06.04.2022 Let’s ensure that this New Year’s Eve we make it a more comfortable experience for our dogs! DESENSITISATION- If your RAD pup has never been exposed to fireworks before there are heaps of great YouTube videos with fireworks sounds that you can use for desensitisation. This may help your pup become familiar with the sound and help them settle when they hear the real thing on New Year's Eve. SECURE YOUR HOME - It is best for your dogs to be in your home with you. If this... is not an option, please make sure your yard is secure. Check the fences and make sure your gates are locked. Please ensure that your dog is wearing a collar with your current phone number on it and contact details, or the details of someone close to you, incase your dog does get out. SAFE PLACE - For your dog, a quiet and comfortable space where they can retreat is always a great option. If they use a crate you could set it up in a dark and quiet corner of the house (with or without a blanket covering it) with a bed, or snuggled up with you. You can even play some gentle music or put the tv on low if it helps your dog to relax! TREATS - long lasting chew and some of their favourite toys and comfort items to make them feel safe during fireworks. This helps make the experience of the fireworks a positive one so that your dog will have a positive association with the noise! For yourself, some of your favourite crafts and activities, a weighted blanket, comfort items, noise cancelling headphones and some good music are a perfect option to help block out the sounds and focus your mind on something else. If your Assistance Dog is already good with fireworks and celebrations, some DPT can also definitely help to keep you calm and comfortable! Remember that if you are attending parties and family lunches, it is absolutely more then okay for you to need time out and take a break!

24.01.2022 While looks, breed and wardrobe may vary, assistance dogs all share an important role in helping their humans! Whats your favourite piece of assistance dog gear?

19.01.2022 Im just here to get juice." Assistance Dog handlers are often approached when out an about with questions and comments regarding their amazing dogs. This can make it tricky to get through a simple outing! While we understand that our dogs have very interesting jobs and adorable faces, some handlers dont like to be approached, some dont feel comfortable answering questions, and some are just there to get juice. ... So, to help answer some of the most commonly asked AD questions, and to celebrate International Assistance Dog week we will be answering a few common AD questions each day! Leave your questions below and keep your eyes peeled for our posts!
19.01.2022 To the ends of the Earth, youll always be by my side Assistance dogs like Memphis need to be able to work in all terrain, whether it be a bustling shopping centre or a serene mountain top !
19.01.2022 Little dogs, big jobs! What some of our RAD Dogs lack in stature, they make up for in intelligence and heart! These hard working hounds work tirelessly to help their human access the world; yet sadly they can face a lot of stigma, and are often not taken seriously as working dogs. Just because these dogs are small, does not mean their roles are any less important or life saving. Their jobs should not be diminished, and small ADs should not be discriminated agains...t. Some of our tiny teams would like to share their experiences with you. I think the biggest challenge would be people doubting his ability to actually assist me. Because he looks like a living teddy bear says Eddies handler. He is a Miniature Poodle PTSD Assistance Dog, who knows to interrupt nightmares, alert to his humans heart rate and provide medication reminders! Argo, the Dachshund Assistance Dogs handler says I dont know how I would get through life without him, however the public dont seem to take him seriously, sometimes they dont even see him so they step on him or stop and laugh." Bella, a Cavalier Assistance Dog is a little life-saver, as she knows to alert her human before fits and seizures, so her handler can get to somewhere safe without injuring herself. Smaller breed Assistance Dogs come with a huge amount of benefits, that cannot go un-noted! They can be discrete, easy to transport, can be cheaper to care for, and often perfectly suitable for those living in apartments or units. Id always prefer a small dog, as my financial situation isnt good and theyre cheaper to care for. Its also easier to fit into transport, so thats less of a worry as well says one RAD member. My dogs size has been of benefit in my apartment dwelling lifestyle says Eddies owner, "weve also never encountered a space he cant tuck into, even in the tiniest urban cafes." Now that we have introduced you to our tiny heros, help us spread the word about the respect these little dogs really do deserve. Big or small, our RAD Dogs do it all!
18.01.2022 This is Porter! And you bet he has a very im--ant job to do Not only is Porter an Assistance Dog, hes also earned his Trick Dog Champion, Canine Conditioning Fitness and Champion All Star titles among many others! Hes also an aspiring Agility and Rally-O competitor His human says Being able to focus on our sports and tricks and stuff really helps with my health and disabilities too. Do you and your Assistance Dog do any extra curricular activities?
17.01.2022 What big scary sea creature behind me? Buddha only has eyes for his human, even when sharks, stingrays and all kinds of fish are whizzing past him!
17.01.2022 Even in a bustling shopping centre, Lily only has eyes for her human Check out that amazing rear end awareness! Because a dogs rear end tends to follow along whilst the front end leads the way, often they are not aware they even have control over their back legs! Teaching rear end awareness reminds dogs that they have back legs, and teaches how to move them separately from their front legs This can be a very useful exercise for assistance dogs (as you can see here with Lily!) as it can aid with heeling, walking backwards and tasks such as blocking and covering
17.01.2022 The slight nudge you see Indie do in this video is a high heart rate alert! One of her main tasks! Many tasks that assistance dogs provide can be very subtle, and can be as simple as a nudge or a lick! Even though an assistance dog may appear as though they are not working, they are always on the look out for their human! On the reverse, some assistance dog tasks can be quite noticeable, such as a dog jumping up at their handler, to interrupt a behaviour or alert to a change in condition. To a outsider, this may seem like the dog is misbehaving, when in reality, they are doing exactly what theyve been trained to do!
16.01.2022 Dont forget to keep those precious paws protected this summer ! To avoid burning your pups paws this summer, boots, (like the ones Holly is wearing!), are your best bet, even though it may take your pup a few sessions to get used to them ! You can also avoid burns by performing the seven second test, by placing the back of your hand on the asphalt for seven seconds; if its too hot to stand, its too hot for your pups paws ! Remember, the temperature of the ground can get much hotter than the surrounding air ! On a 31 c day, the asphalt can reach 62 c !

