25.01.2022 Friday the 25th October! I am going to be playing music after the burlesque, drag bingo and other festivities at the Glam & Grunge extravaganza fundraiser for StreetWork . its at club willoughby from 6:30, though ill be making the noise from about 9:30 til 11. according to this - there are still tickets available, so come along and help out an amazing charity, and see me lean in to a theme that is completely up my alley. https://events.humanitix.com.au/streetwork-glam-and-grunge-
24.01.2022 How long was my train stuck between Redfern and central just then? Long enough to listen to the entire new Hearts and Rockets album in full Its very good And whilst this delay is annoying, its formidable, so kudos it it too
22.01.2022 Pop this in your diary! Really great djs like DJ Cost and Skae, a bill put together by a really great independent hip hop mag, and an hour or two of me looking insanely toy by comparison, playing my favourite hip hop things. Its going to be so much fun. Im already going through my 12s! Real real hip hop (and me :) ). So excited.
21.01.2022 Really great to be back here at @dunbarhousewatsonsbay for the wedding of Sarah and Shazeer #bestdaleofmylife Such a great venue. @ Dunbar House
20.01.2022 Serato DJ now has tidal integration, and as such I have been playing around with that... Anyway, I wanted to see how good their jazz selection is, and lo and behold, they had every track that I played on Friday night over dinner at the wedding :) I might see if I can port this over to spotify too, but I need to tend to a sick wife first. And if any of you want to try out Tidal in Australia, I have a link to a 90 day trial I can send you.
20.01.2022 So much happiness this weekend. Just getting ready to go off to Watsons Bay for a wonderful wedding, and then up to the hunter tomorrow to be in a bridal party where Jem will be the DJ... I should be tweaking the playlist for tonight, but I just rescued my old soundcloud account (never sign up to things with work email addresses friends), and was clicking around an noticed a link to this set... Buick and Paypercutts - Too Terrorble Tablists from 2008. A better hip hop mix you rarely will hear... so if you are looking for some afternoon jams to kick off your weekend, give this a spin! https://soundcloud.com/deejay-buick/buick-paypercutts
20.01.2022 Todays complete happiness is a new song from my favourite band! Produced in collaboration with St Vincent, its different, fun, and gosh it makes me excited for the next album! Happy happy Friday friends!
20.01.2022 New Tkay Maidza is a stone cold banger! Check it out yall
20.01.2022 Ive been away. Away from home for two weeks. Away from DJing for a few months. But with my first bookings coming up in September, and with my head so full of everything going on in the world, its been lovely to take time out to listen to music. And 2017 (like 2015 before it) has had some cracking releases so far. Some amazing shows. If i want to melt the roof with some psyche, all i need do is put on the new Black Angels or the new King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. If I w...ant to dance, im finding the Andy Weatherall remix of Confidence Man kicks off a million directions to flail in. From Run The Jewels to Kendrick to Your Old Droog ive been hip hopping more than ever. But the real love for my ears this year has been getting back to funk. And soul. And electronic mutations of both of those things. So its glorious that Caiti of sietta fame has put out a new single that fits better. Pop this on. Its shiny. Haunting. Cool as. And now I really cant wait for her album. See more
19.01.2022 Im heading up today to Lithgow in the Blue Mountains to play music for a wonderful couple getting married. I feel a little bit guilty for convincing them that they should have me DJ instead of the iPod playlist that they were intending on having but Im sure Ill do a pretty good job at being a little bit better than that. Moving into a new place the beginning of the year has meant that Ive been able to have the decks setup in the living room again, and that has made me ab...solutely fall in love with playing records all over again. One of my favorites record stores that Ive ever visited was turntable lab in New York City and they have started doing a series of DJ sets in store. For your weekend happiness explosion if you arent at a wedding, I highly recommend checking out this set by Dj Rhettmatic as its super fun super funky and let me tell you the dude has skills. Hope you have a fantastic weekend See more
18.01.2022 I listened to the 30 songs on my spotify release radar today, and they left the best til last! Check out this fabulous remix of Julia Johnsons collarbone (leaving the punctuation like that because its funny). Have a great weekend everyone! Also the new tracks by the new pornographers, ty segal, the du-rites, squid and omg the darkness that dj krush has going on in his new one is so good. Oh and if you need an epic banger, the nghtmre or something remix of Dillon Francis and allison wonderland is humongous.
