20.01.2022 We've just announced the details of Phase 3 of our roadmap for the easing of restrictions, with significant changes coming into effect on Saturday 6 June. As pa...rt of our carefully planned roadmap, Western Australia is now ready to take the next step. This next step will be significant, and it will be challenging. Before I detail the changes, I will say this - WAs success allows us to move ahead and take significant steps, BUT we all must continue to act responsibly, that means good physical distancing where possible and good personal hygiene. Because if we have an uncontrolled outbreak, I dont want to have to place restrictions back on. We cannot afford to undo all our good work. Phase 3 will be introduced from next Saturday, thanks to the success in limiting community transmission in WA during Phase 2, and on the advice of our Chief Health Officer and State Emergency Coordinator. As part of Phase 3, the follow changes will occur: - Non-work indoor and outdoor gatherings of up to 100 people will be allowed, a five-fold increase from the current 20-person limit. - Up to 300 people will be allowed in some settings, including for indoor or outdoor venues with multiple, divided spaces, with up to 100 people in each space. - All food businesses and licensed premises can now operate with seated service only, and alcohol may now be served without a meal at licensed premises. - All beauty therapy and personal care services can reopen, including saunas and wellness centres. - Galleries, museums, theatres, auditoriums, cinemas and concert venues can reopen with the 100/300 rule followed. - Perth Zoo will open, as can wildlife parks, amusement parks, arcades and indoor play centres. - Playgrounds, skate parks and outdoor gym equipment can reopen. - Gyms, health clubs, indoor sports centres will be able to offer the normal range of activities, including use of all gym equipment. However, Gyms will need to be staffed at all times and undertake regular cleaning. - Full contact sport and training will now be permitted in Western Australia. This will mean from next weekend, people of all ages will be able to start competitive contact sports. - Parents and guardians will be able to enter school grounds to drop off or pick up their children as part of Phase 3. - TABs are permitted to reopen. The Chief Health Officer will separately work with Crown Casino on how the gaming floor could reopen in the future. These are all major steps forward for Western Australia. Phase 3 will be a big leap but its one we can make under the watchful eye of our expert health advisors. The four square metre rule was introduced in line with health advice. I know its a rule that is hurting businesses. Ive been out for dinner in Rockingham and seen tables and chairs stacked up, because the four square metre rule is limiting the number of people that can be in some venues. As was always going to be the case in Phase 2, the four square metre rule prevented a large number of businesses from opening. As we now increase the limit on gatherings to 100, I wanted to make sure we closely assess this rule. Our Chief Health Officer has now advised, that due to WAs hard border with the east remaining in place, Western Australia is now in a position to move ahead of the national advice. As part of Phase 3, Western Australia will be the first State in the nation to remove the rule and instead implement a two square metre per person capacity rule for venues. This will replace the four square metre rule, which is the current national position. This is an important and substantial move forward our State, and I hope it means many more businesses will be able to open and employ more Western Australians. I know its still not perfect, but we are now able to move ahead of the rest of the nation. In addition, as part of Phase 3, Rottnest Island will reopen to the WA general public. Rottnest has served us well as our own quarantine island during this crisis. We can only make these changes because of the hard work of everyone across our State. But in particular our hard border controls give us the flexibility to progress further along on roadmap. Once again, WA has led the way, and I hope our performance can continue to lay the path forward for the other States. Now is the time for Western Australians to wander our great State and support local businesses. Just like Phase 2, we will carefully monitor the introduction of Phase 3 and its impact in our community. Together, as part of a rigorous consultation process involving the Chief Health Officer and Police Commissioner, we will closely assess Phase 3. We will then work towards further restrictions being eased as part of Phase 4 in coming weeks. This will predominantly be focused on even larger gatherings, the new two square metre rule and some of the other existing restrictions. A time for Phase 4 introduction will be determined in the future, but it will follow the approach we have taken between earlier phases.

16.01.2022 CORONAVIRUS LOCKDOWN AND HORSE HEALTH The changes introduced by the Government yesterday will affect many horse owners and could increase the risk of health pro...blems for some horses. Here are some things to consider: HARD FEED: If your horse was in work and now isn't or is in reduced work you should cut-back or remove any hard feed. Maintaining the same feed intake with reduced work could increase the risk of colic, tying-up, behavioural problems and lead to rapid weight gain. FORAGE: Many horses may require more forage. Grass is starting to grow (currently highest in the East) so for horses prone to laminitis, colic, obesity, EMS, manage turnout carefully. Avoid making a change from 100% hay to 100% pasture as this leads to a major upset to the hindgut microbiome and an increased risk of colic. SUPPLEMENTS: Other than removing/reducing hard feeds and potentially increasing forage intake, avoid making any major changes to the diet. Exceptions could include vitamin and mineral supplements, probiotics and supplements for specific conditions such as respiratory or joints. For some supplements, you may be able to cut back the amount you feed and save money. SALT & ELECTROLYTES If you are feeding salt and or electrolytes and your horse was in work, then you could cut these back. EXERCISE: If you can't ride then hand walking if you can keep away from other people or lunging (large circles) are good options and if you are lucky enough, horse-walkers or treadmills. But be careful not to overdo it. BOREDOM: If you are on lockdown with horses having to be stabled for most of the day, then try to relieve boredom with mirrors or stable treat toys or hanging toys. I'm personally not a big fan of licking blocks with high sugar content.

