most up-to-date info, check out https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/new-restrictions-melbournes-hot - there is a list of FAQ at the bottom of the page that clarifies a lot of questions. Weve included some key points below. Finally, we understand that this may result in people from our community feeling further isolated, especially those living at home in unsafe/unsupportive environments where you cannot live your truth, or experience violence. Please contact us, Queerspace, Switchboard Victoria, WithRespect if you require support! Some key points from the DHHS website (remember tho, this is current only at time of posting this and we recommend you check the link above for the most recent updates). "From 11:59pm on 1 July, the restrictions will not prevent you from leaving your area. However, if you live in a restricted postcode, you are required to stay at home except for four reasons shopping for necessary goods or services, care or compassionate reasons, exercise, and work and study (if you cannot work or study from home)." "shopping for necessary goods or services, such as food or groceries, is one of the four reasons to travel to a restricted postcode. Additional restrictions on businesses apply in these areas (e.g. restaurants are takeaway only)." "Partners living separately are able to visit each other at home. While they are visiting you in a restricted postcode, they must abide by the restrictions and can only leave your home for one of the four reasons."

07.01.2022 Tyrown Waigana, a Perth based artist and designer, has been named as this years winner of the prestigious National NAIDOC Poster Competition. His winning entry... - Shape of Land - was judged by the National NAIDOC Committee to have best illustrated the 2020 NAIDOC theme: Always Was Always Will Be. Waigana, a proud Noongar and Saibai Islander, has previously been named as one of WAs best new and emerging Indigenous artists. According to the 23-year-old, his winning entry depicts the Rainbow Serpent coming out of the Dreamtime to create this country and how we are strongly connected to it. The Rainbow Serpent is represented by the snake and it forms the shape of Australia, which symbolises how it created our lands. The colour from the Rainbow Serpent is reflected on to the figure to display our connection to the Rainbow Serpent, thus our connection to country. The overlapping colours on the outside is the Dreamtime. The figure inside the shape of Australia is a representation of Indigenous Australians showing that this country - since the dawn of time - always was, and always will be Aboriginal land, Mr Waigana added. To find out more about this years artwork and winning artist and to download a digital copy of the 2020 National NAIDOC Poster visit the NAIDOC website. Free printed copies of the 2020 National NAIDOC Poster will be available in coming months.

03.01.2022 Reposting this from @ohhappydani lets talk about allyship during a crisis (and beyond!) PICK A CAUSE. Youre more likely to be effective (and follow through with action) when youre focused on one cause! Examples include: poverty, homelessness, immigrants + refugees, the Indigenous, frontline, the incarcerated, etc etc. ... UNPACK & LEARN. Become aware of the most urgent needs and comb through as much information as possible. The more you know, the more helpful youll be. THINK LOCAL. Chances are, the orgs on the ground are more aware and knowledgeable of whats high-priority. Before you act, listen and follow their lead so you can maximize your impact within your direct sphere of influence. TAKE ACTION. Its time to pull-up! Assess your resources and take targeted, direct action that will lead to relief. Whether this means buying groceries for someone, donating computers to programs, or spreading the word about the cause - something must be done! REPEAT! The work continues, and youre needed for the long-haul. See more