17.01.2022 Who wore it better? Just checking out the rad new single by Sampa The Great, "Final Form", and the sample was familiar. Ah! Its sampled from Space Invadas - Late Night (feat. Guilty Simpson) Both very nice, and I cant decide...... check them out Space Invadas -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiSqJ8nh9po Sampa The Great -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2lvgKDpiSA
16.01.2022 #lithgowdisco was incredible. A tremendous venue, wonderful service from @mylittlepeonyau and a dancefloor that would not quit til the very end.
14.01.2022 Hello everyone. Just trying out a new way to record mixes. Lets give this a go -- a vinyl set of house and house adjacent music, recorded live to phone on the new Dolby Go app.
14.01.2022 Last night i had the pleasure of playing 90 minutes worth of tunes to the students of the university of Sydney project management program, as well as those involved with Valhalla Redux before they screened The Imitation Game, the Alan Turing movie. All afternoon I freaked out about not being hip and with it enough to play to students anymore - my grasp on modern pop is slipping away as i really only have time these days to focus on my weird underground likes or stuff I alre...ady know. Or so i thought. I found some great new pop (the latest tracks by m and also portugal. The man, are both 10/10 singles) but also remembered i can intersperse film scores, samples and homages into a set before a movie, right? Everyone was on board, and it was super special to be pumping the soundtrack over the Cadigal green, the music filling every cranny in the Darlington campus. Im glowing today, and jazzed because I now know i need to keep working on keeping my music up to date, and its not as daunting as i felt it would be at panic stations yesterday lunch time. To celebrate, here is the new flying lotus video. The song itself is pretty and lovely and happy. A complete juxtaposition of the visuals.
13.01.2022 Did I DJ at your wedding? I got contacted a few months ago by the folks at Easy Weddings saying that I had a few 5 star reviews by them which is odd, because I am not listed on their site, and never had even heard of them really. But I went and checked it, and clicked around, and its a pretty darn good one stop shop for contacting wedding suppliers of all types... SO I decided it would be a good idea to be listed on there, and its been pretty great. They run a tight ship, an...d are really helping me with my digital marketing, which is something Ive really never known how to do, and also kind of shyed away from... But I am convinced that honest reviews add credibility to a listing - and as such I would love it if you could let people know about me there to share your experience of my business with future brides and grooms. To ensure reviews are legitimate, Easy Weddings will require you to review five or more suppliers, however, the process is extremely quick and easy. If you provide 10 reviews, youll automatically be entered into a monthly competition to win an iPad Mini! Please visit www.easyweddings.com.au/reviews/suppliers/ to leave a review for me and help other couples get me at their wedding without hesitation!
