"Kate is an equitation scientist (B EqSc), who has recently completed a PhD in horse behaviour and training (University of Sydney). Kate is also an accomplished horse trainer, coach, and competitor in Dressage, Jumping, Western and polo in Australia, Europe, USA and Asia. 26.04.2022 Ooty municipality has finally passed the official resolution to ban the use of ex-racehorses in touristriding. This is a much awaited and much needed decision a...nd thanks to the hard work and dedication of many Nilgiris SPCA volunteers the ban has finally come to force. For years the ex-racehorses that were no longer fit for racing, have been available for very cheap price and therefore encouraged people with no facilities or knowledge to take care of a horse to buy them to then use them in tourist riding business during the busy tourist season in Ooty. Unfortunately this has lead to lot of unnecessary suffering when these horses were left to roam on the roads and among the traffic, looking for food from rubbish bins and ingesting plastic waste at the same time. WVS India equine team has been attending many cases of traffic accident injuries or plastic impaction colic among these ex-racehorses over the years and so we welcome this ban while we continue to run our monthly clinic as well as the emergency veterinary service for the remaining, registered and licensed tourist riding horses (Marwaris, Kathiawaris and ponies) in Ooty.
