20.01.2022 Why is a skin check so important? Is it still important to book in for a skin check? Yes! Two out of three Australians are diagnosed with some form of skin cancer each year, making Australian statistics one of the highest in the world. 19.01.2022 What is a sun tan? A tan is much more than skin turning brown. When skin is exposed to UV radiation, the top layer of your skin produces a pigment called melanin. Melanin gives skin its colour and works to protect the cells by absorbing ultraviolet (UV) radiation. In other words, a tan - even a light tan - is a sign that your skin has been damaged by UV radiation. This eventually causes loss of elasticity (wrinkles), sagging, yellowish discolouration and even brown patches to appear on your skin. Worst of all, it increases your risk of skin cancer. Therefore, despite the misguided belief that a tan looks healthy, there is no such thing as a safe or healthy tan. Be smart about looking after your skin!

19.01.2022 Qutis will be closed on Friday 5th July and will re open at 8.00am Monday 8th July. We apologise for any inconvenience. For any urgent matters please contact Myers Family Medical Practice on 5229 5192. Thank you.

19.01.2022 Which skin type are you? Why do some people get sunburnt easier than others? Your skin type is the reason why! Type 1:... -Very fair, pale and white skin & often freckled; light coloured or red hair. -Most sensitive to UV light & extremely high tendency to burn. -Skin never tans, only burns. -Greatest risk of developing skin cancer. Skin care required: Never leave the house without the highest grade of sun protection. Type 1 skin is likely to burn within minutes of sun exposure. Type 2: -Fair, white skin & prone to freckles; light coloured or red hair. -Very sensitive to the sun & burns easily -Unprotected sun exposure will result in only a minimal tan. -Very high risk of developing skin cancer. Skin care required: Never allow skin to be exposed to the sun without the highest sun protection. Type 3: -Light brown skin, hair is usually light brown to brown. -Skin is still sensitive to UV light; skin tans and burns moderately -High risk of developing skin cancer. Skin Care required: Always wear a very high form of sun protection when skin is exposed to the sun. Although skin will not burn immediately, even a few minutes in the sun will make changes to the skins structure. Type 4: -Moderately brown skin, dark hair -Less sensitive to UV light; skin burns minimally & tans very easily. -Medium level risk of developing skin cancer. Skin care required: Skin is not as likely to burn in direct sunlight, but sun screen & other sun protection must be used if spending a moderate amount of time in the sun. Type 5: -Dark brown skin; brown or black hair. -High proportion of dark pigments in type 5 skin makes it only minimally sensitive to UV radiation. -These skin types rarely burn. -Skin cancer is less common in people with skin type 5 Skin Care required: This type of skin can still burn. Choose an appropriate type of sun protection. Type 6: -Deeply pigmented skin that is dark brown or black; black hair -Minimal sensitivity to UV light -Skin never burns. -Skin cancer is less common with skin type 6. However, if a skin cancer develops it might be detected later. Therefore, people with skin type 6 also need to beware of this skin types reaction to sunlight. Skin Care required: Same as for skin type 5 - appropriate protection to prevent possible damage. Knowing your skin type will aid in the prevention of skin cancers and other skin - related issues. Make sure you check your skin often for any changes & see a doctor regularly for professional full body skin checks!

