19.01.2022 The Greater Bilby is an invaluable ecosystem engineer and holds important cultural significance to Indigenous Australians, with its own place in dreaming storie...s across multiple language groups. The Greater Bilby is known by many names, for example mankarr (Martu word for Greater Bilby) and ninu (Kiwirrkurra word for Bilby), and is one of 20 mammals supported under the 2015 Threatened Species Strategy. There are many projects that are partnering with or managed by traditional owners to help the Bilby. Environs Kimberley, in partnership with Rangelands NRM, the Western Australian Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, Northern Australia Environmental Resources Hub and the National Landcare Program, have been supporting Aboriginal Rangers in the Kimberley with the conservation of the Greater Bilby (Macrotis lagotis) for many years. Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa Rangers and Martu Elders in the Martu Determination have collaborated with NESP Threatened Species Recovery Hub scientists to co-design a monitoring program for the Greater Bilby based on traditional ecological knowledge and tracking skills. The Tjamu Tjamu Aboriginal Corporation - Kiwirrkurra and Parna Ngururrpa Aboriginal Corporation Rangers are also collaborating on a project to protect the bilby on their Indigenous Protected Areas. Rangers are using a combination of traditional tracking measures, cameras, and aerial surveys to monitor the presence of bilbies and predators, with support from Rangelands NRM, Desert Support Services and the 10 Deserts Project. These collaborations and partnerships are valuable examples of how we can deliver better outcomes for both the Bilby and people. : Top - Bilby outside its burrow - credit - Damian Kelly Bottom left - Martin (DBCA), Abel and Kumahl (Ngurrara rangers) stand behind a sensor camera trap set up on a bilby burrow - credit - Jesse Alai Environs Australia Middle - Kumahl (Ngurrara ranger), Martin (DBCA), Amy and Penny (Ngurrara traditional owners) walk a transect looking for bilby scats - credit - Jesse Alai Environs Australia Bottom right - Kiwwirrkurra and Ngururrpa rangers with a feral cat - credit - Ngururrpa IPA
