23.01.2022 A little reminder. See you this evening!
22.01.2022 It's been 4 years, yet many of us still can't shake off the sorrow of the shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando on 12 June 2016. Walk on through the wind Walk on through the rain Though your dreams be tossed and blown... Walk on Walk on With hope in your heart You'll never walk alone. We will never walk alone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ab9P9EA25Ko
22.01.2022 We stand on the land of the First Nations. As newcomers we have done wrong, and we are truly sorry for that. However, it doesn't stop there. We will continue to respect and support the rights and wellbeing of the Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders. We owe you. 26 May is our National Sorry Day. "National Sorry Day, or the National Day of Healing, is an annual event that has been held in Australia on 26 May since 1998, to remember and commemorate the mistreatmen...t of the country's Indigenous peoples, as part of an ongoing process of reconciliation between the Indigenous peoples and the settler population. During the 20th century, Australian government policies caused children to be separated from their families, with the intention of assimilating them into White Australian culture. This resulted in what became known as the "Stolen Generations", with the effects of these traumatic removals being felt by succeeding generations even today." [source: wikipedia]

21.01.2022 Today is the International Transgender Day of Visibility. Qwire joins our friends around the world celebrating our Trans friends, not only today, but we shall celebrate their love, courage, and hope everyday. "International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) is an annual event occurring on March 31 dedicated to celebrating transgender people and raising awareness of discrimination faced by transgender people worldwide, as well as a celebration of their contributions to soci...ety. The day was founded by US-based transgender activist Rachel Crandall of Michigan in 2009 as a reaction to the lack of LGBT recognition of transgender people, citing the frustration that the only well-known transgender-centered day was the Transgender Day of Remembrance which mourned the murders of transgender people, but did not acknowledge and celebrate living members of the transgender community." 21.01.2022 "30 years ago - on May 17, 1990 - the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia & Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) celebrates LGBTIQ people globablly, and raise awareness for the work still needed" [source: idahobit.org.au]... Today, 30 years on, we grow stronger and stronger. With love and compassion, we strive against hate and discrimination. Oh, don't be surprised, we will still rise. And yes, we won't just survive. The world will see us thrive. [Qwire sings Rise]

20.01.2022 5 June is the World Environment Day. The theme this year is "Time for Nature". How apt. This year the destructive side of humanity has manifested in full force locally, regionally, and globally.... Life and earth are interconnected. We are all part of the One. There is no separation; there is no escape. Qwire's theme this year is also about our nature, our environment, and our world, beginning humbly from our recognition of the International Year of Plant Health 2020. And then we started to wade through the debris of our sick world since before 2019 concluded. It's impossible to forget the devastating bushfires where homes and lives are lost. And the flood. And the pandemic. And many other symptoms emerging around the world. And now our 46,000-year-old Aboriginal heritage site... Our hope is that humanity also has the creative and caring side. We have our world on our shoulders. And we can help spread the awareness. People have the power to change for the better. We believe, so here we are. Our original plan for this month is to sing for the 2020 World Environment Day Dinner held by Conservation Council ACT Region, which now has been moved to November. Our hope is that more and more people become aware that the environment is not a remote topic where you need to travel for miles to experience. It's happening right at home. Everywhere. 19.01.2022 A great initiative from our friends A Gender Agenda and AIDS Action Council, IDAHOBIT online panel discussion. Please see details on the event page.
18.01.2022 Found this great info shared by our friends AIDS Action Council about chest binding in the time of COVID-19. Please feel free to share with your trans friends, family, and network. Be safe all of us!
17.01.2022 We are sad that this year we are not able to sing for you and join you in situ for this long loving and much loved tradition of our community. But our love stays on and stays strong through this difficult time. Let's join our friends at AIDS Action Council and remember all those who have passed at this online memorial. While we cannot light our candles all together in one place, we can light our little candles everywhere and share the love and the light around.
17.01.2022 UPDATE : The Feast on the Foreshore event has been cancelled. Oh well. Keep safe everyone. Our friends Adelaide Qwire is performing this Sunday at the Foreshore. If you are around, go listen to them and give them love from us the Canberra mob!
