23.01.2022 An interesting discussion coming up at The Fremantle Network on Tuesday night. Join us at The Local Hotel from 6.30pm
23.01.2022 This will be a very interesting discussion. Featuring Freo residents Michelle MacKenzie from Shelter WA and Piers Verstegen, who are both on the State Governments COVID recovery taskforce. Plus Cr Frank Mofflin, who chaired the council's economic recovery working group, and representatives from local business as we discuss the economic outlook and interventions for Freo
23.01.2022 I have received a number of emails from residents who do not want the Council to maintain the current amount of rates collected, by imposing a 10% increase to the rate in the dollar charged. People are (quite reasonably) asking that the decrease in rates caused by the reduction in property values be applied so people effectively pay less rates at this time. As a ratepayer myself, who has had a significant loss of income, I completely understand this rational request. Howeve...r, that means that the Council will need to significantly cut normal services in order to make up for the 10% loss of income (in addition to the revenue lost through the COVID shutdown). So I am asking you, the ratepayer, what would you like us to cut to achieve this decrease in rates? I am struggling to find things I can justify cutting. So I genuinely welcome your suggestions. Please take a look through the budget in the link below and tell me what you are willing to cut. The CAT bus? Activities at the Library? The sunday free concerts at the Arts Centre? Roadworks? Programs at the Meeting Place or Samson Rec Centre? Or should we pay what we normally do so the Council can provide everything it normally does and we struggle through this tough time together?
22.01.2022 A different perspective of Freo, and sneak preview of the Walyalup Civic Centre!!
22.01.2022 Got a great community or arts initiative? Applications for funding are now open :-)
22.01.2022 There was a great turn out last night at the @Fremantle Arts Precinct meeting last night where we heard from no less than *four* representatives from Main Roads about the replacement of the old traffic bridge (its a shame a couple of them couldnt have gone to the meeting at the Town Hall!) They encouraged locals to provide feedback on the plan so far and sign up for updates, which you can do at www.mainroads.wa.gov.au//metropolitan/Swan-River-Crossings/ The debate is far ...from over, so make sure you let your voice be heard! The slide in the photo below highlights some of the feedback theyve heard so far. (With Adin Lang )
21.01.2022 It's about time (well overdue actually) for the WA Government to disclose what they are planning for our new bridge...
21.01.2022 This week, the Fremantle Council will consider signing this open letter to the McGowan Government asking for a stimulus and recovery package that also considers climate change. The Clean State campaign is calling for the health, economy, and climate crisis to be addressed as equally urgent priorities. What do you think? ... Will you sign it too? See more
21.01.2022 I would not have stood for council if it wasn't for the effective and collaborative council with a strong sustainability agenda that came to power in 2009. I have been proud, challenged, excited and humbled to be part of the Fremantle Council for the past 9 years as we undertake a once in a generation renewal of our amazing and precious city. Linda Blagg was there for much of the journey, following along with her camera - and this is the documentary she produced to tell our story. You can come watch it, reflect and discuss the journey with us on 5 November.
21.01.2022 Growing up, I always knew the centre of Freo as "St John's Square". It only become widely known as King's Square again in the last decade. However, during that time the City of Perth named its new area above the train line Kings Square, potentially creating confusion! So, is it time that Freo's civic heart got a new name? ... Perhaps we revert back to St Johns Square? Or maybe we adopt a new Noongar name that recognises and celebrates the Traditional Owners and longest surviving culture on the planet? Or maybe you have another idea for its name? Have your say by 1 November at https://mysay.fremantle.wa.gov.au/ks-name
21.01.2022 Last night, the Fremantle Council adopted a bold local law to ban cats in key parks and areas where wildlife live. This article explains why it was unanimously supported.
20.01.2022 This looks like great school holiday fun!!
20.01.2022 Tonight, after only a *little* debate, the Fremantle Council voted to support the "Statement of Principles" by the C40 Mayors, pledging our commitment to prioritise science, equality and a sustainable and resilient approach to post Covid 19 recovery. Let's come out of this crisis, better than we were before!
18.01.2022 @Councillor Hannah Fitzhardinge has brilliantly articulated my thoughts and concerns about the announcement that Fremantle Port will be relocated to Kwinana. "If were not going to be a port city what will we be? What does the future hold for Fremantles economy? Fremantle people want to have a say in issues that impact their future. A genuine dialogue about planning, land use, and future industries is essential."... What do you think?
18.01.2022 The West End is one of the most significant and intact historical heritage precincts in Western Australia and was State Heritage-listed in 2017. We are proposing changes to our planning framework to ensure that the West End Heritage Area retains its heritage significance and character while allowing new land uses and re-use of these buildings as an important part of Fremantle's city centre. Take a look at the proposed changes and share your feedback by 7 September. ... You can also drop-in to our Talk to a Planner session at the Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery (main gallery) any time between 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm on Wednesday 26 August 2020 to ask questions and tell us your thoughts.
