24.01.2022 "My name is Haymen and I am currently studying a Bachelor of Paramedic Science. I first heard about QUT Big Lift when I was looking for clubs that allowed me to volunteer so I signed up during orientation week. I went on my first Big Lift trip this year at the end of semester one (mid-year trip, 2019). My favourite moments of the trip were learning more about the stories of these rural communities and how our volunteering in these communities made an impact. For example, we h...elp make giant lanterns for Dalbys Lantern Festival which would typically would have taken months to have complete the lantern making portion. However, with the help of Big Lift we were able to smash this out over two days. Furthermore, other favourite moments of the trip is the absolute quality banter you have with the people that come on these trips. The diversity of the Big Lift volunteers such as age, study backgrounds, interests and views allow for interesting, engaging and invigorating conversation on the long trips between towns and during our time volunteering. My time on the first Big Lift trip was an incredible experience to which we began as strangers at the beginning of the trip and by the end of it, I felt like I knew everyone quite well, some I am still friends with now. If youre on the fence about coming along, I urge you to step out of your comfort zone, join one of the Big Lift trips and gain a unique experience!" If your keen on jump on board for our next trip, applications close In 5 days!!! Apply here: https://forms.gle/2x6dNAPRHPoADXZs7

16.01.2022 Over the coming weeks, well be posting some short exec bios to introduce our team and share some knowledge about Big Lift. Our first bio comes from the Big Lift president, Matthew Lowe. You can also see the bios on our Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/p/CEB1aeeF12d/ "Hi, my name is Matthew and Im the current president of Big Lift. Big Lift is a student club at QUT that gives to small, rural communities such as Cherbourg and Eidsvold through the practice of needs-ba...sed volunteering." Essentially, we ask these communities what they need help with. This way we can bring about a larger positive impact, ensuring that the work we do doesnt leave more work for them once we leave." "Often these are simple tasks that the community members simply dont have time for. Like taking care of school sheds, basic gardening and other activities." "Its a really engaging learning experience where we explore and learn more about rural life, the challenges theyre facing as well as their successes and the amazing reasons they choose to live out there." "My job is to make sure things run smoothly and to create a fun environment for the team to put forward new ideas." "This year, weve been looking at different ways to connect with communities both inside and outside of Big Lift." "Weve faced some big challenges in recent times. The past two years, weve had struggles with bushfires interfering with our trips." "Also, given the COVID-19 situation, were really hoping to have ways we can engage with rural communities still, and possibly help out in a different way than we normally would." "Our exec team is definitely working hard behind the scenes to make sure all our insurance is in check and we have contingencies for the end of year trip." "So well continue to aim to make a positive impact on these communities while also bringing a unique learning experience to students."

15.01.2022 In "Valiant" (2007) by Jackie Kurltjunyintja Giles, he depicts the epic journey of an ancestral kangaroo on a car bonnet. The designs of his maze-like paintings relate to ceremony, and especially to rainwater filling the channels in the lakes region on the edge of the Gibson Desert. (QAGOMA) Come see this artwork and many more on Saturday! Details here: https://www.facebook.com/events/305246917595746/ (and please remember to fill out the google form for our COVID-SAFE plan. Thank you!)

15.01.2022 Hi everyone, hope youre having a great uni break! Big Lift is emerging from its COVID-fuelled hiatus to plan engaging and interesting events for the coming semester. Our exec team has regrouped and weve been busy behind the scenes laying groundwork for upcoming trips and opportunities. While the adversity and uncertainty presented by bushfires and pandemics may remain, well do our best to find solutions and alternatives. Well be hosting an online O-Week presentation on Mo...nday at 3.30pm on our YouTube page to share our vision for the club and answer any questions you might have. Thanks for your patience. We hope to bring Big Lift back to form and continue spreading our values of service learning, rural engagement and Indigenous solidarity going forwards in 2020. See you there!

13.01.2022 The first town we'll visit on this year's Mid Year Trip is the Aboriginal community of Cherbourg. The town was established in 1904 to house the Aboriginal people that were forcibly removed from their homes and communities in northern New South Wales and Queensland. Originally named Barambah, its name was changed to Cherbourg after a nearby cattle station of the same name kept getting its mail mixed up. Big Lift has been helping out in Cherbourg for years, helping at their Reconciliation Fun Run in a smaller trip and helping out community members during longer trips. If you'd like to visit Cherbourg with us and spend time helping out the people living there, keep an eye on our page for our Mid Year Trip application form that we will make available soon.

13.01.2022 Were live! Ask us any questions you might have in our YouTube chat :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mF9xfmJMYM

In fact, this year's turnout was Goondiwindi's biggest annual Show in history! Keep your ears peeled - later this week we'll put out more info about our upcoming mid-year trip (it'll be during the next uni break after exams etc). Hope to see you there!

11.01.2022 Happy New Year to our QUT Big Lift family!! Sadly it hasnt been a very happy start for many families or wildlife in regional areas across Australia. Our friends at QUT Red Cross have started a fund to The Trustee for NSW Rural Fire Service & Brigades. Please show your support by donating... even the smallest amount counts! We hope everyone is staying safe at this time, our thoughts are with those who have been affected.

