25.01.2022 JEN’S TODDLER FRIENDLY KALE CHIPS This is a simple kale chip recipe that my toddlers go bonkers for. 25.01.2022 What is antenatal expression of colostrum? Colostrum is a golden yellow breast fluid that is produced before breast milk comes in (about a few days or up to a week after birth). It is very nutritious and contains high levels of antibodies from the mother which can help fight infections and bacteria. When a baby gets this colostrum in the early days of life, it gives their immune system a kick start from antibodies produced by the mother’s established immunity. It also line...s the gut to help protect it from foreign invaders like viruses and bacteria. This makes sense as we are only now really starting to understand the link between gut health and the immune system. I had never heard of collecting colostrum prior to giving birth until I did the @shebirths course via zoom (as covid had just hit). Curiously I tried to hand express some after one of our follow up group chats and was surprised to see a couple of drops of this golden liquid emerge. For the final week or so of my pregnancy I collected about 1ml daily in little syringes and placed them in the freezer. I wasn’t sure I was going to use it but after hearing how helpful it can be to have it on hand if your milk takes longer to come in, I thought why not?! I also discovered it’s immune supporting qualities for bub and thought why not have it on hand if baby gets sick I can give it a little colostrum (colostrum lasts in the freezer for several months). Baby Leo was born ravenous and ended up having an additional (to the breast) 2ml of colostrum the night he was born! If you’re pregnant and thinking of giving this a go; make sure you check in with your midwife, doula or obstetrician. Generally you don’t want to express until the final weeks of your pregnancy as nipple stimulation can bring on uterine contractions (and therefore labour). -Rach #breastfeeding #colostrum #breastfeedingawareness #breastfeedingmama See more

14.01.2022 A little shout out to a new local Bondi business with your skin, health and the environment in mind. @su_tuttle co-founder of @thenimbusco has teamed up with @alexandra.grima to co-found @foile_ a skincare store with lots of low-tox, refillable options. Definitely worth checking out if you’re in the neighbourhood. You know we love to promote low-tox options for your personal care products to reduce the toxic load on your body particularly for those trying to conceive, breastfeeding, with chronic health issues or interested in preserving your health and wellness.

11.01.2022 Been stuck inside at your desk all day? By just simply putting your legs up the wall at the end of the day can take pressure off your back and joints, encourage lymphatic drainage and help you unwind. Try it in your lounge room when you're ready to switch off for the day or for 10min before bed if you have trouble going to sleep. @yogaoutlet

10.01.2022 This brain looking nut is actually good for the BRAIN. In TCM, walnuts are warm in nature and sweet in flavour. They contain omega-3 oils which can help with inflammation. They also moisten the lungs and intestines (good for constipation) and help relieve coughing and wheezing with accompanying signs of cold ie. chills and copious clear mucous. They are great for the Kidney-adrenals (think low back and knee pain) and excellent to improve the quality of sperm. Also awes...ome to eat regularly throughout pregnancy for the development of bubs brain. Enjoy them in winter sprinkled over hot porridge to add some textural crunch, in roasted veggie salads and in your favourite crumble recipe. Along with black sesame, walnuts can delay or slow the progression of greying hair according to Chinese dietary theory. See more

10.01.2022 RACH'S BOOBIE COOKIES Ingredients: 1 cup wholemeal spelt flour ... tsp of bicarb soda/ baking powder butter (organic/grass fed and salted is my preference) cup brown sugar 1 tbsp blackstrap molasses (optional adds extra minerals) 2 heaped tsp of ground flaxseed meal (freshly ground preferred) soaked to 4 tbsp of water (enough to soak into a thick paste) 1 egg 1 tablespoon vanilla extract (optional) 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional) 2 tablespoons brewers yeast *the key ingredient tsp of natural ground salt (if butter not salted) 1 cups oats (organic, steel cut if possible) 1/2 cup of your favourite biscuit ingredients ie. choc chips, chopped dates or dried cranberries. Method: In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar, then add the egg and vanilla. Mix well. In a separate small bowl, combine the flaxseed and water, let them sit for a few minutes before adding to mix. Add the dry ingredients (apart from the oats and your additional ingredients) and mix well again. Stir in the oats and your additional ingredients. Using a dessert spoon, scoop the mixture into your hand and roll it into a ball. Place the biscuits onto a baking paper lined baking tray. Flatten them a little with your fingers or a spatula. If you like a boobie appearance add extra ingredients to resemble a nipple Bake the lactation cookies for around 12-15 minutes on 170C, depending on how well cooked or crunchy you like your biscuits. Makes about 15-20 cookies. See more