13.01.2022 So, I know I should be working on my hottest 100 shortlist... But I am easily distracted. And the news over the last fortnight that the amazing Jean Grae is engaged to be wed to her partner Quelle Chris is super happy and amazing and I thought it only fitting to listen to her new stuff, but also check out Quelle Chriss work. Good words, often mellow vibes, and some lovely tracks. But one that caught my eye was his collaborative work on Knxwledges track Ladibird, which had a... crazily familiar sample. Which turns out to be Brian Bennetts Ladybird ( check out this gorgeous slice of sunshine after the rain here (the sampled bit kicks in about the 2 min mark) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hjrswz_jCO4 ). But no, the thing that this really reminded me of, was Boards Of Canadas amazing slice of radness "Roygbiv" ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yT0gRc2c2wQ ) though its not credited anywhere with the sample... So friends tell me - am I wrong? Is the BOC just similar, or is it a sample? For those with spotify I will put a brief playlist of the three in the comments in case you cant youtube easily. Anyway, yay for love, and yay for lovely sounds! See more
12.01.2022 Last week, I was cooking dinner, and it was one of those typical Al dinners - recipe says it will take 2 hours but it takes me at least 4 and that was without the shopping time... On top of that, I legitimately used every single pot and pan we owned... the kitchen looked like a bomb site, my hands were covered in all types of sauces, and all the while, I was letting spotify choose the music for me and this record came on. Gorgeous, jazzy electronica/hip hop. A really divers...e, and excellently written album, that reminds me of all the classic late 90s/early 00s chilled beats records that I fell in love with, but it doesnt sound dated at all. I wholeheartedly recommend you give it a whirl if you are in the mood this week for some lovely sounds. This is a record that Kaelin says was written and worked on in a time of intense personal grief for himself, but what comes through for me is playfulness, life, celebration and happiness. And in these trying times, I think thats an attitude that will carry us all forward.
12.01.2022 Party Style Hip Hop Instant Classic! FRESH DJ SHADOW HAPPINESS
11.01.2022 I was just looking aimlessly at bandcamp, and someone in the uk must have purchased ukiyo musics full digital discography, as their releases FLOODED my screen. Absolutely gorgeous, consistent , wonderfully designed labels, all unique, yet in step. Turns out its an italian minimal tech record label, with some seriously nice releases. If you have time, go get lost in a label that is putting out some wonderful looking stuff.
11.01.2022 Todays happiness comes from getting home after a long day, going through some records, and finding this 12, where the outstandingly charismatic British MC Blaze joins The Herbaliser for one of the most fun party hip hop tracks I ever discovered. The beat is big, the hook oh so addictive, and blaze does blaze things all over it. For those who need some affirmation or confidence - take on this funky advice. Theres no time like now to start building.
10.01.2022 Get some Gentleforce mixtape action to help soundtrack your pre-apocalypse
09.01.2022 20 Albums that I really liked in 2019, no real order, though id probably say my top 5 would be Lux Prima, Eve, Kiwanuka, Pillar and Morse Code... but it was a great solid year for music. Also special mention must go to Lingua Ignotas Caligula which is clearly the best thing ive ever heard, but to call it enjoyable is a bit of a stretch. The Gooch Palms - III Rapsody - Eve The New Pornographers - In The Morse Code Of The Breaklights... DJ Shadow - Our Pathetic Age Hearts And Rockets - Power Tyler The Creator - Igor King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Infest The Rats Nest Karen O & Dangermouse - Lux Prima Sarah Mary Chadwick - The Queen Who Stole The Sky Czarface - Czarface Meets Ghostface Michael Kiwanuka - Kiwanuka Charli XCX - Charli Ta-Ku - 25 Nights For Nujabes Rainbow Chan - Pillar Caroline Polachek - Pang clipping. - There Existed An Addiction To Blood Sampa The Great - The Return The Chemical Brothers - No Geography The Mystery Lights - Too Much Tension Kaelin Ellis - It All Ends See more
08.01.2022 A wedding that Ive only just recovered from. Got a lot of them coming up this year, but 2020 kicked off with a great one. So much love to Sarah, Simon and everyone who cut loose
07.01.2022 https://youtu.be/iSsbH1OM8TQ Every now and again you see a band live and there is just this amazing, electric buzz in the room. The band on stage is captivating, the music they are making is fresh and delicious, and as an audience member you get a brief telepathic connection with your cohort - a smile that links across the room, via everyones face. Ive been lucky enough to have that a couple of times - probably the first was at a Diana Ah Naid gig in Canberra when I was 18, ...and the opening act was a band called george, who were just absolutely magical and captivating. Just one EP for sale at the merch table, but everyone in the room knew they would blow up. A decade or so ago, I was at the Oxford Art Factory, and this band called Tame Impala was playing one of their first headline shows, and the buzz of THIS IS ACTUALLY SUPER SPECIAL was so thick in the air I can still remember the electricity passing through it. They also have made it pretty big. So it didnt really surprise me, but it filled me with glee, when at the Union Hotel in Newtown a few months ago, the same, special, electric moment happened when Mezko headlined the room. Cool, captivating, assured, amazing. This is fire. And they have just released their debut EP on Intertia. Go give it a listen, and get in on the ground. See more
06.01.2022 It doesnt get better than this. You should like peekz for his amazing everything, but commitment to Friday tunes especially
05.01.2022 If you dont have Astral Skulls incredibly badass record from 2 years ago, go get it now. Free download and the cd and vinyl are on mega discount for halloween
05.01.2022 Not to go out on too much of a limb here but I imagine we will hear this song 100s of times this year. Im ok with that for now.
