20.01.2022 Radiation therapy for breast cancer has been used as a treatment technique for many years, evolving dramatically over the last 10 years with treatment now offering greater precision, shorter treatment times and a more convenient and comfortable experience for patients. In this article, Icon Radiation Oncologist Professor John Boyages AM discusses the latest in radiation therapy treatment for breast cancer.

14.01.2022 Icon Rockingham patient Amy Boyd was just 38-years-old when she was told the news that would change her life forever - she had triple-positive invasive breast cancer. After finishing chemotherapy, she underwent a bilateral mastectomy and chose to receive five weeks of radiation therapy treatment locally at Icon Cancer Centre Rockingham with the support of a McGrath Foundation Breast Cancer Nurse. Amy credits connecting with fellow breast cancer patients in similar situations with helping her through treatment, which is one of the reasons she started sharing her journey on her blog Kick It In The Tits Click below to read Amy's story:

10.01.2022 Did you know radiation therapy can be a highly effective and non-invasive treatment for skin cancers? It is particularly effective for older patients, for those who would prefer to avoid surgery, or if the cancer is in a location where surgery isn’t medically or cosmetically recommended. Icon are proud to offer Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), an advanced form of radiation therapy that can be used to treat certain types of skin cancers. It offers highly-targeted doses of radiation to complex lesions or tumours on the body without damaging the surrounding healthy areas with minimal side effects for better quality of life. 08.01.2022 For 54-year-old Ipswich local Belinda Mace, receiving not just one but two cancer diagnoses in early 2020 came as a shock. Belinda, who was born deaf, went on to have a full hysterectomy and breast lumpectomy in the space of two weeks and was then referred to the nearby Icon Cancer Centre Springfield for 20 sessions of radiation therapy treatment, which she completed in September of this year. Throughout Belinda’s treatment, the team at Icon Springfield were committed to ensu...ring she could still access the latest in radiation therapy as a deaf patient, including the Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH) technique. Instead of using verbal communication through the intercom, the team developed a screen and light system as visual signals when to breathe in and out. For many deaf people, accessing healthcare services can be particularly challenging. Belinda attributes difficulties in communication for her delay in diagnosis, and was thankful to have her sister Karen with her at every appointment and treatment session to support her alongside interpreter services and her Icon care team. Icon radiation oncologist and breast cancer specialist Prof John Boyages AM and McGrath Foundation urge you to book a GP appointment or screening service today. 08.01.2022 54-year-old Canberra local Yuhua Shi was first diagnosed with Stage III invasive breast cancer in 2015 after noticing a lump in her left breast. Yuhua was able to rapidly access cutting-edge radiation therapy treatment using HyperArc technology at Icon Cancer Centre Canberra and became the first person in the ACT to be treated using this advanced technology, with just three treatments delivered over one week. 07.01.2022 Icon Cairns patient Rob Johnstone got the greatest surprise when he walked into the radiation treatment room to see the rest of his 'tropical Friday' squad waiting for him. The Icon team heard that Rob was planning on wearing tropical Friday to his treatment to brighten up the day of fellow patients, so they all wore matching tropical outfits to surprise him. The little toy Rob is holding is a monkey named Hugs. He was a gift chosen by his niece who lives in NSW and has been unable to visit Rob during treatment. After treatment, Hugs is going to be Rob's travel mascot.
