28.03.2022 Thanks to Spelfabet.

10.03.2022 Tim Shanahan joins with David Kilpatrick and Linnea Ehri to clarify the role of advanced phonemic awareness in learning to read. http://www.shanahanonliteracy.com//rip-to-advanced-phonemi

18.02.2022 What better way to cap off DLD Awareness Day than with some FREE, high quality PD? A great one for teachers, considering that in an average class of 30 students, approximately 2 have Developmental Language Disorder. Take a look..

15.02.2022 Thanks to Read3 for posting.

24.01.2022 Let's hope this is the beginning of a change in the way the science of teaching reading is addressed in Australian education undergraduate programs. Fingers crossed.

23.01.2022 16 March: Current advice suggests there is no need to shut down the clinic as yet, so for the time being, RWSP will be ‘business as usual’. As always, I am mindful of the health and wellbeing of my clients and their families, and would like to take the opportunity to reassure RWSP clients that high hygiene standards will continue to be maintained, though a few changes to the clinic and therapy routine will be necessary: Communal activities (puzzles, pom poms, beading sets a...nd toys) will not be available in the waiting area. Please bring a book from home or a similar quiet activity to keep siblings engaged during your child’s session. Rachel’s ‘library’ is temporarily closed as well. Please assist your child to wash their hands as per health department guidelines immediately on arrival. Antibacterial soap and paper towels are available. Hand sanitiser gel and sprays are available (and encouraged) during the session. Please help yourself as needed. Any communal equipment used pencils, scissors, glue, cards etc will be wiped or sprayed with antibacterial solution at the end of each session. Please bring your child’s own pencil case if you would prefer. Clients engaging in school-based sessions will follow guidelines set by their school, however I will ensure additional hygiene practices will be followed in line with the RWSP clinic wherever possible. I have hand sanitiser and antibacterial wipes and sprays available to all my school-based clients. If you have recently returned from overseas or have been in contact with someone that is suspected or diagnosed with Co-VID19, I ask that you follow government health guidelines. Please remain up to date on this via: https://www.health.gov.au/ Please be reassured that should you be unable to attend your face-to-face session; I am able to offer online telehealth sessions via the Zoom videoconferencing platform. If you have any questions or concerns, please email rachel@rachelwastellspeech or call 0403 245 018

12.01.2022 A beautiful little verse. Thank you Skip OÇonnor for sharing.

11.01.2022 Wishing all my young friends a great and exciting first day, especially our little ones staring school for the first time. You got this, kiddo!

10.01.2022 Phonological and phonemic awareness are vital foundation skills in learning to be literate. This via Five From Five:

10.01.2022 There has been such upheaval in all of our lives recently which can be difficult to explain to our young ones. This free downloadable book, with some familiar illustrations may be useful in helping our younger friends understand a little about the coronavirus. I've had to field a few questions today about why we are staying safe at home and most importantly "will the Easter Bunny get coronavirus?"

08.01.2022 There are many ways to access quality learning opportunities. The ABC has developed a very nice schedule for lower primary, primary and secondary students learning at home across maths, science, English, civics, languages, art, geography HPE and history.

06.01.2022 Swift recognition of words is essential for reading fluency. Look at this series of charts which explain the concept of orthographic mapping. Learning lists of ‘Sight Words’ isn’t very useful at all. Here’s why:

06.01.2022 Thanks Promise Speech Pathology for posting

03.01.2022 In light of the COVID-19 situation, this afternoon I made the difficult decision to temporarily close the Gaven clinic starting Friday 20th March. I feel that I should take a proactive approach and do what I feel is best for my clients, their families as well as my own family and the wider community. RWSP is still open for business, however, rather than attending a physical clinic, RWSP will operate as a virtual clinic, with sessions running via the Zoom online communication ...platform. This ensures children do not miss out on their therapy and can continue to work toward their goals. I hope you will join me as we explore this different service delivery model. I wish you and your family well as we support each other through this challenging time.

02.01.2022 Oh good! We love David Walliams at RWSP. I’ve just had a quick listen to ‘Spoiled Brad’. What a great initiative. A free listen each day.

02.01.2022 Don’t forget to look back every now and then to see how far you’ve come.

01.01.2022 A big thank you to SA SPELD for continuing to support individuals with different learning abilities. This page does a great job in assisting families working with their children in the home learning setting.

01.01.2022 This little sketch note does a great job of summarising why trying to learn ‘blends’ is an unnecessary step in the learn-to-read process. Thanks to Tiny Steps Make Big Strides.

30.12.2021 Thank you for sharing this, Kathryn. The very generous crew at Little Learners Love Literacy have made the app version of all their decodable readers FREE in the apple App Store.

14.12.2021 Vale Eric Carle.

08.12.2021 Some great keynote speakers here!

30.11.2021 This has made my day! Look at all those lovely pre-reading skills.

17.11.2021 Thanks Catherine Scott for sharing an incredible resource for those interested in the science of reading. Included are a variety of ways to access information to share with others: journal articles, links to blogs, podcasts, and infographics among many. Take a few moments to look through and share.