04.01.2022 https://open.spotify.com//glassandahalf/playlist/5La2hpfdQ Last night was incredible! Cheers to All My Friends for having me, and for those that missed out, here is a playlist of almost all of the songs I played, except for the ones that arent on spotify. ROCK.
04.01.2022 With it being super confirmed today, a prepared note for your employer, should you need one. Im not actually the biggest fan of this band, but I know many many of you are. This is great.
04.01.2022 This Friday night, I will be djing at @allmyfriendsindie at Waywards, above the bank hotel on King St in Newtown. Ill be opening the proceedings, from 2300-0030. Come along and have a boogie. No need for guest list, its freeeeee.
03.01.2022 Happy news today! I progressed to the next round of interviews for a job I am going for, and hopefully that pans out nicely. But also, Ive been kicking around ideas for some dj mixes lately, and this was the tip I was on today -- lovely, dreamy, pop music, inspired a bit by the release last week of Rainbow Chans fabulous new album, Pillars, which everyone should totally go and check out if you havent already... anyway you can hear the title track on this playlist, as well as a bunch of other songs I love that skirt from the schmaltzy to the seriously dreamy, and works really nicely on your headphones or in the background on your sound-log... Check the comments below for the link to the playlist :)
01.01.2022 Happiness comes from many places, today its from the magnificent doyen of all things bassy and rad, Herzeloyde. Whilst I have been head down pumping out cover letters for jobs, I have been so grateful to have this playlist matching the insanity that is pumping out pitches to companies in the hope you can join their team on a week-daily basis. Man if we still did Ug Beats, I think we would get this dude to be our resident at large. If you are unfamiliar, go check out his page, his bandcamp, his music. Its really jolly enjoyable. But if you need a one click introduction, this playlist is tremendous.
01.01.2022 This week as I have been driving around town, Ive really been enjoying pretty, soft sounds in my ears. It started on Monday - I got in the car and the news had something about the US President doing something or other, and I clicked the FM button, expecting to get a dose of JJJ or 2ser, but it seems I had left it on Fine FM, and hearing classical all the way to my job was actually really nice. In persuit of keeping the chill dream alive, I fired up the old streaming service..., and sitting pretty in the new releases section was the new one by Jonti, who had a lovely album about half a decade ago on Stones Throw Records, whimsical, ethereal but beat driven joy. Tokorats is gorgeous. The first time I played it through, it reminded me loads of the Avalanches newer album, but it sounds less and less like that with each subsequent listen, and more just a fantastic play around with ideas, friends and sounds to fill the space up with a playful joy. If your thursday needs a lift... give it a whirl. See more
01.01.2022 Todays happiness is a) learning that tonights episode wasnt actually the season finale of the handmaids tale because that would have been a weird way to end this chapter, b) knowing that I get to sleep in tomorrow, and c) clicking around new music videos on YouTube and finding this! Combining gorgeous harmonies, great pop sensibilities, and crunchy electronic beats straight out of the warehouses of Berlin, this absolutely blew me away. 10 out of 10!
