16.01.2022 Congratulations to QUT PhD candidate Ali Disher who recently completed the final seminar for her PhD. Alis research investigated the effects of diet and exercise on hydration status by tracking daily steps and activity as well as analysing participants intake. Her sample size of 38 participants yielded the unsurprising finding that the strongest influencers of hydration status are activity level (likely linked to how much someone sweats) and water intake. Interestingly th...e next strongest influencer in the diet was fibre intake, which appeared to play a role in increased water turnover and hence hydration status in this cohort - irrespective of activity level. Future research points to investigating factors that can elevate total body water above normal levels, for the purpose of hyperhydrating an individual. In Alis area of practice in sports nutrition, this may be beneficial in endurance sport where dehydration is commonplace and has been shown to negatively impact performance outcomes. See more

16.01.2022 Applications close at 5pm, Friday 4 September 2020

16.01.2022 It is conference season, but instead of jetting off to interesting destinations to present our research, we are connecting over Zoom from our offices and dining rooms! Today Dr Jules McGuire presented findings from her PhD at the annual meeting of the International Society of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity. The session was moderated by Dr Rebecca Byrne, in her role as co-chair of the Society's Early Childhood Education special interest group. #ISBNPAXChange2021

15.01.2022 We are very excited to announced the awarding of Dr Kelly Stewarts PhD "Bone Health and High Performance Athletes". Physical activity is beneficial for bones, however, intense and repetitive training as experienced in elite sport creates situations in which bone health may be compromised. This thesis provides evidence of reduced bone mineral density, and increased risk of injury, in International level triathletes. Regional differences in bone mineral density were found in relation to sex and training volume. The outcomes of poor bone health in elite athletes can interrupt or prematurely end careers (stress fractures) and may endure into post-career life (osteoporosis). Athlete bone health, therefore, should be monitored regularly, particularly in those that compete in endurance sports.

15.01.2022 Please join us in congratulating Dr Julianne McGuire who has received a QUT Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award for 2020. Dr McGuire's thesis was titled Exploring barriers and enablers in early childhood education and care services to meet Australian infant feeding guidelines, supervised by Professors Danielle Gallegos, Susan Irvine (QUT, Faculty of Education) and Julie Smith (ANU). In Danielle’s words, Jules really is a testament to perseverance, resilience and commitment t...o excellence. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/201105/
