25.01.2022 Crowding is certainly an issue within the detention system, and urgent action is needed to reduce the threat of a COVID-19 outbreak. Reopening the Christmas Is...land detention facility, however, is not the solution. Safer, more humane and more fiscally responsible alternatives exist, writes Dr Michelle Peterie. https://overland.org.au//the-true-cost-of-reopening-the-c/ #SafeSettlementNow

22.01.2022 How can the NSW justify sending hundreds of cops to break up a small peaceful protest with students and teachers from the University of Sydney? Protest is an es...sential part of our democracy. If the Libs can relax restrictions on stadiums this week, they can certainly give us a COVID Safe plan for peaceful protest, rallies and community actions. See more

21.01.2022 Well done Gary Lineker!! . Thank you for using your privilege to change the narrative around refugees and asylum seekers at a time the UK government are trying to dehumanise them with increasing hostility.

20.01.2022 With tears in my eyes as I write this, and after an emotionally filled day, we can finally share with all our beautiful friends and loved ones, that Ahmed is fi...nally FREE!!! First stop is of course Macca's....but he could only take in the aroma because he's too excited to stomach food. Words cannot express how we're feeling right now, in a case which many thought was impossible to win. We actually won a Habeas Corpus case! Something no one has won in Australia since the 1800's. A marvellous win for our legal team, but more importantly, a new precedent has been set for cases to follow from here. We believed that the government were holding Ahmed unlawfully, and after many failed attempts to rectify the matter, we were left with no choice other than to bring forward a case against the Commonwealth of Australia for his unlawful detention. Today the fight paid off. The judge ordered the Commonwealth to release him immediately and he was dropped off at a hotel in Perth where he'll stay til his flight back to Melbourne on Monday. To our solicitor Alison Battisson, you are a fierce warrior, and one hell of a human rights lawyer. We will never be able to thank you enough. To our barristers Nick Wood and Jim Hartley, you guys are such a gift to the legal field. There are no words in the English language that could justify the pure talent you are. Forever grateful. I'm not usually one to be stuck for words, but there's just so many emotions to process and we just can't believe we did it. We really won this landmark case! Omg!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! We love you and appreciate all the prayers and support . See more

13.01.2022 "They want to silence me. I am human like you." Farhad Bandesh This is Farhad's story :: I TALK TO THE MOON :: Scomo and Dutton want to take the mobile phones o...f all refugees in detention. This is shameful but we still have time to act to get the bill voted down. Tell Senator Jacqui Lambie to vote ‘no’ https://www.senatorlambie.com.au/advise_jacqui See more

13.01.2022 This is the story of the Kabul Peace House - Mark Isaac's book - in the words of Insaan and the community members he wrote about. Actors replaced the voices of those involved in the story in order to protect their identities. It's 50 minutes long and a truly impressive story. Well worth a listen!

07.01.2022 NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2020 Mohammad being transported to hospital for treatment Open Letter in Support of Paramedics and Other Health Workers With the continuation of COVID-19 and the prolonged detention of those transferred to Australia under Medevac being held in Kangaroo Point Detention Centre and the Mantra Hotel, our concern for the health and wellbeing of these people has continued to grow. ... Last week we released an open letter in support of paramedics, and other medical staff, to speak out against the arbitrary restraint of refugees or asylum seekers being transported to or from detention to health facilities. It would appear that there is often limited rationale behind the use of restraints that would certainly be questioned if used on other members of the public in such an arbitrary and unsupported manner. We support health workers involved in pre-hospital care to question the use of restraints by Serco staff if there are no specific, documented reasons for their use and we offer support for those that may feel overwhelmed in standing up for their patients’ comfort, dignity and care. This comes after it was made public in late October that Farhad, a refugee being held in Brisbane Immigration Transit Accommodation (BITA), was removed without warning or consent from a gym in the facility. At the time Farhad was removed he had his personal phone, his only means of communication, confiscated by Serco officials. He was transported to Villawood detention centre without any formal explanation. You can read more about Farhad's story here. There are many groups in the community engaging in ongoing advocacy and support for those trapped in detention. You can read about the medical students’ campaign outside Kangaroo Point here