17.01.2022 Message from our Music Director Karen.
17.01.2022 Transgender Awareness Week starts on 13 November, leading up to Transgender Day of Remembrance, 20 November, which remembers the victims of transphobic violence. There are still many issues that transgender and gender non-conforming people face, some of which are harmful or even life threatening. The Society needs to provide a good protection for everyone, our trans families and friends included. This week is about raising awareness, being open to learn more about each other,... and realising that we all are fellow human beings.
16.01.2022 We are invited to support Trevor Daley Fund to help people living with HIV. Have a look below. "The Trevor Daley Fund (TDF) was established in 1992 to honour the memory of one of the AIDS Action Council's (now Meridian) earliest members and volunteers, Trevor Daley. TDF provides financial assistance to people living with HIV in times of financial hardship and also to achieve specific goals and aspirations. TDF minimises the social and personal impacts of HIV by supporting people living with HIV to meet their needs and plan for their future health and wellbeing with independence and self-determination. TDF provides practical support to enhance the quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS."
15.01.2022 Message from our Convenor, Anne-Marie
15.01.2022 Happy Non-Binary! At Qwire we celebrate every gender and sexual identity. Isn't diversity beautiful and wonderful! 14 July is the International Non-Binary People's Day. It's chosen to be exactly between International Women's Day in March and International Men's Day in November. Isn't that clever!... It's also amazing that we learn more and more about ourselves and each other in this loving and caring community. No matter how we identify ourselves, there is always place for us to be proud. And that place is here, there, and everywhere. Happy Enby Day to us all!
14.01.2022 Several Qwire members attended the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial hosted by AIDS Action Council this evening. An insightful talk and a touching play reading. We are sad that we couldn't sing, but we are glad that the candles are lit once again. Gone but never forgotten. We will see you again next year.
14.01.2022 Please see message from our friend AIDS Action Council.
14.01.2022 Canberra Qwire joins #resolution2020 global movement on climate action and sings World on Our Shoulders from our individual homes 'couch choir' style. If there is one lesson from this year, it is that real Action on Climate is urgent, and Canberra Qwire is participating in this global call to action, said Anne-Marie Delahunt, Qwire Convenor. Qwire’s Musical Director Karen Wilden noted, The devastation of the bushfire season made our involvement in the global movement #res...olution2020 an important part of the message we wanted to share with the Canberra community through music. Qwire's theme for this year 2020 is 'Nature', chosen to recognise the United Nations International Year of Plant Health. Canberra's recent experience acutely reflects the great perils our world is heading towards and how urgent it has become. We are all standing with the World on Our Shoulders. Let's make a resolution to keep it safe. Because together we can. * * * * * World on Our Shoulders * Music and lyrics by: Robin Howl, Violet Skies, Holly Fletcher * Arranged and additional verse by: Jessica Stewart, Karen Wilden #resolution2020 https://resolution2020.global/ Join the Resolution Special thanks : Video produced by Coordinate https://coordinate.com.au/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1gL3UtHCFI

13.01.2022 Useful info: "We urge all trans people and allies to put together a plan of action that not only considers basic health needs, but also your specific needs as a trans person. It is important that trans people are prepared if an outbreak occurs in your communities."
12.01.2022 Big thanks to RISE Canberra for having our rehearsals listed. And while you are there, have a look around. So many interesting arts and culture events going on in our Canberra! https://risecanberra.com/whats-on/qwire-rehearsal/
12.01.2022 Dear LGBTIQ+ Community and our allies A Gender Agenda (AGA), is a local organisation that supports Trans, Gender Diverse and Intersex people, their families and... allies. AGA was successful in a grant from Hands Across Canberra, the Chief Minister’s Charitable Fund and the Office for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs (OATSIA) to develop local resources that build on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQ+ supports and to increase awareness. The project is to benefit LGBTIQ+ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, Community, organizations and the wider community. The resources will range from print and digital information to a short video consisting of differing profiles of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQ+ peoples. AGA will work in collaboration with Nungala Creative and our partners ACTCOSS Gulanga Program, RACR Dhunlung Yarra Service and Meridian (formally AIDS Action Council). This project is of high importance and necessitates input and collaboration from our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQ+ Community. We are therefore seeking to form an advisory committee for the project. We would need the committee to meet (through Zoom) to discuss and review the project three/four times over the next several months. We are aiming for our first zoom meeting to be on Thursday 14 May 2020 at 2pm and are hoping to finalise the project by the end of August 2020. If interested please connect with Alistair Ott at [email protected] by Thursday morning 14 May 2020. If you are interested in keeping up to date on the project but you cannot be involved in the advisory committee, we are creating a mailing list for those who would like to stay informed, again let Alistair know and we will keep you in the loop. Kindest Regards, AGA
11.01.2022 Hooray! Qwire is back online! Tonight we had our first sectional rehearsals online. Isn't technology wonderful! We are very happy to report that 57 members attended. (Not bad for the first run, isn't it.) Here's is a happy snapshot of our Tenors. (We had 12 tonight but 2 dropped off just when we were shooting...) More happy snapshots of other sections in weeks to come.... It's difficult time, but we are committed to work on our songs so we will be ready when the time is right. Wouldn't that be something to look forward to! Thanks all friends of Qwire for your love and support. Our love back to you. Keep well and stay safe.
