23.01.2022 Completing a degree takes years of dedication, hard work and perseverance. With that in mind, as part of National Reconciliation Week 2021, we’d like to share with you this powerful video of Wyatt, Darci, Joel and Tia as they reflect on their journey so far. These four alumni are members of the largest cohort of Indigenous students to ever graduate from the QUT School of Law with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) in the School’s history. ... We know that their now-completed journey at QUT is just the beginning of their success. In the Faculty of Business and Law, we acknowledge that reconciliation is not just about First Nations people completing tertiary education. Aligning with this year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, we too acknowledge that reconciliation is more than a word and is about taking action. We recognise the important role that we play in ensuring reconciliation is a part of our everyday business of learning, teaching, and researching. That we privilege Indigenous voices in conversations and do our part in closing the gap in educational and employment outcomes. Reconciliation is a journey for all Australians as individuals, families, communities, organisations and importantly as a nation. Thank you to Wyatt, Darci, Joel, and Tia for participating in this video and for choosing QUT. We would also like to thank Bianca Hill-Jarro who plays an integral role at the Faculty level for supporting QUT’s First Nations students studying law. #MoreThanAWord #NRW2021 #QUTLaw #StudyLaw QUT (Queensland University of Technology)

There is so much practical experience to be gained beyond clerkships and commercial law. Read more about Christjan’s internship here: https://bit.ly/2XlBkGB

18.01.2022 After two weeks studying legal design within the new Graduate Certificate in Future Law Technologies, Christopher Raleigh became passionate about communicating the law more creatively and started applying what he’d learned in the real world as Senior Legal Counsel at a FinTech start up. I redesigned the contracts at the FinTech start up I was working at. I also started delivering advice to the company in a way that embraces legal design thinking so it would be much easier fo...r all staff to understand and follow the advice. His advice to those considering the course, I would say jump on board or get left behind. Don’t be afraid to dive into this course head on because your professional career will benefit so quickly after you start. Like everything in life, you get out what you put in. If you’re motivated enough to put effort into this course you will be so pleasantly surprised what you get out of it. Executive Dean Professor Dan Hunter introduced the course earlier this year in response to the rapidly changing landscape of the legal industry through technology, globalisation and a shift in client expectations. 18.01.2022 In 2021 Reconciliation Week is about more than words, it’s about taking action. For Darci Perry, one of our recent #QUTLaw graduates she says, Indigenous culture is rooted in sharing knowledge and culture through the spoken word. The dreaming, our history, stories and knowledge of the land is all spoken rather than written. More than a word is the embodiment of the importance of the spoken word. Every Australian needs to be reminded that passive acceptance is not reconciliat...ion. It requires more than sentiment, it requires action. This action should be the spreading of Indigenous culture - it should be used to bring people together not to ostracize. That it is ignorance towards things which are unknown that is the root of all problems. 17.01.2022 Congratulations to the two #QUT teams who competed in the Baker McKenzie National Women's Moot. The tournament is the first established national moot in which all competitors must be female and is aimed at addressing the equity issues facing women at the Bar. The QUT teams were commended on their excellent written work and ability to engage with the bench, despite the tournament being hosted over zoom. QUT coach Dr Lucy Cradduck says, "It was different for the teams to appear on zoom; however, this was very realistic as it reflects the current operations of the Courts. Both teams appeared before noted senior members of the Bar or Academics, and held their own." 17.01.2022 With rising concerns about environmental sustainability, the intersection between law and fashion is of growing importance. #QUTLaw student Zoe Nay was a panellist on the topic of Fashion Justice at the 5th annual Crime, Justice and Social Democracy International Conference last year. Zoe spoke about the transboundary movement of textile waste and reflected upon the United Kingdom House of Commons Report about the circular economy. My presentation looked at integrating the ...biosphere and the technosphere to make clothing sustainable. I’m really passionate about environmental law and trying to see the voice that isn’t heard in the debate. Typically, we hear the politicians and the activists, but you don’t hear from the people who are being impacted the hardest. It was really interesting for me to analyse the policy by considering its impacts to developing nations. In the case of environmental sustainability, top-down governance is not going to do enough. It is you and I and the people around us who are going to make the real change. Never see your actions as too small to make a difference. Zoe will be presenting at the 2020 Fashion Justice Symposium this month: http://bit.ly/FJs320