18.01.2022 Freo's most rocking festival returns!!!
18.01.2022 I had a lovely chat with Michael from Fremantle Shipping News yesterday about my nine years (!) on council and how it came to that. We talked about growing up in Freo and some big changes that may be coming. Listen in and leave a comment if you like :-)
18.01.2022 We must do all we can to use this recovery and stimulus time to transition to better ways of living. If you are not yet convinced that climate change is real and happening here and now, just take a walk through Booyembarra Park or Port Beach today! The cost of cleaning up from extreme weather events is increasing for the City of Fremantle, which is just one of the reasons we are advocating for action on climate change and investment in clean energy.
17.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS! We did it! The State Government has finally agreed to contribute funds to much needed repairs of the Roundhouse and Arthurs Head cliffs. I look forward to the unsightly temporary fencing and scaffolding being removed from this historic landmark
17.01.2022 A sneak peek inside the old Courthouse!!
17.01.2022 And in other news today... the fabulous new hotel, restaurant and beer garden at the historic Warders Cottages is now open!! A fantastic new hospitality venue worth checking out. The restoration of the 1850s cottages are extraordinary!!
16.01.2022 The Council has committed $500,000 towards repairing the Roundhouse cliffs so that the fencing and scaffolding can finally come down. We just need the WA Government to commit their fair share for the conservation of this significant state asset
16.01.2022 Im so pleased the Fremantle Markets are back, Ive really missed this place!!
15.01.2022 What stories of Freo can you share? I have a few... ;-)
14.01.2022 What do you think?

13.01.2022 Fremantle Council is urging the state government to ensure the local community is properly consulted on the design of the replacement Fremantle Traffic Bridge. The new bridge provided a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver an iconic infrastructure project in Fremantle. Fremantle Council is calling for Main Roads to commence community engagement on the new bridge as soon as possible, and that this engagement process include a full and transparent evaluation of at least ...two different design options and bridge alignments. The council also adopted a number of design principles in relation to the project including: - The bridge should demonstrate excellence in design and create a memorable gateway experience. - The public realm resulting from the project is safe, attractive, connected and inviting. - The character of the North Fremantle townsite is protected from additional traffic impacts and extended towards the river. - The project should deliver uninterrupted connectivity of the PSP cycle path to Fremantle and North Fremantle rail stations. - A significant portion of the existing heritage-listed Fremantle Traffic Bridge is preserved, especially at the southern end, and able to be used and activated. - The significance of the location to Traditional Owners is clearly understood, respected and interpreted in the design.
13.01.2022 It is so great to have 1700 Department of Communities staff in their new home in Freo. Welcome, I hope you love it as much as we do!!
12.01.2022 Parking in freo isn’t hard if you have the know how
12.01.2022 The pools open!!!
10.01.2022 There was quite a disruption last night - totally freaking my poor dog out... Sadly the Army and Police failed to notify the council or community, but hopefully they'll do better next time (and I can take my poor dog far away!).
07.01.2022 Did you hear the massive lightning crack at 6.37am on Sunday? This is a photo of the moment it struck the CBD and knocked out the citys CCTV and WiFi network temporarily!!
06.01.2022 I love living in an apartment! My place is filled with light, has excellent amenity and is set back in a quiet residential neighbourhood in a street filled with trees and birds. There are not nearly enough apartments built in this way - with residents comfort and enjoyment in mind... "In reality, the majority of apartments arent built for families or new immigrants to Australia. They arent even built for people. They are built for investors"
05.01.2022 The plans for the new bridge have been revealed and community input is being sought by main roads. The Council would prefer to see more thought and community input go into the project, but sadly Main Roads is in charge and not keen on the idea. I encourage you to check out the plans and provide your feedback at https://www.mysaytransport.wa.gov.au/swan-river-crossings by 20 September.
02.01.2022 Who needs to go away, when there's just so much to do in Freo! :-) I could add at least 20 more!
02.01.2022 For more than 120 years the inner harbour has been central to Fremantles identity as a port city, and the employment and activity associated with the operations of the inner harbour are a critical component of the Fremantle regions economy, Mayor Pettitt said. While we recognise the need for an expanded role for the outer harbour at Kwinana, the council has been very firm in its view that the inner harbour should be retained as a working port. We will need to take some ...time to sit down and properly review todays announcement and consider where to from here, but obviously any move to end container handling at North Quay will have massive implications for Fremantle. Im looking forward to hearing from the state government what they have in mind to compensate Fremantle for the loss of such an important asset and how they plan to support the Fremantle economy during the transition to the outer harbour.
