24.01.2022 I must have looked a bit strange, standing on top of a wheelie bin leaned up against the wall, juggling a tripod and camera in the drizzle, all to get the angle I wanted. I was trying to avoid converging verticals, which is what happens when you tilt the camera up to shoot something high. To make sure the verticals (the edges of the building in this case) stay vertical you need to get the camera high enough so you’re shooting straight ahead and not tilting it up. Hence the ...wheelie bin It was my second or third attempt at this shot, after not being happy with the previous results. This time I waited for a wet Friday night because I wanted the reflections off the street, and the lights on in the hairdresser’s windows downstairs. It’s a great painting by a great artist, @adnate. I’m happy with the way the shot turned out, especially the contrast of warm and cold colours. . . . . . . #streetartmelbourne #streetart #adnate #photooftheday #photographysouls #capture #composition #streetphotographers

23.01.2022 After a decade of selling prints in person to customers from all over the world I’ve fielded many questions about my work, some of which are in my latest blog post. Head to the link in my bio, and then the blog menu.

22.01.2022 I was in Mount Isa, Queensland, taking a rare break from the constant driving. I found somewhere quiet and peaceful, parked the van so I could lay on my bed and look out over a little lake, and spent most of the day reading and napping. When it was time to go and I was driving away I see a flock (bevy? ostentation? muster? party?) of peacocks and thought there might be a shot to be had. 21.01.2022 Around four years ago, I had a brilliant idea about how to promote my photos and prints. I’d shot this image on a recent trip and I thought that if all the people living in those houses knew they could buy this image as a print, they’d all want one hanging on their walls in a nice frame. When guests came over, they’d see it and go ‘Wow, nice shot’ and the owner would go ‘Thanks’ and the guests would go ‘Where are we?’ and they’d point and go ‘Right here!’ and everyone wo...uld be happy. And so it went, in my imagination. Check out my blog post to see how my idea turned out! . . . . . . . . . . #bondibeach #bondibeachsydney #aerialphotography #aviationphotography #travel #ocean #bondi #travelphotography #beachphotography #beach

20.01.2022 Prague, Czech Republic. I love this clock. It's the Prague Astronomical Clock, it's been there for over 400 years before Melbourne (where I live) was even founded, it's huge and it looks fantastic. I decided on a dawn shot to get the sun on the wall so, as usual, it was another early morning for me. I got lucky with the weather, unusual for me, so I wasn't out of bed for nothing. Normally there are dozens if not hundreds of tourists standing in front of and all around the clo...ck so a shot like this would be impossible, but at this time of the day, when sane people are still in bed, I had a chance of a clear shot. Except there were two young backpackers sitting right in front at the base of the clock, reading a map. It felt rude to ask them to move just for me so I walked around a bit, hoping they'd get up and leave on their own. They didn't and the sun wasn't going to wait so I approached them, told them what I was trying to do, and asked if they could just scoot out of the way for a bit so I could take a quick shot. They couldn't have been nicer about it and this was the result. Then a lady with a camera who was hovering nearby came up and thanked me because she was also waiting for them to leave and take her own shot. It's a popular clock. 20.01.2022 When I first saw this painting it stopped me in my tracks. I thought it was a great piece of street art and I wanted to shoot it as soon as possible before someone tagged it or worse, painted over it (there are a lot of guys painting and space is limited). I was back the next afternoon and shot it from a number of different angles and thought this was the strongest (I also like having the wedding party in the background). ... Eventually it got tagged and painted over - but not before becoming one of the most popular pieces of street art in Melbourne. Joker art by Owen Dippie @owendippie High quality prints are available via my website - ready for framing (see link in bio) . . . . . . . . . . #streetart #printsforsale #urbanart #streetphotography #wallart #streetartphotography #streetartistry #muralart #painting #instagraffiti #owendippie #andrewbertuliet

18.01.2022 I was standing on the top of a six foot step ladder which was leaning up against the tree, one arm hugging the trunk to keep steady which left me trying to work the camera controls and take the shot one handed. I don’t know why he reached out like that - maybe he saw his reflection (males have a dark chest patch) in the lens or he was trying to get at the source of the clicking. Either way he certainly wasn’t scared of me. He let me give him a little pat on the arm and I coul...d feel how soft his nose was when I held out my hand for him to have a sniff. They’re a lot of fun up close. Prints, as always, available through the website. . . . . . . . . . #koala #naturephotography #wildlifephotography #yarravalleylife See more