07.01.2022 EA High Performance Update Relating to Event Cancellations, Planning and COVID-19 27th April, 2020 As COVID-19 continues to evolve and countries around the wo...rld remain in various stages of lockdown, the health and wellbeing of our riders, horses, support teams and their families remain our priority as we continue to monitor the situation closely. Last week EA High Performance (HP) met virtually with the FEI to discuss critical matters relating to the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games including Minimum Eligibility Requirements (MERs), qualifications, horse ownership timelines and event planning. A decision on these matters is yet to be finalised and the discussion remains ongoing. EA High Performance will continue working closely with the FEI to ensure that any outcome will be fair, in the best interest of the sport and uphold the integrity of the Olympic spirit. The past week has continued to see multiple key events around the globe cancelled due to COVID-19. The only five-star event in the Southern Hemisphere, the Australian International Three-Day Event, held annually in Adelaide has been cancelled along with Luhmühlen Horse Trials, another five-star event held in Germany. CHIO Aachen, which always attracts a strong contingent of Australian riders across multiple disciples, has also announced that the event will not run this year. These events were without doubt highlights in the wider equestrian calendar but were also key Olympic preparation events for many of our riders. We are working closely with our riders to re-evaluate their Tokyo preparation and support their altered training schedule. Domestically the Equestrian Australia Dressage Committee (EADC) notified HP that Dressage NSW has taken the decision to forego hosting the 2020 Australian Dressage Championships on October 15th - 18th at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre (SIEC). The current situation and the uncertainty surrounding when competition may resume domestically makes planning extremely difficult. All of our HP disciplines are currently faced with the same decision-making process regarding events scheduled to run in 2020 and we expect that further events will be impacted, both in Australia and Internationally. We would like to thank the EA National Discipline Committees and the event organising committees for their hard work and diligence in addressing these difficult decisions head-on and for always ensuring horse and rider welfare remains the top priority. The FEI has announced that the FEI Eventing Calendar Task Force met on the 24th April and reached decisions on various issues such as deadlines and date clash rules for the FEI calendar in 2020, Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games MER events in 2020/2021, CCIO events, five-star events 2020, FEI Championships 2020/2021 and associated fees and costs. The FEI Board will review these decisions during a special virtual meeting held today (27th April) and we expect to be able to update the equestrian community on the outcomes this week. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic the FEI previously announced the FEI Sports Forum 2020 would be completely reviewed in form and scope to only feature time sensitive topics, namely FEI Anti-Doping Rules for both human and equine athletes, with these revised regulations being implemented on 1 January 2021. As the FEI Sports Forum can no longer be held in person the FEI have made all documentation available online. Consultation and feedback from the equestrian community remains an important part of the decision making process and the FEI would like to encourage all stakeholders to review the rule changes and provide feedback, directly to the FEI via the website, so the final review process can begin on 13 July. You can find all FEI Anti-Doping rule revisions here: https://inside.fei.org/fei/about-fei/sportsforum/2020 The EA High Performance Panel and the Chairs of the National Selection Panels continue to meet regularly to discuss the impact of the current circumstances on our Tokyo preparation, strategic and operational planning, nomination policies and funding. As there are so many variables still at this stage, we will continue to work hard in adapting these plans and policies and to remain available to our stakeholders during this time. We thank you all for your understanding and continued support and please feel free to contact the High Performance team directly if you have any questions or queries. Vitamin E is an essential antioxidant that may benefit athletes by reducing oxidative stress and influencing cytokine expression. Results found feeding higher levels of natural vitamin E source resulted in higher serum -tocopherol levels as well as some improvement in oxidative and inflammatory response and improved functional outcomes in response to an exercise test. 04.01.2022 THE DREAM THAT MANY WILL NOT UNDERSTAND: My horse is my personal dream. One day when I am very old and when I can not walk anymore, it will be in my heart as a ...trophy of my memories. I met people who taught me something and have the same spirit and I met others that I'm glad I forgot. I got wet, I felt cold, And I felt warm, I was afraid, I fell, And I stood up, I even hurt myself, I have been broken, But also, I laughed out loud inside . I spoke a thousand times with myself. I sang and shouted with joy like a madman, And yes ... sometimes I cried. I have seen wonderful places and lived unforgettable experiences. I often made unplanned jumps