21.01.2022 Dreaming - Self Portrait by Jim McKenzie 2020. Artist Statement: Its been a little challenging to find time to sculpt as freely as I use to now that Im a s...tay-at-home father. I decided I would take a break from art shows so I could focus 100% of my energy on family but before I could pull the art plug, my friends at Copro Gallery invited me to sculpt one last piece for the 25th annual LA Art show. I figured this would be the last piece I create for a while, so I wanted to make something that was true to myself, though I wasnt sure how that would translate visually. A lot of times when Im sculpting a piece, I dont necessarily know what Im making or even why Im creating it until its finished. When I started this self portrait, I hadnt had a full nights sleep in months. I needed a moment of solace, and if I couldnt get one in real life then perhaps this sculpture could. Sort of a wishful thinking piece. Dreaming is my interpretation of the blissful feeling you get during a deep REM sleep. The third eye symbolizing the POV of the dream state. The moon and stars are the characters within the dream. Black tears stream from sleeping eyes representing the shedding of negative thoughts. Creating this was both eerie and therapeutic. Sort of an outer body experience where you get to play the role of your own corpses mortuary makeup artist in an attempt to put yourself back together for a final viewing. A week after the sculpture was completed, I finally got a full nights sleep and the emotion from the sculpture manifested into my own. Sculpting materials- Monster Clay, Resin Cast, Apoxie Clay. Big shout out to Jake Corrick who helped with molding and Casting.

21.01.2022 Communication patterns around the world. British linguist Richard D. Lewis charted communication patterns as well as leadership styles and cultural identities i...n his book, "When Cultures Collide," now in a 2005 third edition. His organization offers classes in cross-cultural communication for big clients ranging from Unilever to BMW. In support of cultural studies, he writes: "By focusing on the cultural roots of national behavior, both in society and business, we can foresee and calculate with a surprising degree of accuracy how others will react to our plans for them, and we can make certain assumptions as to how they will approach us. A working knowledge of the basic traits of other cultures (as well as our own) will minimize unpleasant surprises (culture shock), give us insights in advance, and enable us to interact successfully with nationalities with whom we previously had difficulty." Although cultural generalizations can be overly reductive, Lewis, who speaks ten languages, insists it can be done fairly, writing: "Determining national characteristics is treading a minefield of inaccurate assessment and surprising exception. There is, however, such a thing as a national norm." Below, conversational range is shown with increasing width, obstacles are marked in gray, and cultural traits are noted as well. Source: Lewis, R. (2006). When cultures collide: Leading across cultures (3rd ed.). Nicholas Brealey International.

20.01.2022 The simplest way to kick in your creative drive is to engage your natural creative stream through finding your state of flow. In sports, some elite players will... engage their peripheral vision as a trigger and this has the effect of engaging your natural dream state ... Jazz musicians call it "In the Pocket", Sports people call it "In the Zone", Robin Williams used to call his place he'd go 'The Forever box. You can access your own true creative 'Forever Box' anytime you like. The essence of all of these states of mind is the 'O' for understanding and appreciating the whole of the subject - so you take in the wide view like a mastermind and then the 'E' for inspiration ... to approach the game with inspired vision. Then find a pencil ...