18.01.2022 Melbourne Aerial. This is one of my favourite aerial images. I was in a hot air balloon which was a first for me, and the experience had some good and some bad points. The good was how smooth and silent it was. When you’re travelling at wind speed it’s completely silent which, when you’ve shot aerials mostly from fixed wing planes, is a blessing. It’s a stable platform (another blessing) and there are no wings, wheels or struts to get in the way. And I could fly much lower ...in the balloon than I can in a plane so it’s a shot I normally couldn’t get (and the main reason I like it so much). The bad? Having no control over where we went or what time we took off. Also, at $440 a flight it’s not cheap. The landing was a bit of a shock, too. Instead of setting down on the grass near Albert Park lake we had a hard landing on the road behind the lake, crashing head on into a LandCruiser. Nobody was hurt but I think the pilot’s ego copped some damage. (Did you notice the face on the building, top right?). Prints of this shot are available from just $75 (A3 size, 300gsm fine art paper) with free delivery worldwide. There's also a colour version of this one on my site (link in bio). . . . . . . . . #melbourneaerial #melbourne #hotairballoon #printsavailable #walldecor #wallart #printsforsale #photographyart #photograpy #blackandwhite

17.01.2022 St Kilda Harbour. This is my penguin shot. At least it was supposed to be. I don't often head out with a specific image in mind and when I do it's even less often that I actually come back with it but on this night I wanted the little penguins that nest in the rocks at the end of St Kilda pier. I didn’t see any, got bored after 10 minutes (I’d make a great wildlife photographer) and started looking around. I shot this as a long exposure on the tripod from the end of the pier ...looking across St Kilda harbour to the city. No penguins, but a nice shot all the same. 17.01.2022 The old boat shed on the Swan River in Western Australia. Another iconic landmark shot that every photographer who goes to Perth will have a stab at. I like the way this turned out but it wasn’t easy. Those boards leading to the shed are slippery, wobbly, and not all there. I wanted a long exposure to get the movement of the clouds so the camera had to be rock steady for 30 seconds but even with the tripod as solid as I could get it, just standing behind the camera caused m...ovement because that walkway is so unstable. The only way around it was to set everything up how I wanted it then use the timer delay on the camera to open the shutter in 20 seconds time (the longest delay) and slowly walk back far enough that I wasn’t affecting the camera. With the slipperiness of the boards, the odd gap here and there and the tripod balanced on the narrow slats, it wasn’t hard to imagine it all ending in tears. . . . . . . . #swanriver #swanriverboatshed #perth #swanriverperth #perthtourism #perthnow #exploringwa #visitperth #sunset #westernaustralia

15.01.2022 Melbourne under COVID. Like any city in the world lately, Melbourne doesn’t quite look the same. The buildings haven’t changed but with businesses closed and people indoors it’s lost a lot of the vibrancy and character it’s known for. One upside, if you’re desperate to find one, is that a different looking city means different photos. 14.01.2022 Central Park, New York. This is not an easy shot to get because of the time, logistics and money that go into it but spending mornings flying all over New York City in a helicopter can be a lot of fun. I'm often asked if I shot this from a building and I wish I could say yes because it would have been a lot easier and cheaper but it has to be an aerial shot. Not long after I took this one I told the pilot I wanted to shoot straight down over the Empire State Building so ther...e we are over the building doing aerial doughnuts so he could get the helicopter on a steep enough angle and I could hang outside the open doorway and shoot downwards. I was trying to concentrate on what I was doing and keep the nausea down as much as possible but I was also trying to remember if I'd left any camera gear loose in the cockpit because at that angle I was worried it would fall out and kill some poor tourist below. Fortunately, no gear or vomit left the cockpit on that flight for which I am grateful. . . . . . . . #newyork #interiordesign #centralparknyc #usa #wallart #aeralphotography See more

12.01.2022 Great Ocean Road, Victoria. Another cold night in the car, this time at Port Campbell so I could get up early and hopefully catch a decent sunrise. I had a particular shot in mind but when I saw the blanket grey cloud cover I knew I’d have to find something different. I’d just gone past the main car park for the apostles when the sun poked through and I had the road, the clouds, the cliffs, the ocean and some sunlight all together. I hit the brakes, backed up, grabbed the cam...era, climbed onto the roof and shot quickly, knowing the light wouldn’t last. If you look close you’ll see a dark speck on the road in the distance. Turned out to be an old German guy on a bicycle, riding around the whole Australian coastline. He reckoned it would take him about six months. 11.01.2022 This was at Great Western, Victoria, which is half way between Ararat and Stawell. They have a rodeo every year on Good Friday, and I went there specifically with a shot kind of like this in mind. I sat there in the dirt and dust by the railing with my lens inches from the bulls and horses whizzing past for hours. Legs cramping and trying to keep my sensor dust free I shot everything I could, hoping for the best. ... I chose this one because I liked the composition of the horse going right and the rider left into open space, the horse being completely off the ground and the rider having his foot in the stirrup and his tongue out. But I didn’t like the background because it was too busy and they didn’t stand out enough, hence the partial black and white. It took about three hours in photoshop to get the fine detail I wanted (the horse’s mane was the worst) but I think it was worth it. The first person ever to buy this print was a chiropractor - she bought it to hang in her waiting room. This and many more prints are available now via my website (see link in Bio) - with free delivery to anywhere in the world! . . . . . . . #photographyart #prints #artist #homedecor #artwork #interior #wallart #printsforsale #printsavailable #walldecor #interiordesign #interiordecor

