25.01.2022 A somewhat unsettling article, written by a robot. Professor Christine Morleys research critically examines the potential reach of robots into social work and human services practices. Whatever your discipline, both Christines work and this article are worth reading for consideration about the future of any field invested in creating a healthy, fair and inclusive world. ... In the words of GPT-3, "The Industrial Revolution has given us the gut feeling that we are not prepared for the major upheavals that intelligent technological change can cause." 25.01.2022 PHSW researcher Professor Adrian Barnett apologises to the public for the poor state of health and medical research. "A personal apology feels appropriate because I’ve witnessed the many current problems in health and medical research for over two decades, and I’ve watched things get worse without doing enough to stop it." https://medianwatch.netlify.app/post/an_apology/

24.01.2022 Injuries from falling from ladders are a common cause of serious injury that brings people to emergency departments -- and incidence is increasing. Research has looked at ways to prevent injury, as well as the short term impact of injury. But this research by Kirsten Vallmuur and colleagues is the first published study of its kind to look at possible long term impacts of falling from a ladder.... This overlooked cause of injury appears to have some serious long term effects. Discover what they are here: https://bit.ly/2OGDfkF

24.01.2022 Placement news! Shane Warren caught up today with Makenzie (4th year undergrad) and Belinda (Ist year Master of SW) along with their Queensland Community Alliance (QCA) supervisor Elise (between Belinda and Makenzie) to do a mid placement review. You wont believe the experiences Belinda and Makenzie have had so far on placement, including the chance to roll out the QCA Assembly meeting, taking place next Monday night with none other than the Premier and the Leader of Opp...osition. The meeting will specifically address the Maroon Print, which includes specific commitments and actions on addressing social isolation, loneliness and mental health and is part of Makenzie and Belindas lobby (along with QCA) for a parliamentary inquiry into social isolation. A small placement. But big work. Heres the crew Hope Street Caf, a social enterprise established by Common Ground Qld and our friends Micah Projects.

23.01.2022 **New research** https://bit.ly/32ywMQF Christina Malatzky and colleagues look at racism in rural healthcare settings.... This paper uses two contrasting accounts of racism -- one by the patient, "Violet" and her experience of being racially vilified, and another by patients racially based assessments of their doctor. Heres an excerpt from the study of Violets account of their experience of racism within a rural health setting. Were sure youll agree, research like this is important in illuminating injustice like that experienced by Violet, but also looking at ways of emancipation from injustice for the benefit of marginalised patients and healthcare professionals.

19.01.2022 Many students studying social work or human services have a history of childhood adversity. Yet there is little discussion about how they best integrate this into their practice. PHSW researchers Michelle Newcombe, Judith Burton and Niki Edwards look for clarity around this murky issue by asking students themselves about their experiences of blending their personal stories with their burgeoning professional practices. ... 18.01.2022 In this discussion, Professor (social work) Mark Brough and Dr (public health) Joanne Durham and Researcher Advocate Dr Naomi Stekelenburg discuss some of the foundational philosophical and political assumptions underlying knowledge production -- and how these can be challenged by inclusive methods like PAR. https://youtu.be/Rq69nxvSoKc

18.01.2022 Key findings from latest report, co-created by Professor Hilary Bambrick, from the Climate Council reveal gas is far from clean; it is a polluting fossil fuel that is already harming our health, wellbeing and the climate. 1. Unconventional gas development, including fracking, is exposing Australian communities to unnecessary health risks. 2. Burning gas at home can harm our children’s health.... 3. Children and poorer households are at highest risk from, and most likely to be harmed by, gas production and use. 4. Gas is a polluting fossil fuel. Governments can prevent health issues, and reduce harm, by helping households, and the country, get off gas. 5. Clean energy alternatives like solar and wind are the key to a prosperous, healthy future for all Australians. Read the entire report here: https://www.climatecouncil.org.au//gas-habit-how-gas-harm/