13.01.2022 Have you seen our new levels? We have created these cool colour levels to help our RAD Teams grow With a mix of levels in experience and understanding of Assistance Dog training, we have decided to implement some more structured training levels into RAD! This will help our teams understand where they best fit in, and exactly what training needs to come next. .... RAD teams are able to move through these levels independently, with the support of professional trainers, or a mix of both along the way. . Our training levels are designed to ensure our teams have a solid foundation of obedience, socialisation and distraction, and task training; as well as high standards of behaviour and a strong bond before moving forward into Public Access work. . This will also ensure that all teams representing RAD out in the community are living up to our core values and beliefs. Helping us put our best paw forward Our current teams will have already received an email about these changes, new members will find out more through their application process. . 10.01.2022 Humans all around the world are having to teach themselves how to sit and stay, so here are some ways to keep your dogs brain and body busy while self isolating! Nosework Games - Snuffle mats or something as simple as a scrunched up towel or blanket with kibble or treats hidden inside can keep your dogs brain busy as they sniff around in search of their dinner! Muffin trays with food sprinkled in and toys covering the food, getting your dog to guess which cup the tr...eats are under and a cardboard box filled with scrap paper hiding food can also give your dog a great mental workout! You can even scatter your dogs dinner on the lawn, and let them sniff out and gobble down their meal. Mix and match any of these for some variety, or even create your own games! Brush up on those Tricks and Tasks - Old dogs can definitely learn new tricks! Teaching your dog something new is not only excellent mental stimulation but is also a great bonding activity! Plus, it means you have a cool new trick to show off You could also use this time to help solidify your assistance dogs tasks, so they can help out even more at home and can return to full time work better than ever Long Lasting Treats and Food Dispensing Toys - Chewing and chomping is a great boredom buster for dogs, it can help relieve stress, aid their dental health and is just plain fun! 01.01.2022 R U OK? This year has been... ruff, to say the least; it's been harder to feel connected to those important to us, and many have experienced feelings of isolation and stress from such rapid changes in our everyday lives. Many of the disabilities mitigated by assistance dogs are invisible and as such it’s often not obvious that someone isn’t doing so well; physically, mentally or emotionally. ... Many RAD Dogs play a vital role in managing their handler’s mental health, allowing them to access the world, even on days when things aren’t all that ‘okay’. Assistance dogs can help ground their handler through deep pressure therapy, bringing them out of panic attacks quicker, or even alert to the onset of an attack to prevent one all together! They can stand behind their handler in a ‘block’ to increase feelings of security and aid in providing space to the handler. If it all gets too much, some assistance dogs can even guide their human out of the situation and to a safe space Of course, every dog and the tasks they perform are different, just as every individual and their disability are. Today is a great oppurtunity to reach out to others and ask if they're okay. To get a few things off your chest, no matter how big or small. To have an check in with yourself about how you are feeling, and if you need some support. It is perfectly okay to not be okay Where to find help if you’re not feeling okay: LifeLine: 13 11 14 BeyondBlue: 1300 22 4636 HeadSpace: www.headspace.org.au R U OK: www.ruok.org.au
