24.01.2022 Delighted to share that the QUT Design Lab is partnering with Clinical Excellence Queensland to better integrate design thinking and design doing into healthcare across Queensland, as part of the Bridge Labs project ... watch this space, we expect there will be opportunities for many lab members to engage! Extract from Deputy Director General, Clinical Excellence Queensland recent message to the Division: "CEQ has a long history of leading from the front to ensure Queensla...nders receive clinical care that is timely, efficient and of the highest quality and safety. To support hospitals and health services in these challenging times, we are pursuing three innovative collaborations with local academic partners across the design ( QUT Design Lab), human factors science (Centre for Human Factors and Socio-technical Systems, University of the Sunshine Coast) and safety innovation (Safety Science Innovation Lab, Griffith University) specialties. These virtual bridge labs build upon ongoing collaboration with these groups and have been created to unlock immediate operational benefits to the health system over the next twelve months. These linkages will: - enable health services and our clinical networks to access world-leading advisory support (at no cost) in their efforts to tackle complex challenges. - support service improvement and system change projects (especially those addressing shifts brought about by COVID-19 and aligned to the Departments priority areas) - by matching projects with expert mentors and providing project design support. - accelerate the development and release of new learning programs and expert-led workshops to support frontline staff and system leaders to enhance capabilities to drive healthcare improvement in the new normal. Strong partnership and collaboration have been the key to responding effectively to the pandemic here in Queensland and globally. Leveraging the vast capabilities within Queensland universities will be equally critical in our efforts to maintain a safe, sustainable and effective health system." Dr Jillann Farmer, Deputy Director General, Clinical Excellence Queensland

15.01.2022 Amazing QUT Design Lab researchers & their teams doing amazing things!

14.01.2022 Saddened to hear this morning of the passing of qualitative guru, Professor Emerita of Sociology Kathy Charmaz - in a career highlight, Prof Evonne Miller organized to bring Kathy to QUT in 2017 to run a week of qualitative workshops - Kathy was so kind, so patient, so inspiring, so insightful.. it was such a wonderful week of learning and growing as researchers, as we learned from the grounded theory guru. She will be missed - but her voice and methods lives on in her books and her students: us. Rest in power, Kathy. #kathycharmaz

14.01.2022 We are delighted to announce that Anna Svensdotter will be joining us to speak about marginalisation and spatial justice in urban public places. Anna is a PhD c...andidate at QUT, sessional lecturer at University of Queensland, University of Sunshine Coast, and QUT. Her PhD explored the socio-spatial borders of public place in Brisbane. Anna holds a Masters degree in Architecture and has been engaged in several research projects focused on public engagement and the inclusion of marginalised populations. Anna teaches design at undergraduate and postgraduate levels across three universities in the Brisbane area. Her ongoing research interest include people-place experiences, marginalised publics, public engagement, and design of urban public place. Join Anna as she unpacks the challenges of spatially just urban publics before exploring the structural affordance of transiency in the conception of spatially just public place.

13.01.2022 Given the events of this summer, we are particularly excited to introduce Liz Brogden who will speak on designing in resilience and designing out disaster Liz i...s a Lecturer in Transdisciplinary Design and Architecture in the QUT Design Lab at Queensland University of Technology. Her research explores various points of overlap between disaster theory, design theory, architecture and transformative pedagogy. Lizs philosophy is informed by a determinedly optimistic framing of wicked problems through the use of design methodologies. Through this approach, she seeks to increase and sustain engagement and bring about transformative change through education. In this short talk, Liz will discuss the notion that disasters are, in fact, not natural. Despite its popular use, the term natural disaster is problematic in that it denies recognition of the in-built vulnerabilities to natural hazards that are often man-made. In the same way that we create vulnerability to hazards through the ways we design our cities, we can also design for disaster resilience. Conceiving disaster risk in this way empowers communities and decision-makers to understand that through resilient design we can design disaster out. The idea of design is expanded and framed as intrinsic to being human. This understanding empowers every member of a community to see themselves as co-creators of the world and our future through our daily choices.