10.01.2022 "Hey there! My name is Marcus van Egmond, Im a 3rd year Bach of IT/Bach of Maths student. In university you pretty much always find that people who help out or get involved in one activity or club, end up being a part of many more groups. The biggest issue is making that first step. I was introduced to Big Lift by a close friend, and honestly, I just joined because they told me to, I wasnt overly sure as to what I was getting into. My first experience was volunteering at th...e Cherbourg Reconciliation fun run, and I headed into it thinking Oh ill just hang out with my friend and do some cool things. I didnt realise that I would meet some of the most warm and welcoming people that Ive ever had the privilege to call friends. Whether it be the bonding with them whilst volunteering, the late night card games, the absolute random stuff that we somehow get up to (Rachael and Kira, you know what Im talking about), or just the ability of being able to put your mind on pause from everything that is happening in your life, and contribute to something that might not seem so important to you at the time, but definitely hits you hard afterwards. (Note running a fun run after having cereal for breakfast also hits you hard, more so in the stomach) A few months later, and Im honoured to continuously run into these people daily around uni and just be surrounded by so many people that are just outwardly caring all the time, and just radiate calm and good times. If you havent joined a university club before, I cant think of a better group of people to start your university club life with, or perhaps you are wanting to add to your belt, where I cant think of any other cause that comes close to the impact that Big Lift makes. Not only will you adore the memories you make, but you also give to others a massive amount just for taking the time out of your day to help regional communities do what they do best and foster a culture of learning and giving, just by being you" Only one day till applications for the End of Year trip close! I repeat 1 day left jump on board! Apply here: https://forms.gle/2x6dNAPRHPoADXZs7

07.01.2022 "My name is Camille and I am undertaking a double degree of Law and Science (Majoring in Biology). I got involved with Big Lift in my first year at QUT. Upon attending O-week, I was thrilled to come across a BigLifter who informed me of the diverse volunteering opportunities available. I immediately signed up to be a member! Through QUT Big Lift, I have the opportunity to volunteer at the Balaangala Indigenous Community gardens. By bringing the community together and maintain...ing the gardens, the Balaangala Community Group brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians; a core value Big Lift shares! Most recently, I had the pleasure of going on the 2019 mid-year trip. This was an amazing opportunity for me to discover rural Queensland for the very first time. Through volunteering, we were able to engage with and learn from members of these communities to better understand the issues they are facing. Not only was I blessed to make a difference in peoples lives, I came home with 28 new QUT friends!" If your keen on jump on board for our next trip, applications close soon! Apply here: https://forms.gle/2x6dNAPRHPoADXZs7

07.01.2022 "Im Brenna and Im nearing the end of my double degree of Law and Psychology. I first signed up to QUT Big Lift in my first year of study during orientation week, but I slept on getting involved until an email popped into my inbox this year advertising the adventure of the 2019 mid-year trip! Big Lift, for me, is the ultimate combination of needs-based volunteering work, rural engagement and personal development, not possible without a huge respect for the community members ...and way of life that we engage with on our trips. I gained such a diversified perspective on certain social issues from learning about the experiences of rural communities firsthand, which occasionally challenged my personal beliefs, but more so inspired me to continue engaging in charitable initiatives from seeing the tangible outcomes of our service. Most importantly, from starting the trip with a group of strangers, I could never have foreseen how quickly I wouldve gained 28 new friends! Sharing such an intense experience with a diverse bunch of legends makes for a true sense of teamwork, friendships unlike others and mad chats. Big Lift might seem to be out of your comfort zone, but give it a whirl and experience the unique opportunity for yourself!" With just 2 days till applications for the End of Year trip close make sure you filled it in! Apply here: https://forms.gle/2x6dNAPRHPoADXZs7

05.01.2022 Yeah Buddy to our Big Lift volunteers for helping out at the Blackbutt Avocado Festival this weekend!! #qutlife Huge thank you to the Blackbutt Community! We cant be more grateful for such an amazing opportunity! We hope to see you next year! :D

04.01.2022 Alex Vosten - Masters of Computational Biology "I am faced with a task - write 300 words on how cool Big Lift is. The benefits and joys of this amazing student-run charity can only be expressed as a 7 day saga of oxytocin highs... but Ill try. I heard about Big Lift through a friend. I was naive back then (and still am in many different ways) - and my only goal through university was to beef up that sweet, sweet resume. Big Lift - a charity engaging with regional communiti...es and a focus on respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities - looked like my ticket. I jumped on board and within two days my worldview had changed. Every narcissistic ideology, every narrow opinion and every lapse into the welcoming arms of a lazy philosophy was exposed. Through service learning and needs based volunteering with a cohort of truly inspiring people - I wanted to change. Change for the better. Two years on and I think I am on a much better path. I eat healthier, I time manage, I engage in social issues and I am more than a little less depressed. There isnt a shadow of a doubt that this was all Big Lifts doing. I have a social network, I have realistic future goals and I have a life. Big lift changed me for the better. So Im now the President of this motley crew, and I am so excited to jump back on this bus on the 22nd of November and learn some more! Were volunteering in Murgon, Cherbourg, Eidsvold, Agnes Water, Bundaberg and a few in the Banana Shire!!! So if you want to change yourself - come join me on the End of Year Trip and look forward to growing in ways I cant explain in just 300 words." Applications for the end of year trip close in just 4 days! Woah! Apply here: https://forms.gle/2x6dNAPRHPoADXZs7
