25.01.2022 Are you in Quirindi tomorrow, well the Men’s Heath Educational Rotary Van will be. The van will be situated in the Main Street. Who Is mherv!? The Men’s Heath Education Rotary Van is a Rotary project made possible by fundraising, generous sponsorships and time freely given by hundreds of Rotary volunteers.... A custom built caravan with a dedicated Registered Nurse travels the state of New South Wales offering free health screenings to regional and rural men, who are notorious for being completely in the dark about the state of their health. For most, there is no culture to see their doctor for a regular check-up, indeed it could be said that many men are afraid to do so in case they are told something they wouldn’t like to hear Consequently conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar which have little or no apparent symptoms, can build up and lead to sudden unexpected death or long term incapacity. Ten minutes spent in the mherv van can only bring good news Either the tests show no reason for concern or at the other end of the scale it may be recommended that immediate medical attention be sought for treatment that would bring the condition under control probably saving a life! This is a free service provided by Rotary.

23.01.2022 OUTREDS (Outback Rotary Education Scholarships) Ian Lobsey, President of Quirindi Rotary Club, is thrilled to announce that the Initial Recipient of the OUTREDS... Scholarship, for 2020, is Marika Forsstrom of Wallabadah. Marika is an Enrolled Nurse at Quirindi Hospital and is currently studying at the University of New England in the Bachelor of Nursing Course. At the completion of her Degree Marika intends to continue nursing at Quirindi Hospital as a Registered Nurse and, hopefully, at some time in the future concentrate on nursing in Palliative Care. I love nursing and enjoy helping and caring for people said Marika, and I am thrilled and grateful to receive the OUTREDS Scholarship, as it will enable me to complete my studies and continue providing care and support to the Quirindi community through my nursing career. I am so grateful to Concord Rotary Club, the Trustees of the Scholarship and Quirindi Rotary Club, for their support with my studies. The Scholarship, known as OUTREDS (Outback Rotary Education Scholarships), was established in the late 2000’s and has been operated by the Rotary Club of Concord as a Community Project. The Scholarship aims to assist communities by supporting those recipients completing Tertiary courses by returning and benefiting their own communities. The OUTREDS Scholarship grants the recipient up to $6,000.00 per year for a three-year period to assist with out of pocket expenses incurred as a result of their studies. Mr Lobsey expressed his gratitude to Concord Rotary Club and the Trustees of the Scholarship for their support of the Quirindi community. Marika will be a worthy recipient of the Scholarship and was selected from a very talented and professional group of applicants for this year’s Scholarship, said Mr Lobsey. Marika, who attended Quirindi High School, demonstrates the talent and aptitude of local residents and it is wonderful that, through the generosity of Concord Rotary Club and the Trustees of the Scholarship, we are able to support local residents in furthering their own skills and ultimately developing the resilience and talent of the Quirindi community.

23.01.2022 MR WORLEY PRESENTS TO ROTARY The world of school now looks very different The world as we knew it came to grinding halt last term due to the COVID-19 pandemic ...and, astoundingly in only four days, the entire education system re-adjusted to a new way of delivering educational excellence to students without face-to-face interaction. Principal, Ian Worley of Quirindi High School who presented with members from Quirindi Rotary via zoom last week - said it has been one of the most dramatic and logistically stressful times in his education career. There were/are, access to technology and connectivity issues for some of our students, which, we mediated, thanks to a generous grant from Rural Aids ‘Gift of Music’ and government assistance, which saw Quirindi High School receive delivery of number of laptops. With a massive logistical effort on behalf of the school, these laptops were distributed to those students who required one. There continue to be issues around connectivity in regards to internet service outside the school and we have worked with these students by supplying memory sticks and other forms of support to ensure equity in learning excellence, said Principal Worley. Students have told us that they really enjoy attending school full time, and they miss the consistent face-to-face teaching, the structure, the social interaction and the environment and that they want to be back here, said Principal Worley, who continued, teachers and school staff are also missing the format of former teaching. One interesting opportunity ‘online learning from home’ has offered students and teachers is the swift transition to the adoption and implementation of different forms of technology as a delivery and interaction platform including podcasts - and many aspects around lesson design technology is here to stay. This has been an extraordinary and exceptionally difficult transition for staff, students, their parents and carers and Principal Worley said as part of the phased return to school Quirindi High School has organised its rosters so students can attend one day per week for weeks 3+4. As outstanding educators, Quirindi High School staff understand what it is to be an online learner and how best to teach for this situation. They have collaborated with other teachers in the sharing of ideas, observations and tips, and they have gone above and beyond to deliver the best possible outcomes for all students. Mr Worley continued, as a school community We acknowledge that the world is going through a difficult - though temporary - period and schooling does not look the same. We as educators have unique skills and expertise and the world is realising how vital and important these are. The Principal continued Our students have really shown persistence and self-regulation in being the independent learners we have encouraged them to be and our school community has supported us through this time of transition. As the high standard and level of learning outcomes continues, even through these trying times, the school is focussed on offering the best opportunities to every student. We have implemented numerous checks and balances, plus individual support and advice systems from phone calls and zoom meetings, to google classroom and hard copy print outs, social media and media updates and more - to support out students through this time. We are following government directives and tailoring every situation to the betterment of every student, said Mr Worley, who thanked the wider community and community groups and organisations for their continued support of the school.