10.01.2022 Sally. Friendliest horse I've ever met. Not that I've met many horses. I shot this image a long time ago when I was still figuring out how I could make money with the camera. ... Back then, I was making out a living doing real estate photography and I was on a 20 acre property shooting the grounds. I'd wandered into the stable, looking for something interesting to supplement the house and paddock shots, and this horse walked up to the opening to check me out. I know absolutely nothing about horses but she didn't look like she was going to bite (although I wouldn't know what that looked like) so I reached in and gave her a pat. She seemed to like that so I spent some time with her, marvelling at her size and the way she moved, keeping her company. I loved the way she was lit, the dark contrasts and the way she was framed in that opening, so I took this shot just for me. . . . . . . . . #horsesofinstagram #horse #printsforsale #photographyart #photographysouls #photography #walldecor #wallart #interiordesign #interiordecor

09.01.2022 It's called 'Architectural Fragment' (created by Petrus Spronk) but they should have called it Hiding in Plain Sight because nobody seems to notice it’s there. I love it and I’m always asked if it’s real and where it is, even by people who live in the city. I think it doesn’t get noticed much because it’s situated so close to the street and everyone walks behind it. Also because it’s the same colour as the footpath and maybe it blends in. Skateboarders certainly know it’s the...re because they’re all over it. If you’d like to check it out it’s right outside the State Library on Swanston St (corner La Trobe). . . . . . . . . #melbourne #melbournephotography #statelibrary #architecturalfragment #petrusspronk #melbournesculpture #swanstonstreet #melbourneart See more

08.01.2022 What a stunning city. In a way it reminded me of Rome - another beautiful city I'd love to spend months exploring - until you see how chock full of tourists it is (well it was pre-COVID!). But the tourists are only there because it's such a beautiful city, so ... what do you do? I took hundreds of shots of Venice at the time, but found it hard to get one that shows a quieter side, one that was obviously Venice but with less of the commercialism. I knew if I timed this ...one right I'd get the gondola and gondolier but no tourists in the shot and there'd be no mistaking the location. It took a while but I was very pleased with the result. Prints are available for sale on my website: https://bit.ly/2NF6bJc. 07.01.2022 I was on a short trip, just driving around Victoria for three or four days, heading nowhere special but trying to go down roads I hadn’t driven a million times already. After a couple of days had gone by and I hadn’t taken one decent shot I was starting to question what I was doing out there (not unusual for me). On this morning the forecast was for fog so I got up before dawn with fingers crossed and went looking for something interesting. An hour or so later I still had... nothing and was frustrated, annoyed and felt like packing it in and going home. But then I came upon this scene and I was so pleased with the image the last few days didn’t matter. For every shot I take that I think is good enough to print there are hundreds, sometimes thousands, that aren’t. Which means a lot of wasted time, lots of driving and lots of money spent and nothing to show for it. But, as I have to keep reminding myself, the more time I spend looking the more chance I have of finding something. You never know what’s around the corner. 06.01.2022 Melbourne. It’s not Degraves St as most people think but Centre Place - and it’s worth having a walk through. It’s chock full of interesting shops and cafés, and runs from Collins St (between Swanston and Elizabeth) to Flinders Lane (where Degraves starts). I shot this early on a wet morning because I wanted the reflections, the lights to be on and because any later and there’d be too many people in the shot. It’s a busy part of town, (usually) popular with tourist...s and locals alike. And it’s not uncommon to hear people exclaim, when they see the little Creperie place in the shot, "We had breakfast there!" . . . . . . . . #melbourne #centreplace #centreplacemelbourne #victoria #photographyart #wallart #decorideas #designinspiration #printsforsale #artprints See more

06.01.2022 Australia v India. It was the day after Boxing Day, December 27th, 2012, Australia v India at the MCG. I took this shot not really thinking much about it, just wanted to see what a crowd shot would look like. The more I looked at it the more I liked it, especially in black and white. I’m hoping one day someone will look at it and realise they were there that day and find themselves in the shot. 05.01.2022 I’d been trying to get a shot like this for a while, but they always jump out in front of you at the last second from the bushes and I’ve never been quick enough. And no, this wasn’t just before I ran him over! Having spotted him off to the left, I slowed the car, grabbed the camera off the passenger seat and waited for him to play chicken.... He made his move, click, click, click through the windscreen and that was it. 05.01.2022 This shot of The Apostles took a long time to come about. It’s a simple shot to take once you’re there (after you elbow all the other photographers out of the way), it just needs the right light - and that’s the hard part. Every time I came here it would be terrible light - thunder storms can be good, a few scattered clouds is good - anything but the dull, overcast grey skies I kept getting. It’s also better to try this shot in Summer rather than Winter, because the sun... sets further to the left so you’re getting more of that nice, warm light on the cliff face - and not into the camera. Finally, on about my sixth or seventh visit, I got this shot and I'm pretty happy with it. Which isn’t to say I won’t be back (when I can!) - there are many good shots to be had all around this part of the coast. ~ Imagine this beautiful panomamic print on your wall.