11.01.2022 Hooray! Qwire is featured once again on RISE Canberra. Thank you so much for your support. Qwire in the Park is on this Saturday already! How time flies. We are very excited now and hope you are too! https://risecanberra.com//five-questions-with-qwire-in-th/
10.01.2022 Qwire families and friends. Ours is a strong and loving community. Please take care of yourself and your beloved first and foremost. If you need help, seek one. If you need to turn it off, please do. We stay safe to march another day.
10.01.2022 We humans are in this together. COVID-19 doesn't discriminate, and health response shouldn't either. National LGBTI Health Alliance invites us to join the pledge. Stay safe all.
10.01.2022 A lovely Easter message for the children of Canberra from the ACT Children's Commissioner, Jodie.
08.01.2022 Wear It Purple Day today! Friday 28 August is "The" day this year. Wear It Purple Day is about supporting young LGBTIQ+ people. Growing up is never easy.We certainly don't want bullying and discrimination based on gender and sexual identity on top of all that. Young people should be allowed and supported to be true to their own selves. And Wear It Purple Day is aimed to raise awareness so we the less young people can join hands and hearts, making our society a better place fo...r them and us all. Canberra Qwire sends our representatives to be proudly featured on our Wear It Purple Day card. We've got quite a few different shades of purple on display even! Happy Wear It Purple Day to us all! https://www.wearitpurple.org/our-story #WearItPurple #WIPD
08.01.2022 One great thing about the online technology is that it helps us to enjoy each other's company over a long distance. Our friends Melbourne Gay & Lesbian Chorus are having a BIG SASSY sing along night (tomorrow). Now you can join in wherever you are, in or outside Australia. Isn't that neat!
07.01.2022 Unfortunately and very sadly, we have to cancel our rehearsals for now until further notice. While we love our weekly gathering and singing so much, the safety and wellbeing of our members and community takes first priority. But despair not! We've been working on some creative alternatives to allow us to rehearse together from home! And before long, we will be back!
07.01.2022 We hope you’re enjoying Global Pride 2020! We’re proud to be a part of the #GlobalPride community and seeing our people from around the world celebrating their pride despite lockdowns reminds us of the great time we had gathering together last October. Enjoy this and look forward to that time when we can all gather again! Happy Pride everyone!
06.01.2022 "Why is this day important? Because domestic violence happens across our community, it does not matter your gender, nor does it matter your sexual orientation." Let's be aware and help spread the words. Domestic Violence Crisis Service ACT is available to provide help and support.
06.01.2022 Canberra's best drag talents on Facebook Live! Good news from our friends Canberra SpringOUT Pride Festival. Wednesday night at 8 pm. Let's enjoy a great show from home. That's entertainment!
05.01.2022 Our beloved Leonard Weiss, one of our former Music Directors, in the news! Yay! It's so good to hear he is achieving so much and enjoying his time there. Qwire sends love from home! https://citynews.com.au//leonards-learning-lots-in-baltim/ Credit image: original article on CityNews
02.01.2022 Today is Lesbian Visibility Day. Qwire join our friends in celebrating lesbian women and women who are attracted to women in all diversity. Our LGBTIQ+ family have journeyed together for quite some time, but there is still much stigma and social disadvantage surrounding our lesbian friends. We still have along way to go, and we shall go together all the way. Note : Lesbian Visibility Day is believed to start in 2008, but the origin is unknown. There is no one official lesbian flag. We use this spectrum of colours hoping to encompass all diversity in the lesbian family.
