21.01.2022 This lockdown has created a new line of work for us which at this point has us busy . 8 m fence for the back yard , then another 38m , 50m and 14m fences to go . So when working for others stops it gets busier in other areas.

21.01.2022 This was another major find the rot between the Skeg and the hull . You can see in the photo part of the bottom panels cut away to be replaced but in the process of preparing to put the patch in it was found just aft of the centrecase slot . You can see the bolt that holds the Skeg on . The blue and white paint is the Skeg the red is the hull. It seems that there was a join which the water entered and the meranti just dissolved under the paint.

21.01.2022 For over a yr now we have been working on restoring a house in Warrnambool finally it is finished . The market is so strong at the moment it sold before it was placed on the market . It also sold for a record high price for the area . I have included many before and after shots and will post more in comments . This was a huge job as you will see .

20.01.2022 The amount of mush that was once plywood in the bottom of this Hartley 21 this is a result of water being left in the hull or the vessel being left in the water . Plywood turns to soft foam like rot that is soft and gives way very easy . This hole was tapped out with a very small hammer . One location I put my finger through with ease . Plywood boats do not like being left in the water long term . This is repairable and all rot is now removed . Centreboard can be seen

20.01.2022 New centre plate for old Hartley 21 . Left is old one of 84 kg 13 mm plate . Right is new one 16mm plate approximately 200kg my design to increase righting ability and lift . White marks are Keel line and width of old keel.

20.01.2022 This winter Louise got a new prop The old prop was a 12x12 it was ideal for the previous engine a yanmar ysm8 which was replaced some years ago now with a simplex . Yes it seems like a backwards step . Both are single pot engines both rated under 10 hp both about the same weight One is australian made and still available new at a price less than the yanmar . Both are 4 stroke . ... but this is were it becomes interesting The yanmar would need to run at 3000 rpm to hit the hull speed of Louise which is 6 knots . With the reduction in the gearbox the shaft speed would be 1200 rpm this engine had all the modern gear but was loud and vibrated a lot . I was told it sounded like I was being followed by a helicopter. It was overloaded if it was charging a battery it never liked running hard for a long time . The rating was 8 hp new rating but would need to have an rpm at 3500 to gain 8 hp . So really 6 hp if lucky. Simplex This is it no reduction box larger prop 13x12 less vibration . Quite as you can tell. electric start if wanted . 4 knots idling 500 rpm and 1/4 throttle is hull speed at wait for it 800 rpm at which it will run all day without complaining or me becoming deaf . This engine is rated 6-7 hp old rating real hp. Look how the engine just sits there . This is solid mounted . The fuel type is different but consumption is if anything less .

18.01.2022 Finally heron is finished after being put on the back burner for over two yrs it is now ready to sail but also ready for sale I have no room and no time to sail it .

16.01.2022 Repairs coming along with new transom already fitted and repairs in side deck

12.01.2022 The finding of rot is still constant in old plywood trailer sailers that have been neglected at some point . Presently I have cut sections of the deck out and replaced it , large sections of the hull ply, the transom has been fully replaced , a section of the cabin side and just discovered a section on the cabin roof just forward of the mast step. This is all to be expected from a vessel that was most likely built in the 1970s and left in the weather and or water for a long period of time . She is now coming up like a new boat

11.01.2022 Just acquired another old heron saved from the never ending hide it in storage then take it to the tip. This one has been modified and I know exactly who did the job ( us ) many yrs ago . The old girl needs a few repairs and paint but she is sound. She is not far off the current heron class rules and will bring her closer to them in the make over.

09.01.2022 Finding more rot in the Hartley 21 this time the hog inside or some know it as the keel . This holds both bottom panels along the centre line . The timber was non existent and disintegrated. No way to replace the damaged bottom panels with no hog or keel . Not sure how extensive it is until I remove the big ingot of lead 150 kgs bolted in this location between Frame 1 and 2 just forward of the mast compression post . This could very easy have ended badly while on the bay. Clearly this boat has been In or has had fresh water in it for a long period to rot the underwater sections like this . Meranti ( which was used ) was never recommended for boats for this reason . but 90% of the Hartleys were built using it .

08.01.2022 From this to this . ( work still in progress so she will look even better when finished)

06.01.2022 Finally after long delays with other rot issues I got the keel repaired the huge patch in the hull now need to do the painting and fitting out. Then focus on the trailer which can be improved.

06.01.2022 Modified heron ( second heron out of the two) gets first coat of varnish this boat is a race winner

04.01.2022 Progress with the boats no knowing which one to finish first and with the weather unpredictable it seems it is safer to do the ones in the shed on the iffy days . But they need to be moved out to be worked on which takes time . Hopefully at least one will be finished soon so space can be made . Today mast and rudder varnished and a deck on a heron . As well as buoyancy tank sealed up .

04.01.2022 Finally after many delays due to rot and weather finally she is back on her trailer with the hull repaired and painted now to finish off the deck

02.01.2022 Another fence completed over the weekend a fence well over due .

01.01.2022 I was just scrolling through eBay and gumtree and found it fascinating the different labels that people use . Eg Project boat ? When is a boat not requiring something ? ... Every boat is a project boat that is boats if you finish a fix it list you are not looking hard enough. Needs a little work or needs a little TLC This in the sellers words are- Here is some firewood if anyone wants to pay marine prices for it ! The classic words couta boat ! This term is used on anything from mirror dinghies to 50 ft motor boats just due to it being built of timber. The true couta boat was only built in sizes 20 ft - 26ft they were sailing boats with centre plate. Putt putt boat ? This is a discription of a boat ? Sounds more like golf ! Yes agreed that the engine makes a putt putt sound but what is the length , width , draft , construction , condition ? Is the engine really made to make that sound or is it just sick ? If so what is the make? Fun boat The seller could not think of any good reason they bought it and cannot think of any reason anyone would want to buy it ! Like new Really means we trashed it bogged the holes and want to sell it before the bog falls out. Total rebuild This is the most used and many times not true Many times people paint the hull and say total rebuild or replace one part that they damaged. It took them ages as they had no idea . Or another term for firewood ! Classic boat Many are advertised under this label all due to the fact the present owner cannot remember ever seeing it on the water . Clinker or kinker Very few people know what this means Some say the engine makes it a clinker some say it is a timber boat or even plywood so it must be a klinker or clinker. But the true meaning is over lapping planks . Weather board house type look . Or Viking ship look !

01.01.2022 Fencing this weekend 40 m this time .

01.01.2022 This is an example of what happens to 316 stainless steel if used under water or in timber that is wet most of the time . The screw on the right is 316 stainless steel in the same timber as the bolt on the left . The left is a copper bolt hand made . Both have been in the same timber in salt water on and off for 20 yrs . The bolt is still is usable ... For everyone out there with stainless steel check the bolts and screws before the coming summer / or you use your boat as like these would have sunk the boat unexpectedly with no warning . See more

01.01.2022 It seems I am the first person that has ever had a centreplate from all three famous Hartley designs together in one place and to me it explains a lot about their sailing abilities. The top centre plate is from a Hartley 16 the second ( black painted one) Hartley 18 and the largest off a Hartley 21 . All the lengths are the same from pivot pin to bottom . The thicknesses are the same . The biggest change is 160mm . He scaled the hull up but not the plates in my opinion . Makes one wonder how much difference each would go with a scaled up plate?