22.01.2022 FAREWELL PAULIN After an amazing 12 months at QHS, Paulin Bogerman, is heading home to France on Sunday. The effervescent young man who hopes to become a pil...ot - arrived with very little English but great excitement in July 2019 courtesy of a Rotary International Youth Exchange. My time on exchange, will stay one of the best years of my life, said the popular year 11 student. I’ve learnt so much and seen so many things, like the amazing agriculture in Australia through visiting farms across the region. I have also been to Lightning Ridge which was really interesting and so very different to what I was used to seeing both in Australia or back in France. Paulin continued he has met many people that he will never forget like his host families, the Robertsons’, the Straneys’ and the Greens’. I have so many great memories, including my first Christmas with 35*c and Rob and Jenny Lewis with who I have been on holidays with in Iluka where I paddled with dolphins. I have also met some friends that I will never forget. The Frenchman, said there is a big difference between the people in France and in Australia. The people are a lot friendlier here. Sadly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Paulin was prevented from doing a trip around the country in his last few months in the country. I’ve seen only a small part of Australia, but, it’s been amazing, so I am really excited to come back later and to visit a bigger part of Australia. He has most certainly achieved his goal of learning English as he is now fluent in English and able to hold strong discussions with someone without having too many issues. It feels so good to understand everyone, to watch mini-series and to listen to podcasts in English and understand them. I would like to thank the Quirindi Rotary Club and the Robertson, Straney and Green families who have hosted me for this year, said Paulin who lists his favourite Australian food as the ‘Cob Loaf’ because it is a simple and good to share. I found it so good that you can call everyone mate here. It is something that we don’t have in France. This word shows again that the people in Australia are very down to earth and friendly. Best wishes to you Paulin, thank you for the joy and friendliness you have shared with so many of us at QHS. Have a safe trip home and we look forward to seeing you again one day in the future.

15.01.2022 One of the many wonderful educational events that Quirindi Rotary support is the National Youth Science Forum. This year two students from Quirindi High School were successful in their applications. Thomas Boorer and Mark Batterham, they both attended out last meeting and gave a speech regarding their application. Mr Peter Roberts Science teacher at Quirindi High School also attended the meeting, showing support of these two students and of the NYSF. Attached is a copy of th...e transcript of the speech these boys delivered at our recent meeting. Congratulations to both of these boys, and we wish them all the best with a very exciting future. The boys delivered their speech at the Rotary annual Polio Eradication Silly Hat Night, that is why they are wearing their stylish hats. 14.01.2022 Here's a little update from Josie in Denmark!

14.01.2022 NEW FORMAT FOR THE JOAN CARPENTER AWARDS The Joan Carpenter Music Scholarships Awards are on again this year, on Sunday 20 June, commencing at 2.00 pm, at Quirindi High School Hall. The Scholarships provide the opportunity for young musicians in the Liverpool Plains Shire to perform in front of a live audience and also win financial support for the development of their future music skills. The Scholarships commenced in 1992 by Quirindi Rotary club, as a way of recognising th...e outstanding musical contribution made to the district by the late Joan Carpenter, as well as opening a new forum for youth development in the district. In 1999 the competition was converted to an open concert creating an opportunity for the youth of the district to display their talents in front of an audience, and in turn develop their confidence for future presentations. This meant that the competitors who did not win a prize, still gained from the experience with many returning to subsequent competitions and winning. This concept has proven to be very successful with some winners going on to further their careers in music and even become teachers themselves. A past winner of the Joan Carpenter Award, pianist Carter Smyth is still very much involved with his music, teaching many students all over Newcastle, where he now resides. After leaving school in Quirindi, Carter Smyth, studied at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music. Another previous winner is Hannah Caterer who has continued with her music as well as teaching students the art of piano playing. Many others have also continued to develop their music career and make significant contribution to their industry, as well as their local communities. The musical afternoon is organized annually by the local Quirindi Rotary Club and is supported by the local Farming for Kids group. Any students wishing to be part of the event are asked to phone 67462064 for an application form. Application Forms are also available on Quirindi Rotary Club’s Facebook site, at https://www.facebook.com/QuirindiRotary. The 2021 Joan Carpenter Award will again include separate categories for musical instruments, vocalists and school musical groups. This will result in a total of eight categories for students to compete in. There will be separate sections for voice and musical instruments but still retain the three age sections. The judges will select three prize winners from each group, then select the best three performers from the afternoon to play off in a final, from which the judges will select this years Joan Carpenter Awardee. https://www.visitliverpoolplains.com.au//joan-carpenter-aw