15.01.2022 Ultraviolet Rays - PART TWO: UVB What are UVB rays? -UVB rays are responsible for producing sunburn and play the greatest role in causing skin cancers. -UVB rays have a shorter wavelength than UVA rays. UVB penetrates and damages the outermost layers of your skin and directly damage DNA, producing genetic defects or mutations. -Overexposure of UVB rays cause suntan, sunburn and even blistering.... -Although the intensity of UVB rays fluctuates, skin can be damaged by UVB rays all year round, especially at high altitudes or on reflective surfaces like snow or ice. -UVB rays can be filtered by clouds and do not penetrate glass. 13.01.2022 What is the difference between a Full Body Skin Check & Body Mapping? A Full Body Skin Check is a visual analysis of your skin performed by a qualified doctor with the aim of preventing, detecting & managing precancerous skin damage and skin cancers of all types. Your doctor may also use a Dermatoscope a handheld instrument, a bit like a magnifying glass to more extensively evaluate any pigmented skin lesions you may have. A timely, thorough skin examination according to ...your risk will enable your doctor to detect most cancers early and minimize the treatments needed. Body Mapping (or Mole Mapping) is method using whole body photography to create a digital record for tracking subtle changes in moles that may develop over time. Using computer software and a visual review by a doctor, subsequent images can be compared to baseline (original photos taken) with any new or changed lesion being highlighted. Your doctor can then use a Dermatoscope to assess the highlighted moles to exclude melanoma results. Body mapping annually or every second year complement a full body skin check performed in between the mapping. During your initial full body skin check, your doctor will determine your suitability for Mole Mapping. 08.01.2022 ULTRAVIOLET RAYS - PART ONE: UVA What are UVA rays? - UVA rays are one of the two basic types of ultraviolet rays present in sunlight that reach the earths surface. - They have a longer wave-length and are associated with premature skin aging changes including wrinkle formation. - There are approximately 500 times more UVA rays in sunlight than UVB rays which also penetrate deeper into the skin. ... - UVA exposure plays a role in skin cancer formation & causes genetic damage the innermost part of your top layer of skin cells. The skin tries to prevent further damage from UVA rays by darkening, resulting in a tan. Shorter wave-lengths of UVA also cause sunburn. - UVA rays account for up to 95 percent of UV radiation reaching the earth and maintain the same level of strength during daylight hours throughout the year with the ability to penetrate windows and cloud cover. 07.01.2022 AUTUMN: Sunburn Risks & Protection Tips Though the temperature is cooler in autumn, sun exposure can still be high resulting in sunburn if youre not careful. 3 Autumn Sunburn Risks: 1.REFLECTION: UV exposure from reflective surfaces such as of water and can still affect your skin. ... 2. ALTITUDE: The higher up you are in altitude, the closer you are to the sun and the thinner the air is, both of which lead to over-exposure to harmful UV rays. 3. LACK OF OBVIOUS HEAT: Unlike warmer months, cooler weather may lead you to think you dont even need sun protection. Autumn Sun Protection Tips: Develop and exercise good sun protection habits. Seek the shade - especially between 10am and 4pm. Dont go to tanning booths. Cover your head & arms with high quality UPF 50+ broad-brimmed hats & clothing. Apply a SPF 50+ sunscreen to any exposed areas of your face, ears, nose, and neck & re-apply every 2 hours. Regularly examine your skin & see your doctor regularly for a professional skin examination See our website for some great info on choosing a good sunscreen!

06.01.2022 6 TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE BEST SUNGLASSES FOR UV PROTECTION: 1. Choose at least 99% UVA & UVB protection. This is the single most important thing to look for when buying sunglasses. 2. The bigger the better! Consider opting for wrap-around, close fitting or over-sized sunglasses. Wide lenses protect your eyes from every angle. 3. Darker doesnt mean more protection. Dark sunglasses may look cool, but the colour of the lenses and the level of darkness has nothing to do with the... sunglasses ability to block UV rays. 4. Lens colour amber, green or grey? Essentially, colour doesnt matter. They do not block out more sun, but may be useful for sports because lens colour can increase contrast. 5. Polarizing reduces glare, not UV protection. Polarization reduces glare which is great for activities like driving or being around reflective surfaces such as water, but does not provide UV protection. 6. Dont worry about the cost! Sunglasses dont have to cost a lot of money to work well. Cheaper sunglasses with 100% UVA & UVB protection can be just as effective as more expensive options. Besides types of cancers, UV exposure also contributes to the development of certain types of cataracts, growths on the eye and possibly macular degeneration. So make sure your sun protection routine includes your eyes! See more