15.01.2022 How do you become a seasoned pro at mooting? #QUTLaw alumnus Rebecca Treston QC says, The key to success in mooting is not natural ability, but the willingness and dedication to develop advocacy skills through continual practice. 15.01.2022 Stephanie Parkin, a proud Quandamooka woman completed undergraduate and postgraduate study in law. She now works to establish fair and ethical trade standards between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and those wanting to sell or licence their works. Reflecting on this year’s theme for NAIDOC week, Always was, Always will be Stephanie says, While we as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people recognise and value what that statement means, it is evident that... deep understanding of the meaning behind that statement is not fully recognised within the broader community and those with decision making power. This year’s theme is strong and resonates with all Aboriginal people. These lands and waters are a part of us that they always have and always will be. Nothing will change that. 14.01.2022 In 2021 Reconciliation Week is about more than words, it’s about taking action. For Joel, one of our recent #QUTLaw graduates, he says, To me Reconciliation Week is a reminder of what should really be done all year round. When it comes to reconciling, practical steps need to be taken. First Nations voices deserve to be recognised and heard, we shouldn’t have to keep asking for a say over our own affairs. 09.01.2022 Congratulations to Justice student Brayden who gained full-time employment with Suncorp following his internship. During his internship within the Fraud Integrity Department, Brayden shadowed staff, gaining a greater understanding of how insurance claims are identified as fraudulent, investigated, allowed and either released or rejected. The shadowing experience complimented his main research project for the internship which focused on highlighting emerging trends of insuranc...e fraud. Skills and concepts I learned within my Bachelor of Justice have been essential in understanding the insurance fraud landscape. For example, many of my units focused on conceptualising and responding to crime, which I applied during my internship. I was able to highlight the correlation between socio-economic status and insurance fraud and identified ways in which financial risk could be minimised through this conceptualisation of fraud. Congratulations Brayden! For more about Brayden's experience and other placement success stories: http://bit.ly/qjsps19 QUT (Queensland University of Technology) #StudyJustice

02.01.2022 "To me, Reconciliation Week offers an opportunity for all of society to take a moment to properly reflect on the past mistreatment of Australia’s Indigenous people, as well as the progress (or lack thereof) that Australia has made in uniting Australia’s Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, who have long been divided. In order to achieve true reconciliation, we need to acknowledge the wrongs that have been committed. True recognition goes beyond acknowledging or agreein...g that injustices were committed, but extends to understanding the ongoing effects of those injustices. It is only through honestly recognising these wrongs that we will all be able to fully see, and understand, the significant gap which still needs to be bridged between Australia’s Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. If society does not take the opportunity offered through weeks such as this to properly reflect, we cannot hope to get to the place where we should be with respect to achieving genuine reconciliation and the true unification of Australian society. Anyone can say that they want to see change, but the most difficult step is often taking the necessary steps to effect that change. While justifications and reasoning for this may vary, my experience has been that this difficulty often stems from a pre-emptive fear of facing hostility from others when attempting to enact change. This fear could be minimised if more people were willing to come together and take the same, unified strides toward bridging the gap. Perhaps then these small strides wouldn’t seem so daunting, and could lead to the larger strides that we need for true reconciliation. Essentially, we can all do more. In the spirit of embodying the theme of Reconciliation Week this year, we should all challenge ourselves to better consider where we can effect change in our everyday lives. Consider it, put it into action, and encourage others to walk alongside you in that journey." Thank you to recent #QUTLaw graduate Tia for those powerful words. We hope you have enjoyed this series.