that even Oliver Skeete would be proud of; other times I made jumps full of terror. I stopped a thousand times to see a landscape. I spoke with perfect strangers, and I forgot people I see every day. I went out with my demons inside and returned home with a feeling of absolute peace in my heart. I always thought how dangerous it is, knowing that the meaning of courage is to advance even feeling fear. Every time I go up to my horse I think about how wonderful he is. I stopped talking about it to those who do not understand, and I learned to communicate with other riders. I have met some amazing people I now call friends because of my horse. I spent money that I did not have, giving up many things, but all these things are not worth even one special moment with my horse. He is not a means of transport or a piece of iron with wheels, it is the lost part of my soul and my spirit. And when someone says to me: "You have to sell the horse and you have to be a more sensible", ... I do not answer. I just swing my head and smile, A horse..... only the person who loves them understands it. May God bless my friends and all their horses... And the adventure continues. . See more

02.01.2022 EA COVID-19 ***Updated Thursday 02.04.20***: A statement from the EA Board in consultation with the State Branches, in response to the COVID-19 ongoing crisis. ...The health, safety and welfare of our community is our highest priority. Due to rapidly changing Federal and State Government directives, EA is now suspending all EA affiliated competitions until further notice. This does not include activities that are exempt from current State Government restrictions. Equestrian Australia and our affiliated State Branches will continue to communicate regularly and monitor and reassess the situation as COVID-19 evolves in Australia. EA will continue to provide updates and support our valued members. This decision has been agreed by Equestrian Australia in consultation with our State Branches and supports the recent actions to reduce all unnecessary human contact and limit travel and advice provided by the FEI, Australian Olympic Committee and Australian Institute of Sport. In addition, we have taken advice from EAs Medical Consultative Group, many of whom are front-line COVID-19 responders; including national and state health authorities. The Governments directive is very clear at this time stay at home. With restrictions being implemented almost weekly to combat this pandemic EA advises all members and our equestrian community to follow public health and state regulatory procedures. We understand COVID-19 is having a negative impact on equestrian businesses throughout Australia. Be assured, we are currently working on a COVID-19 support and recovery plan to provide advice and leadership for you during these challenging times. We will return to equestrian sports and a priority for EA and our State Branches is to be ready for competition by planning and working together now. 01.01.2022 From Rogue to War Hero Bill The Bastard This Anzac Day, as we do each year, horse people tend to remember our horsemen and horses who went to war. And if you...ve never heard about Bill the Bastard and his brave rider, its a story worth knowing and sharing with the next generation. Theres now a statue in NSW to honour Bill the Bastard, unveiled in 2016, and a race meeting in Victoria to honour the war manoeuvre called the Jericho Cup. The Jericho Cup event will be held for the first time in this centenary year (2018). Details of both below. Bill was one of 136,000 horses who served in World War I and never returned to Australia. Not your typical waler, he was a huge, strong, obstinate and wilful beast, who earned the name Bill the Bastard. The man who finally befriended him, Michael Shanahan, wed probably now call a horse whisperer. The actions of Major Shanahan and Bill the Bastard at the Battle of Romani in World War One in 1916 are the stuff of legend and a part of our history that more people should be aware of. Under heavy fire, Bill and Major Shanahan rode through the battlefield and picked up four Tassie soldiers who had lost their horses. With a man standing in each stirrup and two more on Bill, the horse charged through the enemy to safety, saving all five men. Amazingly, Bill carried 380kg of human cargo over one kilometre through soft sand, away from certain death. Bill was bigger than the usual Waler. Reports say he was a massive horse, who weighed 730 kilograms and stood at 17 hands. He gained his name as a result of his habit of bucking whenever he was saddled. But he was also noted for courage, strength and staying power. He was first put to use as a pack horse because of his obvious strength and the fact no-one wanted to try and ride him. The Rider: Then along came Major Michael Shanahan, from Roma in Queensland. He was said to be the type of leader you would want to serve under when fighting a war. He was courageous, led from the front and always put the safety of his men before his own. A carpenter by trade, he was an excellent horseman. He survived Gallipoli and it was there that he noticed a pack horse with amazing strength and endurance. Shanahan was impressed with Bills physical abilities, intelligence and determined character and decided to befriend the horse. He always carried treats (liquorice allsorts) in his pocket and developed an understanding for the way Bill thought. Back in Egypt, Shanahan gradually managed to coerce the horse into allowing him onto his back. When called into the battle