17.01.2022 Great ancestor stories don't just happen! I put in a lot of research time to bring out the best for each character. My reading is targeted however, to specific events in history relating to that person's experiences. Up soon on the blog will be my Irish convict ancestor's interactions with the Sydney people, the story of how my ancestors came to reside in Coonamble and how the Pilliga forest helped my ancestors during the Great Depression. ... There is always an abundance of interesting stories in every family. What are some you have discovered? #ancestorlove #thepeoplewhomademe #familyhistory #imarocketlady #quirkycharacters

09.01.2022 This week’s Sunday Storytelling is the sad tale of my 3 x great grandfather, William Bennett. In little more than 15 years in Australia, he made his fortune and was riding a wave of success with running the Jindera Mill Hotel in 1884 when he was accused of horse-stealing. What William did next would alter the course of his family’s life. Did something in William’s past cause him to act out of character? And what ever did happen to the thousand pounds that his widow collecte...d upon his death? We certainly never saw any of it in our branch of the family! William’s daughter Emma would marry an Andriske and end up far away in another small community, Coonamble, where some of William’s descendants still live today. I’ve taken a special interest in William and his wife Anna’s story because I live just a 20 minute drive from where they made their home in Jindera, near Albury, NSW. I had no idea the depth of history our family had in this small village when I first visited a few years back. I’ve often travelled to or lived somewhere, only to find out later on that I had a connection with that place. We just never know where our ancestor’s feet have touched the ground until we take the time to sit with them a while. Where has your ancestor research taken you? Check out William’s story here: https://quirkycharacters.com.au//accusations-and-arsenic-/

01.01.2022 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and so I’ve chosen to tell the story of my beautiful friend Melody in this week’s Sunday Storytelling. She passed away three years ago at the age of 47. She was a wonderful friend to me and the best travelling companion I’ve ever had. In her honour this year, I’ve made a donation to the Breast Cancer Trials group, an organisation close to my heart. I worked in Oncology Cancer Trials for eight years and know the important work that... is being done in cancer research. Breast cancer has hit close to home for me more than once. My mum is a survivor and two close friends of mine from high school were also diagnosed in their 30s and 40s, one losing her life at age 41. The statistics tell us that we are losing the battle with 9% of breast cancer patients and the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s mission is to bring survivorship up to 100% by 2030. So, I’ve listed below some charities you can donate to. Every little bit helps. Every year we get closer to keeping those we love the most and not losing them to this cruel disease. If you know of other worthy breast cancer charities, please pop the links in the comments. And remember to check your boobies! National Breast Cancer Foundation https://nbcf.org.au/ McGrath Foundation https://www.mcgrathfoundation.com.au/ Love your sister https://www.loveyoursister.org/ Breast Cancer Trials https://www.breastcancertrials.org.au/home I would also love to give a shout out to a small business called Love Your Warrior who make the most beautiful and practical gift boxes for breast cancer warriors. Check them out here: https://www.loveyourwarrior.com.au/ The link to The sweetest Melody, the story of me and my travel buddy, living our best young lives, can be found here: https://quirkycharacters.com.au/stories/the-sweetest-melody/
