25.01.2022 Mulching gorse in this way is a great way to knock it back so it's easy to spray the regrowth and germinating seedlings.
25.01.2022 The classic 'Dad and Dave' demonstration in action! Smoke blown through the warren allows identification of all the entrances so you can effectively fumigate. This Wallington warren had 12 entry holes. Dick and Bob's use a (non toxic) smoke 'nugget', and a small leaf blower to blow the smoke down warrens makes the job much easier than the heavy old petrol powered smoker which is shown in another clip on this facebook page.

24.01.2022 Thanks to the Victorian Gorse Taskforce (VGT)for an interesting and informative workshop on gorse control at Portarlington today. Brydie Murrihy, VGT Project Officer, spoke about gorse biology and best practice gorse control techniques and we watched gorse being mulched by Dean Colegrave of Precision Slashing. Garry Kendell from Bellarine Bayside explained the keys to successful gorse control - the essential ingredient is persistence, with seeds living in the soil for up to 5...0 years! Sandra, from Mannerim CFA spoke about the fire danger caused by the highly flammable oils in gorse. Bellarine Landcare is coordinating an application to the VGT for a grant to to assist landholders with their gorse control. Any Bellarine landholders who have gorse and want advice and/or a grant to control it can contact me - Sophie, Bellarine Landcare Facilitator to discuss 0457 333 727 / [email protected] Great information on best practice control available here https://www.vicgorsetaskforce.com.au See more

This is an amazing accomplishment and testament to everyone involved in delivering the VRAN program, which includes this excellent rabbit bootcamp to up skill people throughout Victoria in best practice rabbit control.
18.01.2022 Some Bellarine landholders have noticed dead rabbits and we believe that the Calecivirus may be having localised impact. If you find any dead rabbits - then follow the directions below to send in a sample to be tested. We are keen to track the virus, and see which virus is causing mortality. Follow the directions to take a sample of leg bone or liver, and store it in double zip lock bags in freezer while you await the vial in the mail .... If you have any questions about the process contact Bellarine Landcare Group facilitator on 0457 333 727. Report disease via RabbitScan https://www.feralscan.org.au/rabbitscan/pagecontent.aspx

17.01.2022 Congratulations, BLG Rabbiters, Dick Simonsen and Bob Beveridge. Bob and Dick have just received commendation at the Victorian Landcare Awards for their invention and promotion of a rabbit warren smoking kit. The kit allows for easy and cost effective identification of all exits to a warren - an important step prior to fumigation. They have demonstrated the equipment at rabbit control field days, and generously given their time and expertise to help support the community in the control of rabbits. Great work, Dick and Bob!

13.01.2022 Hi Everyone, City of Greater Geelong have their Draft Rabbit Control Plan 2020-24 out for feedback https://yoursay.geelongaustralia.com.au/DRCP The draft plan outlines how the City will control rabbits on City managed land and support the broader community to reduce rabbit impacts.... 08.01.2022 Did you know two rabbits can breed up to 184 rabbits in just 18 months! With breeding capacity like that the only way to tackle rabbits is by working with your neighbours on multiple strategies strategically timed for maximum effectiveness. Late summer when the grass is dry and sparse and rabbits numbers are naturally low are the best time to organise a cooperative control program. This time of the year is good for warren fumigation and so a group of neighbours in Wallington got together today to learn about fumigation and tackle some warrens together. Thanks to all who attended. If you’d like to organise a working bee with your neighbours let us know and we can help organise it.

04.01.2022 Ned's Corner: such an inspiration! The regeneration of Nature when the rabbits and sheep are removed is incredible. Well done to Peter and Colleen Barnes and Trust for Nature for all their work to care for this incredible landscape.
03.01.2022 Everyone is welcome to join this presentation by BLG member, David Clark.
03.01.2022 Serrated Tussock is an emerging weed on the Bellarine - if you think you have it growing on your property and need positive identification contact us at Bellarine Landcare Group and we can assist. Please note that it does look similar to some our native grasses such as our native tussock grasses and wallaby grasses. Read on for some identification tips from the Victorian Serrated Tussock Working Party.
01.01.2022 Gorse / Furze is waving it's happy little flowers in the wind as I drive around the Bellarine .... and flowers are followed shortly after by millions of seeds which last for 30 years in the soil! Controlling gorse is an annual activity ... which gets easier over time if you are persistent. :)

01.01.2022 "The rabbit makes the burrow, but the burrow makes the rabbit". Destroy the warren and you will ensure that rabbits can't breed on your property .... 45 people turned out to hear the importance of destroying rabbit warrens as an essential element of rabbit control, along with other important insights into best practice rabbit control. Thanks to Tim Bloomfield for sharing his extensive knowledge, along with Pete Wright, from Allright Ag and Pest for demonstrating implosion me...thod of warren destruction along with warren excavation, and taking the attached drone photos. Thanks, Belgrove Hire, for the generous donation of the 1.2 tonne excavator, as well as the City of Greater Geelong for their greatly valued support. Dick and Bob (aka Dad and Dave) from Bellarine Landcare Rabbit Action Group demonstrated their warren smoking gear .... We learnt that 2 rabbits will breed up to 184 in 18 months; just 2 rabbits per ha can prevent the regeneration of native plants, and that a small proportion of rabbit have the capacity to climb very high rabbit proof fences! Tim Bloomfield commented that in his years of working on the Bellarine in the 1970s and 80s he's never seen rabbit numbers as high as they are now. An indicator of the work which is required, and level of cooperation between neighbours which is another essential ingredient in the rabbit control recipe. Thanks everyone for coming along - we hope you left with more information to help in your rabbit control efforts. See more
