21.01.2022 Good morning all. The RAAF Museum continues to remain closed IAW the current VIC State Government and Defence requirements. With regard to the re-opening of the Museum, further advice will be provided when available. Despite being closed to the public, work continues in the background to ensure the Museum will be ready to open to the public when possible. To this end, Curatorial staff have been busy developing and installing new displays in readiness.... As an example of this work, here is two images of the recently installed RAAF VC case in the Upper Heritage Gallery.

21.01.2022 Good evening all. Unfortunately the RAAF Museum continues to remain closed IAW the VIC State Government and Defence requirements. As most will be aware, the RAAF Museum displays more than just flying aeroplanes and those that have visited the Museum will have seen this engine on display. Whilst Rolls Royce originally designed and built the Merlin series of liquid cooled V12 aero engines, it could not keep up with supply and as a consequence Ford, Packard and Continental buil...t various models of this engine for the RAF, RAAF, USAAC and other allies. Not only were these engines used in fighters, they were also used in the Mosquito and Lancaster bomber, along with other aircraft types in great numbers. The RAAF also used a variant of the Merlin in the Avro Lincoln bombers. A number of different models of Merlins were used to power the lincoln's, however only one of them was built in Australia. This engine was the Merlin 102 built by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation(CAC) under licence to Rolls Royce at the CAC engine factory in Lidcombe, Sydney. The Museum has one of these rare engines on display and thanks to the great work by the Museum's volunteers and staff, it looks spectacular.

21.01.2022 Good evening all. IAW the VIC State Government and Defence requirements, the RAAF Museum will continue to remain closed. Contractors are continuing to work on the various upgrades to the Museum precinct with works progressing well and thankfully the weather has been suitable for the re-roofing of some of the hangars. Today's series of images were taken at Point Cook during the 2019 Avalon Airshow. The Trainer Formation operated from the RAAF Museum giving some great photographic opportunities. The Trainer Formation Team is made up of aircraft from the RAAF Museum fleet and private owners of CT4A, Winjeel and Harvard / Texan / SNJ aircraft who volunteer their time and aircraft to participate in the team.

15.01.2022 Good evening. The RAAF Museum continues to remain closed IAW the VIC State Government and Defence requirements until further notice. The RAAF Museum conducts approved flypasts with single aircraft or formations when required. These flypasts are mainly conducted over Melbourne, however they may be as far afield as Ballarat as an example. ... This series of images shows the Sopwith Pup from sitting in the hangar through to parked on the tarmac at Point Cook after an early flypast of the Shrine of Remembrance in the city of Melbourne. It may have been a touch cool!

14.01.2022 Greetings all. The RAAF Museum will continue to remain closed IAW the VIC State Government and Defence requirements. Thankfully the weather has been mild of late and the various works going on around the base have continued unabated. Three of the Museum hangars now have new roofs! Today's images show some of the cockpits from the Museum's airworthy aircraft fleet. You will notice quite a variation in instrumentation from the very basic in the RE8 and Sopwith Pup from World War I through to the Harvard trainer and Mustang from World War II. Keeping all this instrumentation operational is a considerable challenge!

13.01.2022 Greetings all. The RAAF Museum continues to remain closed IAW Government and Defence requirements. On the plus side, the previously mentioned building upgrades to Museum offices, display and storage facilities are continuing. The refresh of the Museum Headquarters building has been finished and the re-roofing of the General Engineering workshop has all but been completed. The re-roofing of the paint facility and the airworthy storage hanger is now underway. In addition to the... above, construction work has also been taking place in the main display hangars. Todays image was taken a number of years ago (20Sep10) at the RAAF Base Williamstown Airshow. It shows a PC-9/A of 4 SQN and the RAAF Museum's CAC CA-18, Mk.21 Mustang A68-170 parked side by side the day after the show. Interestingly, the PC9 has now been withdrawn from RAAF service being replaced by the Pilatus PC-21. No.2 Flying Training School was the last RAAF unit to operate the PC-9/A and wrapped up PC-9/A operations in December 2019.

12.01.2022 Staff at the RAAFM continue to be busy throughout this lockdown period. Whilst we have been closed to the public, we continue to create new exhibits. The image below is of our recently installed RAAF VC case in the Upper Heritage Gallery. As an update to all our followers, the RAAF Museum currently remains closed in accordance with State and Defence requirements due to COVID-19 restrictions. We will update our page as soon as we are able to open in a safe way for all our visitors, volunteers and staff members.

11.01.2022 NAIDOC 2020 - Always Was, Always Will Be. LAC Batzke has been a fulltime serving member of the RAAF since 28 Jan 14 as an aircraft technician. In June 2015, upon completion of ATECH IET’s in Wagga Wagga, he was posted to 77SQN in Williamtown to maintain the F/A 18 Classic hornet. During his posting to 77SQN, he has been on multiple overseas exercises including a 5 month deployment to the Middle East on Op OKRA. He is currently posted to the museum. In May 2019, an opportuni...ty arose to be re-classified to an Elite Athlete in Defence and pursue a full 1 Division scholarship to study a Bachelor of Business major in economics and play College Football at the University of Toledo in the United states of America for four years, starting in June 2021. Being a proud Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander from Moa Island, pursuing this career path is only a small but necessary step for bridging the gap to cultural recognition and reconciliation one brick at a time. For LAC Batzke, this is the beginning of a path he wishes to create for future indigenous and non-indigenous athletes that want to pursue professional sport, whilst receiving a world class education and serving within the ADF. LAC Batzke is pictured next to the Museum's CAC CA-25 Winjeel (Aboriginal word for 'young eagle'). #NAIDOC #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek2020 #RAAF
