17.01.2022 HOW TO: Deadlift with trainer Aron Williams. Deadlifts are one of the most complex exercises. When performed correctly, they are extremely effective in building both strength and muscle. There are so many minor details which are crucial in injury prevention, as you’ll see below. There are different variations of deadlifts, the steps below are how to perform a 'conventional' deadlift. Performing the deadlift:... 1. Position your feet forward, hip-width apart, with your mid-foot under the barbell 2. Get down to take your grip by setting your hips back, & once you cannot bring your hips back any further, bend your knees until the bar almost touches your shins 3. Grip the bar with hands outside of your legs, shoulder width-apart 4. Retract your scapula by ‘packing’ your lats 5. With a neutral spine, flex your bum and engage your core 6. Pick the bar up off the ground (think about pressing down into the floor through your heels) 7. Continue pressing down with your feet until the barbell passes your knees, then thrust your hips forward until you are standing upright 8. Reverse your movement until the bar returns to its starting place on the ground If you’re ever unsure about your deadlift technique, our Personal Trainers are always more than happy to help!

05.01.2022 HOW TO: Back Squat with Trainer Aron Williams The barbell back squat is the king of leg exercises. It is great in toning, strengthening and building muscle in the lower body. Performing the back squat:... 1. Rest the barbell over your traps and shoulders 2. Make sure your hands are even on each side of the bar 3. Place feet at least shoulder-width apart (this will vary from person to person) 4. Flare toes slightly outward 5. Brace by actively driving your upper back into the bar, so that your chest does not fall forward 6. Unrack the bar 7. Take 2 steps back, away from the rack 8. Breathe in and fill your stomach with air 9. Evenly distribute the weight along each foot 10. Begin the descent by bending your knees, lowering until your thighs are at least parallel with the ground 11. Exhale either as you push up out of the bottom back squat position, or once you are back at the top of the movement If you’re ever unsure about your squat technique, our Personal Trainers are always more than happy to help!
