20.01.2022 Dr Pieter den Boon has now been part of the RVS Team for 2 years now! A graduate from the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Utrecht in The Netherlands in 2004, with an equine differentiation, during his veterinary studies Pieter was actively involved in riding and racing Standardbred horses for a training establishment in the North of Holland. Upon graduation Pieter started his internship at one of the biggest equine hospitals in the Netherlands to further his skill...s in equine medicine and surgery. Since then, Pieter worked briefly at the University of Berne, Switzerland, in the Equine Internal Medicine Department after which he moved to Ireland In 2007 to pursue his interest in working with thoroughbred race horses. During his 12 years in Ireland Pieter acquired a wealth of experience in radiology, lameness, reproduction, foal-care, performance medicine in the very versatile Irish Thoroughbred industry. Pieter's areas of interest include lameness, internal medicine and radiology. Since joining our practice in January 2019, Pieter has embraced his new life on the Mornington Peninsula. 15.01.2022 FEI RULE CHANGE | From July 2021 horses competing in FEI events will no longer be able to have their whiskers shaved. The decision was passed at the FEI General Assembly held earlier this week. "Horses are not permitted to compete in FEI Events if the Horse’s sensory hairs have been clipped and/or shaven or in any other way removed unless individual sensory hairs have been removed by a veterinarian to prevent pain or discomfort for the Horse. Areas of hair that must be clippe...d, shaven or removed to allow veterinary treatment are exempt from this rule. As of 1 July 2021, Sanction 39 in Annex VI will be applicable". The Veterinary Committee believes that the horse’s sensory hairs must not be trimmed or removed as it reduces the horse’s sensory ability. The change will align with legislation in a number of National Federation's where trimming or removal of sensory hairs is forbidden and in some cases carries a heavy sanction. 02.01.2022 A long overdue industry announcement, made today by Racing NSW addressing a difficult but important element for welfare of thoroughbred racehorses. Hopefully it won’t be too long before we see our state address end of life welfare and establish a similar program.

02.01.2022 INTERNATIONAL APPLE DAY Apples are safe for most horses to eat and they come in a variety of flavors ranging from super sweet to tart. Horses can eat apples as treats as long as they are fed in moderation and properly prepared, ideally cut in quarters.... Make sure you lay the apple in the flat of your hand when offering it to your horse to avoid being bitten!

01.01.2022 ~Jennifer here~ I'm very sad to say that Dr Lukas Orda, Equine Vet, 25 years old has never been found since the ship he was on capsized in seas off Japan during... a typhoon. Lukas has been missing since September. On Monday 28th December, I'm flying to Townsville to attend a Memorial Service for Lukas. I'm asking for help from any horse owners who had the pleasure of having this amazing young Vet attend your property to treat your horses. DID YOU TAKE ANY PHOTOS OF LUKAS? I'm putting together a video of Lukas doing his job, and will give this to his family as a keepsake of memories from his working career. His baby son is only 9 months old and I would love this little boy to have a video of the great work his Father did, to always look back on in years to come. Lukas Orda is a fine young Australian, lost at sea, in a situation that should have never happened.
