21.01.2022 CALM IS AN IMPORTANT BEHAVIOUR We teach our dogs all sorts of things sit, stay, lie down, come, wait, watch, paw and the list continues. We sometimes fo...rget that teaching calm is also an important behaviour and has so many positive applications for both us and our dogs. Calm can be defined as the absence of agitation or excitement; a feeling of tranquillity; serenity and peace. These feelings are so often lacking in our lives and in those of our dogs. Begin teaching calm by marking the behaviour with praise and a low value treat when your dog displays it. A low value treat will prevent your dog from getting too excited. When you reward a behaviour you like, your dog is more likely to repeat it. If you’re playing an exciting, high energy game with your dog, take frequent breaks before starting up again to teach your dog how to unwind to a calmer behaviour. Keep treats stashed around the house, so you can catch and reward your dog for sitting, lying down, resting quietly, or any other calm behaviours. This post provides some simple ideas on how to instil calmness in your dog. I use the ear massage method if I take one of my dogs to the vet or the groomer and it works quickly to calm them down. Play relaxing music that is specifically made for dogs this can work well with a dog that gets over excited in a car or that has storm or firework fear. Scent work also creates a feeling of relaxation, lowers a dog’s pulse rate and creates feelings of wellbeing. Chewing is another powerful relaxation tool to lower stress levels. Dogs use the act of chewing to relieve stress, frustration or anxiety. Chewing has a calming effect on the adrenal-pituitary axis in the brain which triggers the release of endorphins. It’s like self-medication for stress or anxiety. One of my dogs that is reactive and afraid of people will happily sit in the middle of a crowd of people and contentedly chew a bone, completely relaxed. This has become her go to behaviour whenever she is feeling stressed and clearly calms her. I always make sure she has something to chew on if there will be exposure to potential triggers. Conventional wisdom says that the ability to remain calm is a character trait that most of us lack, but Neuroscience teaches us that remaining calm under pressure is not an inborn trait, but a skill that anybody can learn and I believe this can apply to our dogs as well.