08.01.2022 KIDNEY 1 - YONG QUAN Some of you might be familiar with this acupuncture point which is often included in birthing courses. It is the first point on the Kidney meridian. Acupressure can be applied to this point (either strong pressure from the thumb or a knuckle) which is located in the centre of the sole of the foot where the pink meets the white skin. It might feel a little more tender there.... This point has a calming and grounding quality and is great if someone is panicky and stuck in fight or flight mode. It helps bring excess energy down from the head in order to anchor the energy. It is also important, now that the weather has started to cool down, to keep this point warm. So avoiding walking on cold tiles and keeping the soles of your feet warm and covered is essential to protect your kidney energy. If cold enters the meridian it could contribute to back pain and achy legs. Warm foot soaks can be an excellent way to help anchor your energy at the end of a day on the laptop. https://learnacupuncturepoints.com/kidney-1-acupuncture-po/ See more

07.01.2022 Have you ever tried Chinese herbal medicine? We mostly prescribe either ground raw herbal formulas like this in the picture or granulated powders you either steep or dissolve in boiling water. Much simpler than boiling up raw herbs in a pot on the stove (like I did in my teens and burnt a few of mums pots while I was at it). We also only use TGA approved herbs which means they are quality tested and do not use any endangered species. Most herbs are plant based thou...gh, and we can accommodate vegan patients. - Rach @empiricalhealth See more

07.01.2022 CUPPING Cupping is often used in conjunction with acupuncture. Glass cups are placed on the skin to create a vacuum to draw the 'pathogenic Qi' out of the body. Cupping can either be stationary (cups are left on for 5 minutes) or gliding cupping, where the skin is lubricated and the cup is glided over the skin creating a massage-like pulling sensation. Traditionally cups were made from bamboo, but these days they usually come in glass, plastic and silicone. ... Cupping can leave markings on the skin for up to a week or two. Sometimes they hardly mark at all. Usually the darker the markings the more stagnation there needs to be resolved. * cosmetic silicone cups may be used to massage the face. Cosmetic cupping, when performed correctly, does not leave markings on the face. See more

07.01.2022 Eating carbs at night can be good for your hormones! (low GI or gluten free carbohydrates like rice). Having a small portion of sweet potato, pumpkin, other starchy vegetables or rice with your protein and veggies can help: - stabilise blood sugar levels overnight - reduce stress hormones like cortisol and raise the happy hormone serotonin to help promote a more restful night sleep... - balance energy levels and help refuel for the next day - balance your mood (no one likes to go to bed 'hangry') - prevent the after dinner sweet cravings So even if you're doing a low carb weight loss plan, it's worth keeping a small portion of good quality carbs for your evening meal. *This is particularly important for women and our fluctuating hormonal cycles* See more

06.01.2022 Berries in general contain phytochemicals and antioxidants for renewal of liver cells. From a TCM perspective, blueberries nourish Kidney Yin. Yin represents all the cool, watery, passive, heavy, downward and inward energies in our body. Benefitting Kidney Yin, blueberries are ideal to include in your diet recovering from illness and women suffering from lots of heat symptoms such as night sweats, excessive thirst and hot flushes. At this time of year you can buy organic blueberries in frozen section of the supermarket and add them to stewed apple or pears or a hearty winter crumble. This is better than a cold smoothie in the cooler months of the year. *Always buy organic berries as these fruits are typically sprayed more readily. Google the dirty dozen for tips on which fruit and veg are best to buy organic/pesticide free.

03.01.2022 It’s a BOY! Rachael’s little over baked babe finally arrived earth side a week ago. Baby Leo arrived nice and juicy at over 4kg and 56.5cm long (42wks). Mama and Bub are doing great thanks to all of Papa’s cooking and care. Leo is already a champion feeder and refuses to be swaddled with his hands down; he is half Italian after all!
