20.01.2022 We are absolutely heartbroken after learning about Peter’s passing on Saturday. Since joining the club at the start of 2020, he was quickly established as one of the happiest, bubbliest, most positive people that any of us had the fortune to be around. Words cannot describe Pete’s uniqueness. He had a way of making an impact on people quickly and deeply. He was very well loved and respected. This was emphasised when he was elected to be one of our club executives this year. P...eter flourished in his position as one of the Social Coordinators. On top of that, he was an extremely strong climber, crushing hard on everything he attempted. We are absolutely shocked and devastated that climbing ended his life so suddenly and unexpectedly. Especially since it is something that brought him so much joy and is such an important part of all of our lives. This is a time for our club and the wider climbing community to come together and support each other, and pay tribute to the wonderful person he was. QUT counselling service has provided some information and resources to help us deal with our grief: Although each person’s experience is different, there are a number of common responses that may be experienced by people dealing with grief/loss or traumatic stress. For example, sleep or eating disturbances; sadness; feeling overwhelmed; anger, helplessness; fear; confusion; difficulty with concentration or making decisions; loss of interest in normal activities, etc. Even though these feelings may be unpleasant, it can be reassuring to know that they are normal responses to abnormal events, and for most people they subside over time. What can help: Talk to family, friends or others who you know and are comfortable with or a professional counsellor if you feel this would be of assistance or if your feelings are very intense or prolonged. Get plenty of rest. Get some exercise, even if it’s simply walking. Maintain your usual schedule as much as possible. Don’t make any major life decisions. Eat balanced meals regularly and avoid drugs and alcohol. Take slow deep breaths, concentrating on the lower part of your chest (abdominal or diaphragmatic breathing). It is often difficult for those who were not involved to understand what you might be going through. You may wish to show this information to family and friends and perhaps discuss your reactions with them.