13.01.2022 At Mondays Rotary meeting we had two special guest. Richard Anderson our very own local Author and the newest local Upper Hunter member David Layzell. Mr Layzell was in Quirindi to meet and greet the local people within the community. So since it was Rotary’s Dinner Meeting Rob Lewis and Gordon Health decided to bring him along to dinner. Was interesting listening to Mr Layzell talk about his journey during the election. During the campaign he did not know if he would win b...ut he thought he would do everything within him to get the win. He was determined that he would not look back in 20 years and think I should have done it differently, I would be able to look back and say I did my best. I think that is a way that we should all go into any challenge, give it your best and you can do no more. Mr Layzell spoke about his commitment to the party and to the people who voted for him. But he also talked about how he want to change the view of people who did not actually vote for him. He wants people to see who he is and what he stands for. Was very interesting listening to his journey into the political world. Congratulations on your Win Mr Layzell we as a community club are looking forward to working with you. Our other special guest for the night was Richard Anderson, Richard talked about his journey as an Author in a small rural area of Australia. Richard did a journalism degree in Bathurst back in the ‘80s (with Chris Hammer, Amanda Keller and Andrew Denton) but has been a farmer in northern NSW for close on 30 years. He is married to Sue, and they have two adult children, Issie and Matt, who both work in the city. Richard always told himself, that when he got time, he would write a novel but it wasn’t until he was in his 50s that he completed and self-published his first novel Spon Com Vermillion. Richard’s first traditionally published novel was The Good Teacher back in 2017 which came out through HQ at Harlequin. Richard stated that the Good Teacher was no reference to any school or teachers that he knows. Although some of our members were sure they knew who each character was. Thank you to both of our special guest, the night was a fun night full of laughter. Rotary Club Quirindi like to thank all of our great guest that we have over the year. They all bring their own story to the meeting and we as a committee find out we have so many wonderful people living right here in our community. Thank you to the partners that also joined the meeting plus our other special guests Mr Ian Carter and Mrs Marilyn Carter. We just might get Mr & Mrs Carter to join us another night to talk about the great community project they are involved in Farming for Kids. This community is full of so many wonderful people that do so much for our area.

11.01.2022 Sunday night saw the Rotary Club of Quirindi have their Christmas Party. Although it is such a busy time of year it is always good to get as many committee members together to have a casual get together to celebrate what has happened over the past year. Although COVID-19 has slowed everything down for 2020 it was great to see so many happy faces attend the evening. Thank you Alice for organizing the event.

09.01.2022 Scholarship Opportunity Through Rotary. President of Quirindi Rotary Club, Mr Ian Lobsey, is excited to announce that Scholarships are being offered to post-secondary school aged, members of country communities to obtain tertiary education and training in disciplines which will in turn benefit the local community on their return. The Rotary Club of Concord, through the Rotary Club of Quirindi, has a scholarship available for an appropriate applicant for the next three years o...f $6,000.00 per year or $500 per month. The recipient of the scholarship must express a desire to return and work in the local community. With the current effect of the drought, there may be many families and communities that require such support to continue the services the town/s require. Without limiting the scope of scholarship applications, the following areas of local needs have been targeted: Health Care, Education, Other community infrastructure e.g. local government, Agricultural and farming expertise, and Trades. Applicants need not necessarily be a recent school leaver but in the age bracket 18 to 50, when commencing the course. However, this is only a guideline. Further details regarding the scholarship, together with an application form, may be obtained by contacting Robert Lewis on 0447627695 or [email protected]; Applications must be submitted by Monday 30 March 2020. We check weighed the load and found we were 8oo kgs overweight, so we had to remove one bale of lucerne silage before Martin left last night with 25 tonnes of goods for the Bega Valley.