at Romani as part of the 2nd Light Horse regiment, it was Bill that Shanahan was riding. He was still unsure if Bill would revert to his previous behaviour at the battle front, but he took that chance. On the front line, Shanahan rode up and down the lines encouraging and covering his men, dodging bullets and checking for any injured. At one point, when some of his men had been outflanked, he rode through the line of fire and heard a groan. He went to find the injured man and instead found four Tassie soldiers without their horses, unable to escape. After the courageous rescue, and a drink for Bill the Bastard who pawed the ground and wanted to get back to work, the pair returned to the action - Shanahan was unwilling to leave his men without their leader. Shortly after, he was shot through the leg. Despite this, he kept going for another hour, encouraging his men to push on to victory, until he finally passed out. The Horse: Bill the Bastard, as he was affectionately known, did not mind hauling 400kg of heavy equipment uphill or carrying the injured down the hill (one of whom apparently was the famous John Simpson), but he objected vigorously to anyone trying to ride him. Men placed bets on how long anyone could stay on him. The record was a mere two minutes and thirteen seconds by a British jockey who had ridden cup race horses. The average was 15 seconds. He was indeed a handful for even the most experienced and best horse handlers. Bill would buck, kick and bite and caused many broken bones and other injuries as he threw his charges off. He was considered unrideable but useful in other ways because of his strength. It was said he could run for five to six hours where other horses tired in thirty minutes. When Shanahan was shot and passed out, Bill the Bastard became aware that he was not receiving commands from his rider. Realising that he was in trouble, he now gently trotted back to camp, delivering his master to none other than the veterinary hospital. For his gallantry on this day, Shanahan was awarded a Distinguished Service Order but his injuries were so severe that part of his leg had to be amputated. Had there been a Victoria Cross for horses, Bill surely earned it that day. Bills heroism made him the most famous and respected horse amongst the thousands of horses recruited to serve the Light Horse troops. And come to think of it, with typical Aussie irony, calling this horse a 'bastard' would have become a great honour. The Battle: The inscription on the Bill the Bastard statue in Murrumburrah-Harden, NSW, the home of the Light Horse Memorial, reads in part: ". . .At the battle of Romani (an Egyptian town on the Sinai Peninsula where the ANZACs Mounted Division and the British 52nd (Lowland) Division defeated the combined armies of Germany and the Ottoman Empire and thus ensured the safety of the Suez Canal for the remainder of the war) on 4th August 1916, Major M Shanahan DSO, 2nd Australian Light Horse, heard that four men, having lost their horses, were left out in the field at the mercy of the Turks. Riding Bill the Bastard, Major Shanahan returned to the scene under heavy enemy fire, collected the stranded men and Bill galloped back across the thousand yards of sand carrying the additional four Light Horsemen (two on his back and one hanging on to each stirrup). For his services in carrying those men to safety Bill the Bastard was retired with honour the following day and served the remainder of the war as an officers packhorse. The Tributes: The Book - Bill The Bastard by historian Professor Roland Perry (2012 Allen & Unwin) is well worth a read. The Statue - In 2016, the NSW town of Murrumburrah-Harden, the home of Australias First Light Horse regiment, unveiled a life-size sculpture to commemorate this amazing horse. Local craftsman Carl Valerius conceived and produced the sculpture. The Movie - A documentary has been produced which includes a re-enactment of the amazing rescue. http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2014/08/15/4067966.htm The Jericho Cup - The first running of the modern day Jericho Cup will be held on December 2, 2018 at Warrnambool Racecourse, Vic. Why? Approaching the end of the First World War the Australian Light Horse was planning a major offensive against the Turkish Empire. In order to lull the enemy into believing nothing unusual was afoot, a race meeting was organised on the eve of the assault. The main race was called The Jericho Cup over three miles (nearly five kms) through the desert sands. The winner was Bill the Bastard, whom we now know was probably Australias Greatest War Horse. It is proposed to run the Jericho Cup annually from now on (this being the 100th anniversary year) to honour Bill the Bastard, the Australian Light Horsemen and their magnificent mounts The Walers 1914 to 1918. http://www.thejerichocup.com.au/ More: A video clip about Bill The Bastard by National Geographic is excellent. http://www.nationalgeographic.com.au//bill-the-bastard.aspx We loved this song by Eric Bogle, his tribute to the Light Horse As If He Knows. Update: according to Major Michael Shanahan's grandson Terry Shanahan on this page, "Bill and his mate - Penny - were returned to Gallipoli to help with the War Graves. He was given to a Turkish farmer and is buried just outside the main grave site." Update 2: Thanks to Brett Thompson of Qld, we now have a photo of Bill's grave at Gallipolli. That is terrific thanks Brett. We can see you were there in person - what a thrill. The stone says Bill lived until 1924.