14.01.2022 **New Research** "Stakeholder engagement" is a term thats used frequently in public health. And we know its vital to research translation.... But -- what does it mean and how do you go about getting it? Louise Baldwin and colleagues decided a good place to start in answering these questions was with the stakeholders in public health research themselves. 14.01.2022 **New research** In heterosexual & cis relationships there is a link between human-directed and animal-directed violence. Companion animals also provide victims with much support and love during experiences of violence. Little research has explored the links between humans and companion animals in TRANSGENDER and NON-BINARY peoples relationships.... In this research, Heather Fraser and colleagues found abusers of trans and non-binary people also often abused companion animals in the home, providing more evidence for "the link" between human and animal abuse. Findings also indicate companion animals provide a strong source of solace, friendship but also JOY, for trans and non-binary people experiencing abuse and exclusion. Importantly, this paper calls for more more SOCIAL, over bio-medically driven, research into trans and non-binary stigma and discrimination, claiming these are predominately social experiences, rather than medical ones. A significant statement about the nature of exclusion and the need to choose appropriate research methodologies to find evidence for change. Read the full paper here: https://bit.ly/3hu8Uld

14.01.2022 Acronyms can be great shortcuts to understanding. For example, EVERYONE knows "WTF" stands for water-soluble thiourea-formaldehyde...dont they? But in science writing, acronyms, can inhibit understanding for readers, especially when theyre overused or, if theyre used commonly only amongst a small group.... In this paper, Adrian Barnett and colleague look at acronym use in scientific abstracts between 1950 & 2019. What they find about acronym use in science writing is sure to make you go OMG! 07.01.2022 **PhD Story** All PhD researchers at our school have a story to tell and this PhD candidate, Asif Khalid is no different. Asif is originally from Pakistan. He trained as a pharmacist and worked on some prestigious studies looking at paediatric health. ... But now, rather than focus on the treatment of childhood diseases, hes curious about their prevention. So his PhD study will identify subclinical or undiagnosed cases of malnutrition among malnourished children. Khlaids research will make it easier to identify malnourishment so that the problems related to morbidity, mortality and hospitalisations can be averted by applying appropriate and timely intervention. Last week Asif completed the first major milestone of his PhD journey -- confirmation. A terrific achievement! If you are inspired by Asifs accomplishment or simply want to wish him well, feel free to add your comments below

06.01.2022 This is the smile of satisfaction if we've ever seen one! Congratulations to Sameera Senanayake on the submission of his PhD thesis. 06.01.2022 Public health research takes us to all parts of the globe. Like Kiribati. Kiribati is a small island developing state in the Equatorial Pacific.... It, and others like it, are among the most climate vulnerable places on Earth. As part of his PhD research on food sustainability in the face of the climate emergency, John Cauchis field work saw him in Kiribati, where he interviewed community leaders and residents about the best ways to negotiate the rising tides and food shortages already being experienced in the area. He himself experienced the impact of the encroaching sea, having to spend many mornings battling the flood waters at the door of his accomodation. His research has resulted in comprehensive findings about the current hazards in Kiribati and the strengths of the community in dealing with such hazards. This is one of the papers to come from his PhD work, published with his supervisory team. https://bit.ly/2Zl2oqP

06.01.2022 **New research** Theres a growing urgency to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs)** in low-and-middle income countries (LMICs). How to go about this is one of the big questions faced by public health experts from around the globe, especially when much of the available research focusses on high-income countries (HICs).... Taxing products that cause NCDs such as tobacco, alcohol and soft drinks is often suggested as part of the solution. This scoping review by health management lecturer Lana Elliott and colleagues looks at why and how targeted taxes are used to address NCDs in the LMICs. The paper (https://bit.ly/32hXYCX) identifies gaps in knowledge of, and calls for more rigorous and specifically focussed research into the political factors that influence health policymaking in LMICs. **Non-communicable diseases are the ones you dont catch from another person eg diabetes, cancers, most heart diseases.

05.01.2022 As Adrian Barnett reflects on his time as president of the Statistical Society of Australia, this is some of what he has to say: "It might sound strange to feel a debt to a thing, but statistics is a big thing. Often overlooked, misused and derided, statistics is so much more than facts and figures. Its a way to work out what the heck is going on, and the world needs that right now. (If you dont agree, youve been looking at the wrong statistics.)" Read more here: https://medianwatch.netlify.app/post/goodbye-president/
