With clear aligners there are no food restrictions to be wary of this Halloween, meaning you can eat whatever chewy, crunchy, gummy, sticky candies you love the most. But.....you must be diligent about cleaning your teeth before popping the aligners back into place. If you are not careful you can actually be ...trapping your tooth enamel in tight space with sugar and bacteria which in effect is an invitation for tooth decay. Another thing to be mindful of is not to be sneaky! One little piece of candy won’t hurt, right? Wrong! Clear aligners are not meant to be in your mouth when you’re eating. The pressure from chewing with your aligners in place could cause them to crack. We look at practical ways to prevent fears of the dentist and dental anxiety in... kids With extreme dental anxiety affecting one in ten children, and more than half of all Australian six-year-olds presenting evidence of tooth decay in their baby or adult teeth, educating children from a young age about the importance of maintaining good oral health is essential. Between 60-90% of schoolchildren present issues of tooth decay, with severe periodontitis and untreated decay leading to pain and discomfort. Dental Health Week runs from the 3rd -10th August and its an opportune time to educate parents on how to prevent dental anxiety in their kids. Dr. Padma Gadiyar, a dentist, healthcare consultant, and technology innovator, shares her top five tips on how to eliminate fears of the dentist and dental anxiety from a young age: Take your child for regular dental check-ups, not just when a problem arises: According to a study undertaken in 2019, 68% of children aged 510 are more likely to visit due to a dental problem, not for a regular check-up. The more regularly your child visits the dentist, the more comfortable they become with the process as they build trust with their dentist are more likely to have positive experiences due to fewer complications with their teeth. The longer you leave between appointments, the higher chance your child has of developing issues such as cavities which requires procedures that can lead to dental anxiety. 09.01.2022 With all the haunted houses, creepy costumes, and sugary treats, it can be easy to forget that your QST braces require special attention this Halloween. Follow our easy tips to avoid problems with your QST braces, and make the most of your haunted Halloween! Avoid sticky candies such as caramel, gummies, and taffy that can stick to the brackets and wires, and pull them right off your teeth.... Don't eat hard candy like lollipops or jaw breakers. As their name indicates, they can easily knock one of your braces off or loosen a wire and sucking on a hard candy over an extended time means that your teeth are exposed to sugar for longer. Stick to softer easy-to-chew candy in bite-sized pieces. Limit your overall candy intake, too much can lead to greater chances of tooth decay. To keep your mouth cleaner throughout the day, drink water regularly. If you are eating more candy, more sugar is getting stuck in and around your braces, so be sure to brush your teeth more frequently. If your brackets or wires are moved around or knocked off, be sure to contact your Dentist immediately so that they can fix any damage and get your treatment back on track. Happy Halloween week!
